What historical figures do you want a game based on?
#1
I think a JRPG/SRPG based on the life of the Emperor Augustus (Octavian) and the fall of the Roman Republic / rise of the Roman Empire could totally work.
Seriously, the life of Gaius Octavius Thurinus / Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus is already pretty much an endless series of anime tropes, so it'd be impossible for even the most anime-obsessed J-dev to screw it up. 1) Octavian's story is one of those coming-of-age stories JRPG devs love so much. Like Hope from FFXIII, he starts out being a bit of a whiny pansy with an unhealthy relationship with his mother. Unlike Hope, however, what drops from his abdomen when he hits puberty are not just your run-of-the-mill testicles - they're grapefruit-sized cojones forged of pure hardened damascus steel. He has to deal with his own emo sensibilities and overcome them in order to emerge the sole survivor of the second triumvirate. He steps up, becomes a man and rules the world. 2) He has a big sister attraction thing going on with Octavia, at least, according to Marc Antony's propaganda. At the very least, they were close, so that's another anime trope that would be covered for a certain subset of otaku buyers in Japan. 3) You've got some ready-made villains in the lecherous Marc Antony, the formidable Cleopatra... and Marcus Lepidus, who would make a good mid-boss. 4) The story has all sorts of twists and turns (Marc Antony marries Octavian's sister Octavia at one point and has to allow Cicero to die at Antony's hands) and covers decades, so you can put the fresh-faced teen he starts as on the box-art, but keep the majority of the gameplay being as the stone-cold badass Octavian turns into. 5) Varied settings - Spain, Rome, Egypt, Asia Minor, Greece, Mauretania etc. You'd be able to break up the standard field battles with sea battles, sieges/defense etc. and set up some amazing set pieces. Heck, you could do some prequel DLC and play as Julius Caesar tearing through Gaul or play as the legendary lost legion of Crassus battling their way to China 6) He was a bit of a man-whore in real life, so you could implement some kind of relationship mechanic too. Julia Pulcheria dress-ups? Yes please! 7) Gameplay could be Fire Emblem meets FFXII meets Xenoblade, giving you fine control for 1:1 battles, but user-chosen battle commands and auto-scripts for mass battles. Anyway, have at it, GAF. Ever wanted a Teddy Roosevelt hunting sim? A Shaka Zulu RTS? A Jack the Ripper themed LA Noire clone? Let us all know. |

I have always wanted a game where you play as an witch hunter in the inquisition going to villages and rooting out the local witches based on flimsy evidence and confessions from torture. It could always be loosely based on a real person like Torquemade or guazzo.

I wouldn't mind highly stylized and dramatized stories of Genghis Khan and Alexander the Great using fables and myths of their day and integrating them into their respective worlds (i.e. Chimeras and Centuars would be a thing in Alexanders theoretical game).
As for the style of game? I've always wanted more Age of Mythology really, so an RTS I guess. An action RPG and/or action adventure games would be cool too. |

I've always thought the Essex whaling disaster of 1819 was a pretty remarkable story - commanding that crew through that scenario could make for a very interesting game. As awful as the process is, navigating the seas trying to take down sperm whales has potential to be just as exhilarating as trying to take down a Colossus. And then attempting to survive on the ocean with morale rapidly deteriorating and no hope in sight leaves the door open for things to get as dark as they presumably did in real life. That's a game I'd like to play.

Have there ever been games based purely off Mesopotamian myths? |

The only thing Brave Fencer Musashi has to do with the historical figure Miyamoto Musashi is his name.
That's it. I mean, c'mon:

Li Shimin, The co-founder of Tang Dynasty, the golden age of China.
Third son of a general. Incited his father to rebel against corrupted Sui empire and cruel emperor. Won the heart of commoners. A brilliant general and strategist, he united the country more fragmented than 3 kingdoms. Then fought against two jealous older brothers, killed them and became the emperor. Ushered China into the Golden Age, the most prosperous country in the World in his time. Considered one of the wisest and greatest Chinese emperor But nooooooo. You people just want more 3 Kingdoms. EDIT: The Sui-Tang period is a million times more interesting than Three Kingdoms. Which someone make a Total War or Romance of 3K game based on it.
