Movies are visual experience, so yeah I care how they look. And I don't mean they need to look sexy (altough that's nice), just believable. Zoe Saldana sure is prettier than Gina Carano, but I prefered the action in Haywire over Columbiana. In most of those movies it's equivalent of bad acting when they can't make it believable.

There are two schools of thought on this one.

One is she was just there for eye-candy.

Two, is that it was a plot device, where once her cover was blown and she put on her SHIELD Agent pants, she was pretty no nonsense, all about business.

That was the whole point of her infiltrating Stark Industries, though... being his secretary.

I guess you could argue that way... Though I think I stick with the eye candy option. I remember being genuinely surprised when she turned out to be an interesting character in The Avengers

I more interpreted the picture as a statement of just how ridiculous most women's posses are in comics. It's not bad that they're sexy, but the ridiculous spine-twisting stances push it way over the top.

That goes back to some of the earliest artistic portrayals of the female form. It's exaggerated that way because they are contortions that men are far less capable of and appeal to the mental models we have for the sex.

What always bothers me most is the posing. It completely breaks the illusion when women in comics make that fucking twisty pose that no human being would ever do.

Yeah, it should be better. But as long as men are writing and drawing 90% of superhero comics, it's gonna be a slow process.

I don't think that people in this thread are being "uptight." Criticism regarding gender roles has been applied to movies for years. As comic book movies continue to be such mainstream commercial successes (as opposed to niche products that large audiences are supposed to avoid), it's only natural that they would fall under the same scrutiny.

I think most feminist critiques involve a certain amount of projection and over-thought. For instance, the recent opinion pieces on Girls really shows this off. It's one of the most honest and brave shows on television, and people keep projecting various attitudes onto it.

A lot of these types of opinions seem overly judgmental, idealistic, and prescriptive. Like, I'm all for gender equality, but I still masturbate to some really sexist shit. These movies are cheap entertainment, and yes, they do reflect the times, but it's probably better to just describe the trend than to judge it. These aren't statement movies.

Because sex appeal for men is different than for women. A man's manliness is shown off by having him face forward so his broad chest and shoulders are obvious. A woman's sex appeal is shown off by having her face to the side so her tits and ass are obvious.

The men's sex appeal is being used as much as the female's.

I don't agree that the Bechdel Test is over-thought, if that's what we're discussing. It's a pretty low bar: two named women speaking to each other about something other than a man. The inverse of it (two men talking to each other about something other than a woman) happens in almost every film. It's less about true, idealistic gender equality and more about women having even meager roles in plot progression.

I also don't think it's overly judgmental to point out that a lot of the poses that female comic book characters make are stupid. Because... they really are.

Like Ms. marvel's new costume would be perfect if she had the long hair.
Ms. Marvel is my favourite female hero, bar none. I had no idea they were 'promoting' her to Captain Marvel. Great idea - it'll finally allow her to step out from under the shadow of Mar-vell. Hope Spider-Woman gets similar treatment; both characters are too great to be overshadowed by their male namesakes.

That said, I don't like the new costume. Short hair is fine, less skin is smart, but to me this costume suffers from two major issues: it isn't as distinctive as the previous version, and the double gold lines are uncomfortably reminiscent of Wonder Woman. Hopefully this costume will evolve into something a bit more iconic before too long. Looks a lot better in the picture Slayven posted, so it's by no means an eyesore. But I wish it was a bit more like Moonstone's Dark Avengers Ms Marvel costume (third image).

It's always the same. The only character who has had a gratuitous fanservice scene is Thor in the movies, but to try and argue it's even close in the comics is ridiculous.

And would it be too much to ask to have some more heroines with muscles?

I agree, but I think that has a lot to do with the industry being male dominated, and that strongly exaggerates the tendency.

Everything about these kinds of comic books is stupid though. They were originally designed for boys under the age of 15, many of whom were horny.

I think our mainstream film media being dominated by young adult fiction adaptations, comic book adaptations, toy adaptations, and other generally retarded shit, says way more about the state of our culture than anything else here.

All of that shit is stupid. I don't have a problem with these productions, and enjoy many of them, but they take an overwhelming share of the box office success.

I'd much rather get the weird new hair, than the generic hair 95% of Marvel female characters have.

And her old costumes were the definition of generic. So is the new one.
