Why would anyone not want more games based in france or around that culture? I want games set in latin america and want to be in locations in latin america. What about australia and that culture? Barely any games are set in australia.
Games need to be marketable in order to sell, and America is an important market, so.. yeah.

As for latin America, there's Max Payne 3.

Men ages 18-35 is also an important market. Should we also only make games that pander to the stereotype of what men these ages want?

No, but that's what we're gonna get since that's generally what sells.

Probably controversial but a game where you play as Hitler depicting his rise and fall. And it will end with you blowing your brains out.

It could go horribly wrong but in the off chance that it is done right it would be an interesting experience.

Some great replies in this thread already.

I'll throw Ernst Junger out there. He was a German soldier in World War I, and later became famous for publishing his memoir, Storm of Steel. Here's the Wikipedia description:

"Storm of Steel begins with Jünger as a private entering the line with the 73rd Hanoverian Regiment in Champagne. His first taste of combat came at Les Eparges in April 1915 where he was first wounded.

After recuperating, he took an officer's course and achieved the rank of Ensign. He rejoined his regiment on the Arras sector. In 1916, with the Battle of the Somme underway, Jünger's regiment moved to Combles in August for the defence of the village of Guillemont. Here Jünger was fortunate to be wounded again, shortly before the final British assault which captured the village — his platoon was annihilated. In 1917 Jünger saw action during the Battle of Arras in April, the Third Battle of Ypres in July and October, and the German counter-attack during the Battle of Cambrai in November. Jünger led a company of assault troops during the final German Spring Offensive, 21 March 1918 when he was wounded again. On 23 August he suffered his most severe wound when he was shot through the chest."

Supposedly Visceral were working on The Ripper, but I have no idea if the game is still in development or if it's canned. Either way, I'd really like a game based on the Ripper murders.

AAA gaming man. Hast to pander to the American market to sell. That's true of games made in France, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and now it's looking like Japan too. It is lamentable though, and it partly has to do with the fall of middle-class gaming.

The main reasons Japanese gaming and Eastern European gaming still stand out is because they are made with viewpoints based on their native cultures and not to directly pander to Americans. If you want to look for more culturally-based games, your best bet is the PC right now.

They could learn. More importantly, games could be made cool enough to make those settings and historical figures interesting. Movies actually pull it off every once in a while. That website I posted in this thread is dedicated to just that thing.

Thanks for those links, I'll be reading the articles as soon as I have the time. Also, Manfred von Richthofen would be a candidate, although he did appear in the 1990 PC game Red Baron.

Someone in another thread posted that Rockstar should make an open world pirate game, which would be so awesome. They could have you play as some rookie crew member as you guide him towards being the most feared pirate on the ocean and at some point reveal that it is blackbeard or something lol

Hunting sim? Just has average weekend.

Educational game? Him studying history and imagining he was there in the Napoleonic Wars or fighting against Rome or alongside the Irish regiments of the U.S. civil war. Not just land, a student of naval history from 1812 would be right up his alley.

Economic Simulator. Trust building, square deals, threatening them with a stick while working through Panama and all the trades there of.

Point and Click Adventure? Why the Bull Moose party is full of such grand dialogue and being shot.

Survival Horror? The Amazon expedition. Animals and unfriendly tribes with early 20th century supplies running out.

Crossover game. Remember, Scrooge McDuck and Theodore Roosevelt went to war over a very special hill in Duckburg.
I also agree....to me, a Teddy Roosevelt game would be almost like Uncharted meets Professor Layton. I could foresee him taking a young FDR & Ernest Hemingway (for co-op play!) to Africa and have to fight off zombies, natives, wild animals, and look for a lost treasure but of course, he made it all up.

I always imagined a game setting in an alternate 1400s Romania where Vlad the Impaler is actually the real Dracula. You play a Janissary from Sultan's army in the vein of Assassin's Creed, but much more action-adventure oriented (linear, God of War esque). There's virtually unlimited possibilities for scenarios.

Niccolo Machiavelli.

There was a remake of Merchant Prince a while back which took his name, but it wasn't really very, well, Machiavellian. I'm thinking political intrigue in Renaissance Italy has a lot of potential. We sort of saw it from the outside in Assassin's Creed, but it'd be nice to see from the inside, too.

The first half of the book is relatively slow, but it's a good book, based on the premise that the historical Vlad Tepes was actually a vampire. I definitely recommend it.
