Animal Collective: 'We wrote our new album as a rock band'

Quote:
Speaking on BBC Radio 1 last night (May 14), Brian Weitz said that the band had "gone back to their roots" on the new record and moved away from the sample-heavy direction of 'Merriweather Post Pavilion'.

Asked how it differed from their previous albums, Weitz said: "We all moved back to Baltimore, the last few records we've written apart and by sending each other stuff. This time we all wanted to write in the same room together. We went back to our roots and we got a little practice space in this barn on Josh's [Dibb – fellow band member] mum's property and it was like being a garage band again."

He continued: "'Merriweather Post Pavilion' was a very sample-heavy record, we made it piece by piece in the studio, we constructed it. This one we wrote as a rock band in a room and we wanted to record it that way."

Weitz then said that the band had enjoyed all the success that their previous effort had brought with it, but that he wasn't sure if he and his bandmates would be comfortable if Animal Collective got any more high profile.

He said of this: "The reaction to 'Merriweather Post Pavilion' wasn't out of hand, but as the shows and festivals got bigger and we got media attention, that was something we'll have to come to grips with. I don't know we'd be comfortable getting any bigger than that. It wasn't a burden though."

Added a little bit from a BBC1 interview yesterday. Gah, can't wait for them to return.

If you missed their recently released singles: Listen: Animal Collective – “Honeycomb” / “Gotham”

Neither are on the album.

A rare example of a band totally ruined for me before it had a chance because of their fans and influence.

Yeah, stupid, but true.

Here's their whole set from Pitchfork last summer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oA1UoARSX7w

The setlist is almost all new songs and the top comment provides timecodes and tentative titles for all of them. Mercury is awesome and is probably Mercury Man from the album, Frights is the just-released Honeycomb, etc.

Gonna be a sick album, I think.

Interview with Weitz from last year:

Quote:
By March’s end, they had penned 10 tracks under the guiding vision, Weitz says, of an alien band from another planet sampling certain sounds from Earth, a reversal on the many human bands who have toyed around with the sounds associated with outer space. They used old recordings from top-40 radio—radio waves beamed into space—and added snippets of song introductions and the reading of call signals from stations like the old B104.3.

With Fall Be Kind, the new 7", and the Keep tape from last year, really hoping weirder AnCo continues on. If I never have to listen to a bro play My Girls during a party again, it'll be too soon.

I saw them at Stubbs in Austin a few years ago and it was one of the worst shows I've ever seen...and I've seen Sonic Boom play with Speak N Spells for a few hours.

Prior to seeing them I had no idea that they had such a hippie fan base...was stunned.

The worst part? WILL EFFING OLDHAM was playing down the street and I didn't go see him. Still regret it.

Postscript: I ended up really liking Merriweather Post Pavilion when I listened to it again after the show.

Where the hell do you hang out that plays Animal Collective at parties? Even if it is their most accessible song.

I wasn't really into MPP. It had some good tracks but as an album Feels and Strawberry Jam did a lot more for me. I really liked the new singles, and I am excited.

Yeah, I loved MPP when it first landed but I revisit Sung Tongs, Feels and Strawberry Jam much more. I hope they get back to that style although this is sounding even further back.

Eh, I'm hoping they stick with the Beach Boys-y sounding melodies of the last two albums. Though I too loved Fall Be Kind.

Edit: Not saying I don't also love Feels and Sung Tongs! Just stating my preference.

To some people, MPP would be a tough listen. Believe it or not.

I like it the most out of all the AC albums because it strikes that balance between accessible and good. Enough poppiness while not being complete garbage, similar to Radiohead's In Rainbows.

But yeah, I wouldn't imagine anyone playing it at a party. That's just crazy. All that people play when I go out is radio music and other high-exposure music. A real shame.

I'm looking forward to the new AC album.

New interview:

Quote:
"It was really important for us to do something that sounded a little bit rawer and more excitable [than Merriweather Post Pavilion].
The pace and tempos on this one are a lot quicker."
Quote:
To us, Merriweather is a terrestrial record, where you're looking up into space or into the sky, contemplating all this stuff. Comparatively, Centipede Hz is up in space, on a spaceship-- but it's a lot more grounded in one location than off dreamily in the clouds. Since it was all four of us this time around, the idea was to do something a little more live. Most of the rhythm tracks were recorded live by Noah; instrumentation-wise, he doesn't do a lot of other stuff on the record, except for some keyboards here and there.

The songs I contributed are more about thinking outwardly and observing things, rather than looking inward. As a record, it's all over the place. Every song has its own special world, and it moves along really nicely as a full piece. This record definitely sounds like an Animal Collective record. I think Animal Collective fans will be psyched.

Quote:
Centipede Hz is the tenth full length Animal Collective album following the widely celebrated Merriweather Post Pavilion (2009) and also the first since Strawberry Jam (2007) to feature all four original band members: Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Geologist and Deakin. As the album's opening bars of drum crashes and radio interference on 'Moonjock' immediately make clear, having returned as a four piece, Animal Collective have made their most widescreen and fully realized music to date.

Once touring for Merriweather Post Pavilion was concluded at the end of 2009, Animal Collective released their visual album Oddsac on DVD. The film was also screened internationally at theatres and film festivals. The band created Transverse Temporal Gyrus, an installation for the Guggenheim Museum in New York City and subsequently released a 12" single of the performance and launched a website to distribute music from the event. The period between Merriweather Post Pavilion and Centipede Hz also saw the release of two solo albums: Avey Tare's Down There (2010) and Panda Bear's Tomboy (2011).

Regrouping as a four piece with original member Deakin once more in the band, Animal Collective reconvened in their native Baltimore in January-March 2011 to write material for Centipede Hz with a further session later in the year. Rather than swapping ideas over the internet and file-sharing Animal Collective were, for the first time in many years, exchanging ideas in the same room by playing live instruments. As a result Panda Bear returned to playing a sit-down drum kit for the first time since Here Comes The Indian (2003) and Geologist began playing live keyboards again. Along with using some of the samplers and sequencers with which they had previously been writing, the sound of Centipede Hz draws on the dynamics and energy of Animal Collective playing together as a band. The return of Deakin is at its most marked in 'Wide Eyed', a song that he wrote, featuring his first ever lead-vocal performance and whose title captures the mood of Centipede Hz perfectly.

Part of the inspiration for Centipede Hz included the band's memories of growing up listening to station announcements and commercials on the radio and imagining the after life of radio signals from the past, forgotten transmissions that are now lost in space and broadcasting music from other planets for other life forms. This is reflected in the sound of Centipede Hz, which features the white noise of radio interference and buried frequencies overlaid with the band's peerless melodic sensibilities and compositional methods. The result is a panoramic set of songs that shimmer with the confidence and wonder of Animal Collective's unique inner logic and the luminous warmth of their sound world.

Centipede Hz line-up & recording information

Animal Collective: Avey Tare (vocals, synthesizers, piano, guitar, sampler, sequencer, percussion); Panda Bear (vocals, drums, sampler, percussion); Deakin (vocals, baritone guitar, sampler, percussion); Geologist (sampler, synthesizers, piano, percussion)
with: Dave Scher (Beachwood Sparks, All Night Radio) lap steel guitar on 'Today's Supernatural', 'New Town Burnout', 'Pulleys', and 'Gotham', and melodica on 'Rosie Oh' & Riverside Middle School Choir, which sings on 'Father Time' and 'New Town Burnout'.

Centipede Hz was co-produced by Animal Collective and Ben H. Allen III and recorded at Sonic Ranch studios in Tornillo TX (outside of El Paso) in Jan-Feb 2012 by Ben H. Allen III and mixed at Maze Studios in Atlanta, GA by Ben H. Allen III

Deakin:

Quote:
I remember saying, 'This is going to be harder for people to swallow.' There's no doubt about it: people are going to react to this….There was an instant melodic gratification to Merriweather and I think we intentionally made a record this time that is a lot more…um… [laughs] We took a left turn at weird town.

He added: "From the first note of Merriweather you’re like, 'Oh my God, I just wanna dance' or 'My heart's exploding.' This is more like, 'This is amazing but I'm confused and I don't quite know what's going on and I think I need to listen to it again and maybe I should turn it off.'"

I do looooooooooooooove Honeycomb/Gotham, but I guess this album won't be like that...

8 of the songs on the album have been on their setlists for more than a year and they all sound like Animal Collective songs... I mean, they have no doubt changed them up in the studio but it's not like you're about to hear freeform noise-rock or something. I personally like that quote as their last few albums have been heading towards some sort of "normalcy".

Just listened to Today's Supernatural. Pretty damn good. Not the biggest fan of the middle section but overall it's pretty catchy. A lot of the sound effects sound like they're off Strawberry Jam and just the feel and structure kinda do too in my opinion. Strawberry jam's my favorite of their's too so i'm pretty happy.
