No link, but in Independent Filmmaker Mag's latest issue they call it Anderson's best film. Also this was shot on Super 16mm like Black Swan, City of God, The Hurt Locker, I'm Not There, The Wrestler, etc. Neat article on it:

Quote:
This month I’ve been shooting second unit camera for Moonrise Kingdom, directed by my old friend Wes Anderson. Wes and I date back to the pre-Bottle Rocket days, when I used to shoot commercials and industrial films for Owen Wilson’s dad in Dallas. In those days the film medium was all we had if we really wanted to make a movie. The digital thing was still at least a decade away for serious filmmakers.

Which is why this shoot for me on Super 16 was like a breath of fresh air. The S16mm camera strapped to the underbelly of a 270-horsepower Cessna seaplane would be challenging enough for any imaging system, given the physical stress and massive volume of water pouring back over the lens on take-off. Employing a digital camera however in this setup would be sheer folly, given the force and volume of water and the tight waterproofing required to protect the camera from the massive assault. A modern digital cinema given its thermal characteristics would likely not be able to sustain the heat buildup inside many layers of water-tight plastic – without substantial re-engineering with respect to the camera’s cooling fan and concomitant changes in the aerodynamics of the aircraft.

Here the simplicity and reliability of perforated film chugging over sprockets made the most sense, as the film camera was clearly the right tool for the job. The versatility and latitude of the Vision 3 7213 film proved to be just as critical; the lighting conditions aloft changing dramatically as we darted in and out of the thick clouds of an approaching storm.

Seeing it Today (not at Cannes), will post my opinion here afterwards, only seen one Anderson movie: Darjeeling Limited and loved it.

Trailer looked shockingly soft for super 16 mm, and it was digital projection, I thought for a second that they had shot this with a cheap HDSLR, sheer lack of definition, but I guess it's an artistic decision.

I'm going to have to see this in the cinema - can't wait for the disc.

In anticipation of MK, I recently re-watched the previous Anderson films and found that I had a completely different reaction to two of his that I didn't like so much the first time around (Life Aquatic and Darjeeling Ltd) I thought they were great this time around.

I would still place them a bit below Rushmore, Tenenbaums and Fantastic Mr Fox, but those two movies no longer seemed quite so emotionally distant and mechanical as they did the first time I saw them. I'm guessing it had something to do with my state of mind the first time I saw them? Regardless, my change of opinion in those two films has me more excited than ever to see Moonrise. hoping for the best

Cannes Reactions!

THR Review:

Quote:
A blandly inexpressive title is the worst thing about Moonrise Kingdom, a willfully eccentric pubescent love story in which even the most minute detail has been attended to in the manner of the most obsessive maker of 19th century dollhouses.

Although it trades in such large matters as true love, destiny, child abandonment and a storm of historic proportions, these issues are of no greater significance in the film than how two plaid fabrics look next to each other or the specific placement of a piece of Benjamin Britten music. In other words, this is a Wes Anderson film -- more lightweight than some, possessing a stronger emotional undertow than others -- that will strike the uninitiated as conspicuously arch. This Cannes Film Festival opening-night attraction and competition entry offers a raft of rarefied pleasures for the director's core fan base, but the Focus Features offering has scant hope of breaking through to a wider public upon its May 25 U.S. release.
Variety:
Quote:
While no less twee than Wes Anderson’s earlier pictures, Moonrise Kingdom supplies a poignant metaphor for adolescence itself, in which a universally appealing tale of teenage romance cuts through the smug eccentricity and heightened artificiality with which Anderson has allowed himself to be pigeonholed…. While Anderson is essentially a miniaturist, making dollhouse movies about meticulously appareled characters in perfectly appointed environments, each successive film finds him working on a more ambitious scale. Co-written by Roman Coppola, Moonrise Kingdom may not be set anywhere so exotic as a Mediterranean boat (The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou) or a trans-Indian train (The Darjeeling Limited), but it feels even more finely detailed than any of his previous live-action outings. Still, the love story reads loud and clear, charming those not put off by all the production’s potentially distracting ornamentation.
@jamesrocchi:
Quote:
MOONRISE KINGDOM: Whimsical, but also another beautiful Anderson film about grief. Critics saying "more of the same" didn't see last shot.
@benkenigsberg:
Quote:
Moonrise Kingdom: At once the apotheosis & refinement of all things Wes. His most harmonious mix of style and milieu since RUSHMORE. #Cannes
@AwardsDaily:
Quote:
Moonrise Kingdom - interesting, disturbing...interesting. Embeds. But the navel-gazing ultimately wears thin. Marinating in youth etc.
@EricDSnider:

First #Cannes film: Wes Anderson's MOONRISE KINGDOM. It is delightful and very Wes Anderson-y. Great kids in the cast.

Moonrise Kingdom, a perfect delightful way to begin #Cannes2012 Nice to see Bruce Willis challenging himself again
@zaffi:
Quote:
Moonrise Kingdom is a solid entry in Anderson's body of work. Quirky, funny and fantastical but also typical. Fails to do much new. #Cannes
@BayerJeff:
Quote:
Yes, #MoonriseKingdom is good. Wes Anderson fans can all breath a sigh of relief. #Cannes
@gemko:
Quote:
Moonrise Kingdom: 75. Balance between pre-adolescent ardor and adult disappointment a bit wobbly, but mostly delightful in RUSHMORE vein.
@wellshwood:
Quote:
Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" is a typical Anderson thing -- an exactingly composed, super-dollhouse, movie about perfect compositions.
@GuyLodge:
Quote:
MOONRISE KINGDOM (C+) Three courses of dessert, smothered in Desplat. Appealing blush, witty accents, but, as ever, all love and no passion.
@firstshowing:
Quote:
Moonrise Kingdom - Whimsical, charming and honestly a lot of fun. There's nothing like a Wes Anderson film, that's for sure. #Cannes. Can't say I loved Moonrise, but it's good, it's mostly just a lot fun. Well-made as always, but I love a few of Anderson's other films more.

He'd need Owen Wilson co-writing for that, maybe.

Can't wait for this, only 9 more days. Appreciate the updates Expendable. The reviews do nothing for me though, disagreed with just about every review regarding his previous films. Darjeeling was pretty much slated, a lot of fans hailed it as his worst too. Now here I see more and more people claiming it as their favourite Wes.

Moonrise Kingdom represents a sort of non-magical Neverland -- that momentous instant when the world can seem so small and a naive crush can feel all-consuming.
Quote:
A literate, knowing and sweet-hearted reverie about adolescence, that strange gap between childhood and adulthood. It's beautifully rendered by a filmmaker very much in touch with his inner rebel kid.

Undeniably the work of a director with a very specific and pointed comic style who's not for every taste. Those who succumb to its charms will be transported.

Art film par excellence: This meticulously made fable of misunderstood youths is one of Anderson's most artistically striking but also least commercial films.

Ahhh, my eyes will be seeing this in less than an hour! Also, great news: Wes Anderson's next film will take place in Europe and he's half-way done with the script.

I always disagree with Ed, who gives it a 4/10, dropping the grade down to 91% on RT.

Quote:
Anderson throws so much non-sensical stuff at the weaker-than-normal script that Moonrise Kingdom feels like a giant waste of money and a caché of squandered talent.

Dang, I was more mixed on this one. Every shot is gorgeous and perfectly meticulous, as expected. But the script is middling, almost weak. Anderson is too scattered in the first half to really have anything hit home. There is nothing great like the first meal with the brothers in Darjeeling, where you really get a sense of the characters. The focus is almost entirely on the kids, who give average performances. The second half picks up, only in that there is more plot to be had and Anderson has a better sense of pacing and impact.

The supporting characters, while giving good performances, seem too much like caricatures. Ed Norton and Bruce Willis are likely the best of the bunch, but Jason Schwartzman, Harvey Keitel and even Bill Murray are wasted. I wish Anderson wasn't burdened by having all of his go-to actors in the film. I still liked it due to a number of well-orchestrated sequences and the occasionally funny moment, but I have to say it's my least favorite Anderson film considering I'm at least positive on all his others. I'll have to let it ruminate, but for now I'll say that Submarine, now streaming on Instant, explores these themes to a much greater effect.

B-

For those wondering, my rankings:

The Darjeeling Limited/The Royal Tenenbaums (A-)
Fantastic Mr. Fox/Bottle Rocket/Rushmore (B+)
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (B)
Moonrise Kingdom (B-)

I found it definitely harder to get into than previous Anderson films, and I think it's mostly due to the 2 kids (Sam especially). I know they were meant to be socially awkward and a little hard to like, but every time the film switched to the adult cast I felt much more engaged . Willis, Norton, Murray and McDormand were great but I wish they had more scenes.

Days after viewing I still find myself thinking about it though, so I'll have to see it again to make up my mind about it. Oh, and beautifully shot as always.

I'd say Rushmore, Royal Tenenbaums and The Aquatic Life are must see.
