Scarlett Johanson laments sexist portrayal of superheroines #1

Whaaat? Wasn't she wearing heels for part of the opening sequence? And there are quite a few shots blatantly framing her ass as the focal point... not that I'm complaining.

Aside from her outfit not being completely zipped up in the front, her outfit wasn't really too bad in terms of not showing skin at least. Though some may argue the fact that it was pretty much skin-tight is a different issue, of course.

I don't remember if she had them on at the start, she picked them up at the very end though. She was supposed to be undercover, so I'm guessing she was dressed up for some social event prior to her "capture."

Black Widow in Avengers was one of the best parts of the movie, if not only because I wasn't expecting it. Definitely didn't take advantage of her looks and anything, and oppositely she served a vital role.

She's referring mainly to the characterization.

Isn't she mainly referring to female characters from comic sources being translated to film? Not talking about film as a whole.

Well not having it zipped up is kind of a thing for the character:

Although, that's also due to the ridiculous sexualization of women in comic books, but that's another story...

Also, I don't think her outfit was THAT skin tight. Sure it was form fitting, but it could have been a lot worse(better?)

Not on the official poster. I think the poster you're thinking about shows her from the back, but she's just standing there. Her ass just happens to stand out because, well, ScarJo.

It's funny, because both Iron Man and Hulk (and both Bruce Banners!) have had shirtless scenes as well. Wonder why one remembers those two, though...

And she's right, most female superheroes are ridiculously oversexualized to the point the most enjoyable ones are the non-serious ones like She-Hulk. Black Widow was surprisingly decent in Avengers. And no people, her ass isn't sticking out as much as you seem to think, it's just that she has a really nice ass. In the movie, not that poster above of course.

she rocked in the avengers and wasn't overly sexualized at all. she was fully clothed the whole time, kicked ass and was one of the most clever characters in her interrogation scenes. super hero stuff is supposed to be sexy both ways - no one wants to see out of shape terrible looking people for 2 and a nalf hours. but it was refreshing to see her really get some solid screen time doing cool things and not just landing all splay legged and whatnot.

I think she makes a decent point. There are still plenty of hurdles that need to be overcome, but The Avengers does better than most.

I don't mean to equivocate, but re-watching the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies has reminded me that all of them contain copipus amounts of female-targeted fanservice.

Her picking up the heels was also a perfect cap because it allows her femininity - something that seems to often be chucked aside in making a STRONG FEMALE™

DKR does this aswell with what we've seen of catwoman. In comparison to Arkham City and the halle berry film, the dark knight rises catwoman is tame.

Superheroines don't need to have 2/3 of their skin exposed to save the day.

That wasn't the first thing that came to my mind. She was a sex icon throughout the entire film. How can she decry the stereotypical portrayal of female characters in these roles whilst at the same adopt it herself?
