Capcom and Konami made the top soundtracks of the late 80's and early 90's. What the fuck happened.

Martin Galway - Parallax Commodore 64 Title Tune

Martin Galway was such an original composer back in the C64 days, because he wasn't just creating bouncy tunes, he was using the C64 as to play with sounds and moods like synth greats Jean Michel Jarre and Vangelis.

Oh wow, this thread might as well be asking what the best pizza topping is.

...still, I won't deny that the first thought to pop into my head was "Mega Man 2"

I'd say Super Mario Bros 3. One of the best works of Kondo on the console, for me at least.

Yeah Martin Galway was always pushing the SID envelope, that Parallax theme is simply amazing, gives me chills near the end. His stuff never ceases to astound me.

You are right, but the soundtrack of the Turbo / PC engine version is Redbook, streamed from the CD.
I stand corrected, as I did not know Ys 3 had a Fami version.

So since I never played Megaman 2 I gave the soundtrack a try. Is good, but best? I think the Castlevania, Zelda and Mario series are already better.

For me is all about Bit. Trip or Pictobits though. do they count?

For me it's a tie between Mega Man 2 and Metroid with close runner up SMB 3 (steel drum sound effects in the background? Amazing.)

You should listen to the playlist I posted, the original PC-8801 8-bit soundtrack, and much better than the redbook crap.

Megaman 2 or Ducktales.

Probably go with Megaman 2, because it was a better overall track, while Ducktales is known for just one song.

This is something I posted in the Donkey Kong vs SMB thread, but I really think that David Wise did an amazing job with Donkey Kong Land on the original Game Boy:

Kremlantis
Ancient Beaver Bop
Chimpanzee Clouds
Big Ape City

And speaking of handhelds, the Sonic games on the Game Gear had good soundtracks too:

Bridge Zone - Sonic 1 GG

Labyrinth Zone - Sonic 1 GG

Jungle Zone - Sonic 1 GG

Scrap Brain Zone - Sonic 1 GG

Possibly Gimmick!

I bloody adore Young Town (and Pollyanna, linked above) from Mother though.

EDIT: And Kraid's Lair is my favourite 8-bit track, bar none. So mentions to Metroid are required.

Came in here to post essentially this. Game was a bitch back then for me (as were pretty much most shooters) though, never managed to beat it until I got a Game Genie. :(

The Commodore 64's chip was revolutionary when it was released. The problem with these
threads is that all the songs are just judged by nostalgia or popularity.

I feel like it's pointless to post anything from the C64 since most haven't even heard of it on this forum.
