1up.com: Past, Present, Future of 1up - big changes beginning May 21

Wow. It's super depressing that 1up is staffed with just 4 people now and it does seem 1up is gonna go through some big changes or w/e in a week or so. But w/e. As long as T Frog is still around, and Retronauts still exist in some form, I'll still periodically visit that site. Writing is still good. And long live the classic 1up theme that I still hum randomly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TfK1tUrGJ4 |

1UP was the awesome during that era (2005-2008).
Amazing how reliant it was on its personalities for success, how it slowly died as they drained away ...... this was even before they got sold / broken up / scrapped. A golden time that will not be repeated. 1UP Yours and GFW Radio (The Brodeo) are still the best podcasts about gaming their was. tear :( |

1up always struck me as a site with the best podcasts in the videogames press. It's a shame they could never find a way to take advantage of that. It seems like they just missed the boat on the podcast thing as a bunch of people started successfully monetizing podcasts in the last couple of years.
1up Yours - Was never a big fan since I don't play or follow console games but this seemed to have a pretty big following on the internet. GFW Radio - IMO, out of everything produced in the last 10 years by IGN, Gamespy, 1up, Gamespot and a wide variety of now defunct websites, this was the best. Easily one of my favourite podcasts ever. I kind of liken it to the BS Report (sports podcast) of video games. It wasn't necessarily always on topic but what they talked about was usually interesting and/or funny to listen to anyways. Retronauts - Kind of like a Retro GFW Radio for me. The times when they veered off topic to talk about the 90's or 80's still made the podcast compelling enough to listen to. I actually just skip any episodes where they stay on topic about a video game for too long since I missed out on the console thing from 1995 onwards. |

He's not our sharpest knife. In fact, he's one of our dullest.

So more written stuff about stuff. As long as the written still makes references to random 80's pop culture and old games, I'm good. It is a damn shame that a lot of game press folks these days don't know shit about random old games =/ |

would totally do this old lady if his wife were guaranteed not to find out.

Damn. These guys, Cassamassina, Area 5, it's like everything that got me into games journalism is evaporating, and all for the same reason it seems like. Is it really that tough to monetize great editorial content online? I mean, if that's what it took I would've paid subscription for the 1up Show or an online magazine comprised of 1up's feature articles.

I have to say that gaming for me hasn't been the same since 1up got gutted in early 09. It was just exciting to be a gamer and have their enthusiasm for games rub off on you from the content they produced (editorial, video, especially podcasts). I don't know who was in charge of scouting/hiring but that person deserves a ton of credit. Gaming podcasts definitely aren't what they used to be. Go back and listen to those old Retronauts episodes. It's still pretty good now with Bob Mackey but those old Jeremy/Sharkey/Shane/Kohler/Barnholt podcasts are on another level and I learned a lot about old games through them.
I hope they can capture some of that while they go off in their new direction. |

Loved the 1up Show back in the day, but haven't really been to the site in years.
Giantbomb has taken over as far as personality-driven gaming journalism is concerned. |

God I wish they could do a new 1up show reunion show just talk in front of the camera about games for 3 hours!
Maybe we should kickstart that! Have some money for these guys and girls to fly over to San Fran and do a podcast, once a year. Have at least 2 years of funding Have Area 5 film it in San Fran, and it will be just like old times (A pax panel is not the same, and not everyone can make it to those). What a dream |
