Congressman uses fake Bible quote to argue in favor of poor children starving #1

Was posted in Poligaf, but deserves more mocking:

Quote:
On Wednesday, MSNBC's Martin Basir invited Rep. Joe Barton to discuss an upcoming vote in the House that would slash funding for, among other things, Meals on Wheels, and school lunches for poor children. Barton, some of you may recall, was the dipshit congressman that apologized on the House floor to British Petroleum for our ocean getting in the way of their oil.

Barton said a few interesting things, but one thing that REALLY caught my attention was when he tried to defend his callous cuts by pointing to the Bible.

Bashir: I know you're a long time member of the Methodist Church. Is that correct?

Barton: Yes, sir. That's a true statement.

Bashir: How do you square your approach with the Psalm 146, where the Psalmist writes this: "He gives food to the hungry. The lord protects foreigners. He defends orphans and widows." Isn't this the exact opposite of the cuts being proposed by Republicans in congress?

Barton: No, the lord helps those who helps themselves...

Bashir: Which verse of scripture is that, sir?

Barton: Well, it's uh..

Bashir: I don't think you'll find that in the Old or New Testament.

Barton: Well, that was taught to me by my father who is president of the United Methodist school board in Waco Texas, and Bryant, Texas.

He's not claiming it's a bible verse. I don't agree with him in the slightest, but the thread title is a lie.

Contextually it seems as if he was trying to pass it off as idiomatic biblical knowledge though.

I never understood what that meant. If you've helped yourself, how would you ever know if the "lord" did anything?

It's to help distract you away from the contradiction of an all powerful and benevolent god allowing suffering in order to build character... or something.

I can't tell you how many times I've heard religious people use that phrase. I myself used to think it was in the bible since I heard it in church so much. I didn't find out that it wasn't until I was in college (in a theology class of all places).

This general attitude, along with the Prosperity Gospel, has absolutely twisted Christ's teachings. Barton is a known idiot, and a scumbag.

So when someone cites a Bible verse, a supposed Jesus loving guy would disagree with said Bible verse by citing a NON-Bible verse?

Yeah, I've never understood the right-wing Jesus. It is like they read a different Bible than I read. I learned about a guy who talked about helping the poor & sick, a guy who said to love your enemies, and a Jesus that said nothing about homosexuals nor abortion. And they seemed to read about a guy completely opposite of that. Weird.

This seems applicable in this situation:

13 “ Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. 14 For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.

Its used as an way to explain why God doesn't do the will of all your prayers, even if your the best Christian ever. God will help you get money if you work, etc.

And as a go to excuse to call yourself a Christian but be an asshole.

The fanatic does not care that much about the rules or books he claims to swear by. Things can be reinterpreted or forgotten about entirely if it's convenient to do so.

Example: See every fanatical individual or organisation in history, regardless of whether or not they are religious.

And this guy is far worse because he's passing this off as something that is taught when it isn't there in any form.

He may not be quoting the Bible, but then all he does is blaspheming. The Bible is supposed to be the only and ultimate source of wisdom about God and His plans; there's nothing besides that. Barton not only stated, as a fact, something about God that is nowhere to be found in the Holy Book; he stated that God is doing something that's completely in opposition to what's described in the Bible.

Quote:
2. That said, Barton has used the threat of global warming to combat something he hates even more: wind energy. In a 2009 hearing, Barton implied that wind is a "finite resource" and that harnessing it would "slow the winds down" which would "cause the temperature to go up." (See how climate change is hitting the oceans.)

3. Where does oil come from? Barton asks Nobel Prize-winning physicist Steven Chu that probing question during an April 2009 Energy Committee hearing in an exchange about the precious resource in Alaska. Chu's answer about plate tectonics, dumbed down so a five-year-old could understand it, is completely lost on a smirking Barton, who later gloats on Twitter, "I seemed to have baffled the Energy Sec with basic question — Where does oil come from." Actually, those watching were the most baffled.
Amazing.

I'll quote myself from another thread -

Don't get me wrong, I strongly think that such cuts are at odds with Christian values, but Psalms 146 isn't the chapter to slam him on this.
You see, Psalms 146 speaks about god, it's not a commandment for the people, it's about how god is helping the poor and the needy.

In fact, it contrast god's help with this - (same chapter, a couple of verse before; once again, translation is shit)-
Quote:
Do not put your trust in princes,
in human beings, who cannot save.
When their spirit departs, they return to the ground;
on that very day their plans come to nothing.
So if you want, you can totally make the case that it speaks against government intervention (I think it speaks of neither, but if anything, this is an easier case to make).

Now it's true, it doesn't make Barton any less of an idiot (quite the opposite actually), but Bashir doesn't come out so great there either.

I don't find the phrase bad enough to warrant its own thread. This gem however...

Most people don't read the Bible. They just get it from one misinformed preacher, who passes it onto the next person, and so on. Most of these preachers rarely ever bring up the NT or Jesus, really, in their teachings.
