I think it needs to be seen in motion, those pics arn't really doing it justice I assume. If anything those demo shots look worst than Samaritan which incidentally looks fantastic

Someone on here kept saying not to expect much more than Samaritan, don't remember who but someone said it. Should've listen. Maybe in motion this will look amazing, but this stills just look a little past Samaritan.

Wasn't there a story that this actually was demoed on a new console devkit at GDC?

Ah ok, the bigger screenshots look much better. There's no doubt that UE4 will be a very good engine next gen. I had my reservations on UE3 early on, but it has produced some really nice looking multiplat games across the board.

Batman, 50 cent and UT3 are all nice looking games.

I love how Epic makes it sound like all their own engines short-comings were universal to the whole industry. Let's ignore the fact that Cry Engine 2 did 100% dynamic lighting back in 2007.

My memory could be off, but I recall UE3 having demos to the public running on PC hardware with no consoles mentioned.

Samaritan looked great even in still screens. I know that's what I saw first while waiting for the video to load.

No more pre-baked lighting is pretty big news.

Also of note is that, unlike Samaritan, parts of this demo were actually playable.

There was a Gears based UE3 demo at E3 2004.

I recall the screenshots being a lot more impressive for their time than this seems today. Guess I have to see it in motion.

Reading the description of the whole demo, I would definitely reserve comment until we see the thing in motion, in full.

On another note, I wonder if Nintendo was there, at the GDC thing. They go unnamed in the article.

Same here, want to see it on motion though. Still, if this is the top-tier target for next generation visuals I think I had my expectations a bit too high. I hope at the very least they're targeting this at 1080p native.

Then the twist: Willard reveals that both the cinematic scene and the following tech demo haven’t been running off a game file but in real time from within UE4′s game editor. It’s like finding out that the actors on TV are actually tiny people living inside your set. It also helps him show that changes can be made to the game’s design and code, recompiled and executed nearly instantly—a technical feat that has been simply unheard-of in game development. And just like that, the silence in the room becomes reverent. The videogame industry has changed.

A lot of the questions being asked in here are pretty much addressed in that story. Why they would show it without an announced console, hardware it's running on etc.

Back on topic these screens look great and I'm sure that in motion it's gonna look incredible.

Ok if it's rendered in real-time in the editor, then it's quite impressive. And the real-time lightning too. But still the end result doesn't look different from current-gen games.
Need to see it in motion too.

I'm more interested in the possibilities of how this can streamline development of 'big' games. That seems like a bigger piece of news to me than just 'soooo many polygons!!'

From the article:

Quote:
In a scant three months of production, a team of 14 engineers has fashioned a video demo to show off the new engine, and it acts essentially as a full-featured, if small, top-of-the-line game—the first title of the next generation. “I had sleepless nights over this damn thing in the beginning, but I think we got the disasters out of the way,” says art director Chris Perna, the man responsible for the look and feel of the demo. Lead artist Wyeth Johnson adds, “In the time I have been here, we have never not pulled it off.” Johnson, a six-year veteran of Epic, is referring not only to the company’s ability to deliver on tight deadlines but also its track record of wowing the skeptics.
Hmm, fourteen engineers to create this. The first image doesn't strike me as very impressive, but I like the other images. The polygon count could probably be higher, especially for those mountains, but textures and particles are of high quality.

Without a white paper on the engine it's rather difficult to put this imagery in perspective. I assume more is going to be shown at E3.

Nope, I am not seeing Mark Reign's claim of this making Samaritan demo look like "crap". Usual PR bullshit. Still, I guess, things may look up in motion.

However, this one of the more important betterments that is most welcome (I guess I'll find more as I read the whole article):

Quote:
UE4 represents nothing less than the foundation for the next decade of gaming. It may make Microsoft and Sony rethink how much horsepower they’ll need for their new hardware. It will streamline game development, allowing studios to do in 12 months what can take two years or more today.
If this is true then it'll save both time and money for the devs.

Very odd feeling.

However, as others say, video may make it look better. That being said, it feels like a lot of energy used to get things to look only slightly better HOWEVER, if it streamlines the production process, then I'm all for it.
