No, we're acting like (nearly) anything goes because Tony Stark built a magic suit of bulletproof powered armor in a cave in Afghanistan with a nigh-infinite palladium-based power supply I'm the first movie. The "dat shit cray" baseline for the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been set very, very high.

Skimpy superheroine costumes are actually a thing because they distract from the ridiculousness that is superheroines. Scarlett Johanson's costume simply covered so much skin credibility strained to the breaking.

That's not my point. Try reading my entire post. I said there is no realism in this, so she shouldn't be saying wearing a bra while fighting is ridiculous.

I believe you at least partially missed HER point, which was about goofy visuals and treating female characters with kid gloves, rather than realism.

There was a lot of eye candy for straight women / gay men in The Avengers. I was very happy with Chris Evan's ass during the boxing scene, Thor... doing everything, and Mark Ruffalo naked (although obviously covered).

Black Widow should have been played by Camryn Manheim. Then we wouldn't need to have this conversation. She's also a better actress than Johanson so it would be a win-win.

It does. At some point, you just have to roll with stuff. Like, there were gigantic tanks rolling around Norway in the 1940s according to Marvel. Complaining that a woman can't beat someone up because of her size after seeing those kinda ceases to make sense.

It's like complaining about the inconsistent Time-Travel mechanics in that one Ninja Turtles movie. It's a movie where the main characters are talking, bipedal, teenage mutant ninja turtles. Who cares how the Time Travel works? Why protest about that, if you've already accepted the ridiculous premise?

When she was punched in the face was it actually bruised? When ever a woman usually gets hit in movies (that I've seen at least) they are never really any worse for wear.

I don't mean to equivocate, but re-watching the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies has reminded me that all of them contain copipus amounts of female-targeted fanservice.
My gf enjoyed Thor and Captain America primarily because of the fanservice.

avengers still fails the bechdel test miserably. it's a fun little movie but hardly a paragon of gender equality or devoid of sexism. it's just a little more subtle and tucked away.

Both are parts of the male power fantasy model. They dont look the way they do cause its some reverse appeal to women.

I don't think the Bechdel test should be used as a criterion to determine if female characters are worthwhile to a plot. I don't believe a film maker has to keep a check list and cross off the bechdel test to have instrumental female characters.

Bechdel test:

1. It has to have at least two [named] women in it
2. Who talk to each other
3. About something besides a man

yeah, but, are there frequently movies in which at least two male characters don't talk to each other? like, aren't 99% of movies rife with dudes talking to each other?

you're right though, it shouldn't be used as the ultimate barometer.

I think the Bechdel test would be very useful for judging the film industry as a whole (especially if there were an opposite test to create a point of comparison). It really says nothing about an individual film, though.

I am all for the plots of female characters not revolving around men for the duration of a movie or female centric or led movies but I don't see how satisfying (or not) the tenets of the Bechdel test makes for a good or bad movie.

Nah, most versions of the Bechdel test require women to talk about something besides clothing and shopping for the movie to pass. But you're right, if Maria and Natasha had spoken to each other, I could see why it'd be hard to imagine them talking about anything else.

yeah, i didn't mean to start a debate about it. s.johannsen is right in that her portrayal of this character in this movie was not hypersexualized, which is refreshing in a sense. i shouldn't have brought up bechdel, even though i find it to be particularly poignant and effective at demonstrating how totally unrepresentative of a basic reality even the most "progressive" films are.
