OXM - 8.0 http://www.oxmonline.com/max-payne-3-review

+ Brutal, gory action; great writing; exciting set-pieces and scripted Bullet-Time moments.
+ Stellar production values; compelling multiplayer modes.
– Poor checkpoint spacing induces frustration; awful scoped-weapon sequences; geometry sometimes becomes your enemy.

Considering how they score games, a 7.6 from Gametrailers is like a 6 from Eurogamer. They are the perfect example of a 8-10 review scale.

Seems like the main complaints deal with the fact that this is basically the same game as the first two with a fresh coat of paint and new tech.

I am 175% ok with this.

They don't seem to be big fans of the single player portion. They call out the badly scripted slow-mo set pieces, how the cover system trumps all the slow-mo diving and the best strat is doing slow-mo headshots, how aiming isn't as intuitive as it should be, the weird transition between cutscenes and gameplay(your cover is often blown because of a cutscene to mask the loading time, then the gameplay cuts back and you have a completely different weapon in your hand because...?).

They really like the multiplayer though, as most of the single player's problems don't really effect it

I've disagreed with almost everything Jim Sterling has said in his reviews on games that I've played, so his reviews tend be worthless to me. Most of the things he picks on are absolutely ridiculous to me.

Because if it wasn't like the other 2 games then a handful of these critics would mention it. And from what I've read, they haven't.

What I don't understand about the GT review is that they said it has some of the best graphics this generation and then they give it an 8.3 on presentation. The words don't match the score.

I played about an hour of the first one last night and found it to be okay, but kind of repetitive. Nothing story wise really pulled me in and the shooting/slow-mo mechanics didn't do much for me.

Anyway, just speaking personally here. I may not know how the story plays out from just a few clips, but what I'm seeing looks pretty dumb. I can judge what I'm seeing.

I'm most worried about the reports of bad shooting mechanics. A TPS shouldn't have controls that make it hard to accurately shoot. I always had the suspicion the europhea engine negatively affected responsive and accurate controls based off GTA4 and RDR but this just might confirm it.

Well the cutscene effects are annoying, I havent even played the game and it sucks.

And the floating words are stupid, I think everybody would rather have had comic book cutscenes then go into a SHORT real cutscene and then go into gameplay flawlessly.

That's a possibility. Another one would be that after years of pop and shoot TPS the reviewer had a hard time getting used to MP's specific type of gunplay.
