Again, I'm not one to claim it's the same thing, but can't we have some exchange ratio between that and all the fanservicey visuals of the male characters? 'Cause there were plenty of those.

Its obvious they did male fan service for the purpose of the movie but the character herself is supposed to be a super spy/assassin. She has to James Bond it up sometimes and that means provacative clothing etc to win over people shes trying to trap.

Its obvious by how shes dressed that they were at something fancier than a warehouse to start

The point she makes about seeing a woman getting her ass beat reminds me of how much I cheered inside during that scene in Die Hard 4.

Not to mention the fact that Avengers had more male sex symbols than it did female sex symbols.

If she was doing serious action sequences while dressed in lingerie, you may have a point. I don't think she's saying she averse to showing skin in a different context.

nah, she was sexy the whole film - not a sex icon. she brought a ton more to the table than just her looks - both in action scenes and acting chops.

Actually, for once, I do think they're comparable. I'll be the first one to argue that it's ridiculous to compare the muscles of male heroes to the tits of the female ones, since one is about wish-fulfillment and the other about fanservice, and in all movies (including Captain America, as drool-worthy as it was) the shirtless scene made some sort of sense... except in Thor. That scene was completely about showing off Chris Hemsworth's godly body and that was indeed fanservice comparable to ScarJo's blatant ass shots in Iron Man 2.

But for a female superhero, played by one of the hottest actresses today, who actively uses her sexuality in the comic, Black Widow was a step forward.

She's talking specifically about superhero and action movies.

Quote:
Whedon: “Studios will tell you: A woman cannot headline an action movie. After The Hunger Games they might stop telling you that a little bit. Whatever you think of the movie, it’s done a great service. And after The Avengers, I think it’s changing.”

Johansson notes, “A lot of the female superhero movies just suck really badly.”

Whedon nods. “The suck factor is not small.”

Johansson: They are really not well made, and already you’re fighting against the tide. There are a couple [female-driven action movies] that have worked-ish, don’t you think?

Hemsworth: Angelina Jolie tends to do it pretty well, as the dominant female.

Jackson: [Grinning] They got to get The Pro to the screen!

Whedon: [Groaning] See, that is the problem. Sam is the problem!

Jackson: I love that book!

Whedon: [Reluctantly] The Pro is hilarious.

Jackson: The Pro’s hilarious. [To the group] You ever see or hear of it?

Johansson: No, what’s The Pro?

Jackson: It’s [a comic book] about a hooker who gets super powers!

Johansson: [Pauses] That is exactly the problem right there.

Whedon: That’s why I wasn’t going to bring up The Pro!

Jackson: It’s a totally dope book, though.

Johansson: I’d have to wear pasties to greenlight any of these movies.

EW: So you think the problem is just too much focus on the sexuality of female superheroes?

Johansson: Yeah, I think they’re always fighting in a bra, so while it might be exciting for a still photo, it’s ridiculous. One of the most exciting thing about [The Avengers,] is that in my opening scene the first thing you see is my character getting punched in the face. Everybody’s like, ‘Damn, it’s nice to see a girl get the sh-t kicked out of her–

Jackson: [Interupting] They also want to know where you get that no-bruise make-up.

Whedon: Wait, you need to let her finish this thought, or this is going to transcribe really badly.

Johansson: [Throws arms up] And then Sam Jackson talks more about the g-string!

Jackson: No! F–k no! I’m in one of the best woman-action-movies ever f–king made — The Long Kiss Goodnight.

Downey: Damn right.

Jackson: Geena Davis f–king kicks ass in that. She is totally dope in that one.

Johansson: There are good ones. And Geena Davis is the perfect woman to be that.

Jackson: They just had no idea how to market that f–king movie — at that time. [The 1996 movie -- written by Iron Man 3 filmmaker Shane Black -- underperformed at the box office, but has since become a cult favorite.]

Johansson: But I do think superhero — superheroine movies are normally really corny and bad. They’re always like, fighting in four inch heels with their [thrusting out her chest] like a two-gun salute.

Hemsworth: [Teasing] There are a few chicks in X-Men.

Johansson: [Smiles] We’ll get more.

Jackson: As soon as we get that movie with you kicking Katniss’ ass, it’s done!

I think The Avengers is in the privileged position of everyone being both well-characterized and easy on the eyes, so some leeway should be given for cheesecake shots of both genders. Everyone wins!

Well, yes. Your initial post tried to point out that Scarlett's being a hypocrite for saying what she did because she's done some photoshoots of her own. I was merely questioning the validity of that since it didn't make sense to me, since she was talking about a specific context and not making a broader generalization. If that wasn't your intent, then disregard my interpretation as an honest mistake.

Scarlett Johanson being able to beat up grown men is more ridiculous than a woman fighting in a bra. She's 5'4 and probably 130lbs. The realism went out the window a long time ago.

I'm not saying she's a hypocrite exactly. I don't care about the morality of it. Johanssen plays all the same sex-publicity games as every other hot, young actress, and then complains that comic book action movies (just about the most Hollywood thing in the world) are overly sexualized? She done well for herself contributing to the popular culture she is now complaining about.

You think because she's narrowing her focus to one outlet of celebrity I should ignore the rest of it? It makes no sense. It's like Rupert Murdoch going on TV and complaining about the lack of serious journalists. And yes, Johanssen is the Murdoch of hotness.
