Random person: "Oh, how old is your child?"
Mom on the cover of TIME: "72 months" |

Meh, I could see him being nearly four. Friends of mine had a kid who grew faster than that, everyone thought he was six or seven when he was four.

Nice. I'm sorry, but...won't that fuck with the kid later on? I'm pretty sure that he's going to be called a Momma's boy for a damn long time by a bunch of other fuckwad kids for this. GJ, Mom. You set your kid up for, at best weird looks and awkward social situations.

Putting aside the merits and the weirdness, the logistics of breast feeding for 3 years are ridiculous. Does this mom work full time? If she does, how can she possibly find the time to breast pump at work every day for years (because you need to do that if you want to keep breast feeding but your kid isn't around). Also, my wife stopped breast feeding as soon as our son started biting, which was around 5 months. She pumped for a few months after that then gave up because devoting 1.5 hours to pumping per day while working full time was torturous for her. Continuing to breast feed for the months upon months it takes to teach your kid not to bite you must be hell.
I feel like parents who suggest stuff like this (or who get into amazing shape instantly) either don't work or are celebrities with a support staff behind them cooking meals, cleaning, and working them back into shape to make parenting an infant or toddler a LOT easier. It's best not to take parenting advice from the media since it's just not realistic. |

This practice is more normal in certain cultures and time periods, mostly in places were food is scarce. Health-wise it's good for the kid. It looks weirder than it is.
In most cases however it's a moot point. A baby will go off the nipple on it's own more often than not. As soon as you introduce a baby to any kind of alternate food they tends to want that instead. My wife was non-challant about how long our two babies would breast feed. Our daughter jumped off at eighteen months if memory serves. Our son tasted food and two days later wouldn't accept the breast, he was not even a year. |

American sexuality is oddly inconsistent in many areas. It has one of the latest AoCs in the world, but an almost hysterical phobia of female pubic hair.

My son is two (27 months actually) and still nurses from time to time, but it's really more of a comfort thing for him right now. I guess 3 isn't a big deal. When we first had our son, I thought anything over like 18 months was too long, but eh, it's not like it's his only source of nutrition or something.

GAF should watch Extraordinary Breastfeeding. Channel4 documentary from a few years ago.

I do not avoid women, GAF, but I do deny them my essence.

That's an obvious limitation of the research. There's nothing traditionally or biologically wrong with breast feeding 3 year olds and I sincerely doubt any negative psychological affects would occur unless others instigate it. There's nothing intrinsically harmful with breast feeding 3 year olds. And this kind of parenting is a very hot topic right now, and I would actually argue that the impact of attachment parenting on the next generation is potentially pretty damn important. We'll have to see, I suppose. Bowlby did his research a while back, and it looks like people going from that have found some nice positives about the approach for fostering a better and more healthy relationship between parent and child. |

When I was a kid and playing with my cousins, one wanted to get something to drink. I went to the sink for water and he went to his mom's boob. Looking back on it makes me chuckle. I think I was about 6 or 7 at the time so that would've made him 3 or 4. Breast milk has all sorts of goodies and kids grow rather rapidly at that age, so I won't judge. I don't know if I could do it that long, personally.

My wife breast fed our first two until about 2 years old. Our third will likely do the same. Its great for them, saves money, and feels so much more natural than formula. Also our kids don't have that awful formula smell so many babies have. After about 2 years, kids become more interested in eating other food to the point that they kind of ween themselves (more or less). Its usually the night feeding that keeps them attached.

this.
If he's really only 3, still breastfeeding definitely isn't the issue. Mom using him as an extra appendage for some 'magazine cover fame' is. Did she even think about what this cover, that millions of people are going to see (especially due to the controversy it's already stirring), will do to this boy? Clearly that wasn't even a concern for Jamie Lynn Grumet. Growing up, are his peers really going to be like "Dude! Love that picture of you sucking on your hot mom's tit!"? I can't imagine that's how the dialogue will go. He'll likely be harassed and bullied because of this, because kids can be cruel little shitheads. I feel bad for this kid. I can't imagine this is an image that will just be forgotten in a year or so. For his sake, I hope it is. I also hope the money was good for Ms. Grumet. She should put it towards potential psych counseling for this kid down the road. |

Breastfeeding was considered acceptable until age seven in some Scandanavian cultures. If anything, this is just a backlash against the stern Victorian attitudes that saw children as small adults who should be treated as such.

Would having images like that of an obviously 4+ year old breast feeding on your computer not constitute child pornography? Not familiar at all with the laws, but it seems like those pics are right up the sickos alley. The part of me that's a father of a young child that finished breast feeding when she was 1 thinks its incredibly odd that a 5 year old is still feeding, but then there's apparently a lot of women that are for this. My wife thinks its disgusting. What to believe.
