Talented coders/artists can be replaced to some extent. Blizzards budget and luxury of spending however damn long they want on the game cannot. |

Unlike books or movies, games are a more time consuming form of entertainment. Many people don't have the time to play one game like Diablo let alone 2 or more similar games. So you get comparisons like this which in turn bring out strong feelings in gamers.

If Blizzard was truly smart they'd exploit this for gameplay opportunities that no single player/offline game could easily achieve. Then this always-online requirement might actually be a positive for all involved. But will they?

The reason they have the code server-side is to protect the integrity of the RMAH as well as prevent cheating. Those two reasons are pretty positive in and of themselves.

And if they went down that route it'd make the DRM/security seem like something that actively improves the game rather than passively preventing hacks and exploits. |
