What Setting Would You Like to See Rockstar Make a Game In?
#1
Not necessarily for a GTA game since they seem to have branched out from that.
I'm sure other people have noticed this, but ever since Bully Rockstar has been branching out with games in different settings that follow the same basic format as GTA: sandbox gameplay, various missions spread throughout, big focus on story, well-directed cut scenes. They've just been bringing that format to settings that wouldn't necessarily "fit" with the words "Grand Theft Auto". It also seems to me like each game they do can be roughly equated to a movie: GTA3 = Sopranos (I haven't actually played it so go ahead and call me on this one) Vice City = Scarface & Miami Vice (same) San Andreas = Boyz n' the Hood GTAIV = Niko was inspired by that dude from Behind Enemy Lines? (yeah IV is probably the exception) Bully = Problem Child (or any 80's and 90's American school movie) Red Dead Redemption = Unforgiven L.A. Noire = L.A. Confidential Yakuza = Battles Without Honor and Humanity ;) What setting would you want to see them tackle with this gameplay format? Personally I think I'd be interested in seeing some more historical settings explored in sandbox gameplay (yeah yeah Assassin's Creed but whatever). A part of me wants to see Rockstar attempt a Samurai game styled like Yojimbo or the Zatoichi films, with the same basic plot as Red Dead, as sort of a play on the westerns that were based on Kurosawa's films. In my mind, ideally it would be a collaboration between them and a Japanese company like Capcom who would provide the voice actors, art direction, and adapt Red Dead's story. |

A Rockstar samurai epic would be cool, but I feel that they would get it all completely wrong unless someone within the hierarchy lived and breathed those type of movies and history. Then you have the fact that there would be a high chance that it would be done in English making the whole thing seem unnatural.
I mean after all they are one of the best weavers when it comes to stories about redemption and revenges and shit, which is what half of those old flicks were about. |

An Italian Giallo in the Argento/Fulci/Bava style. How that would translate to an action game, I don't know. I guess make it something like Heavy Rain. I'd love to hear what they dig up for the soundtrack.

Going on the samurai tangent, I think they should do a medieval epic since it would be a heck of a lot easier to screw around in that type of setting. Knights, horses, fucking mythical dragon maybe, tonnes of kings and queens and lords and barons and mistresses. It would be like A Song of Ice and Fire except with more crazy hijinks.
But the obvious choice is a pirate or steampunk (as mentioned, Blade Runner style) theme. |

I want them to look at Shadowrun on the Genesis, realize it was kind of a precursor to what they'd eventually do with the 3D GTA games, and then bring it full circle: Open world cyber punk reimagining of Shadowrun Genesis w/o actually calling it Shadowrun. Most of the game would be in the vein of Max Payne 3 TPS combat and the hacking would be an elaborate turn-based RPG. The blueprint is already there for a pretty cool game, and has been for decades.

A Samurai setting of course would only make sense if they got help from a Japanese company that could provide voice actors and the actual storyline. |

The closest they ever had to that was Grand Theft Auto 2's weird quasi -futuristic world.... which really wasn't like Blade Runner at all. :P
Rockstar Also had a 70's street gang New York setting with The Warriors (well it was based on a movie), a 60's London setting with GTA London, and a China Town setting (ChinaTown Wars). .Maybe they could have a 60's era Hawaii five-O setting? Give te main character te ability to surf... why? I don't know. |

I think the strength of R*, and why they have so much mainstream appeal, is that they stay firmly grounded in reality and ignore the tedious sci-fi and fantasy tropes that infect 99% of videogames.
They should do a Shoot the Piano Player/Breathless style 60s France Takeshi Kitano style meditative yakuza The Third Man style post war Europe Colonial era Hong Kong/Shanghai 70's/80's Australian mullet culture Late 80's early 90's English acid house culture set around The Haçienda |

Canada. Anywhere in Canada - let Rockstar Toronto or Vancouver play around a bit. I couldn't care less whether they made a GTA based on Toronto, a Bully-style game in the small-town prairies, or even a game set during the Yukon Gold Rush. I'm sure Americans wouldn't mind playing a game set north of the border.
They'd totally mind. It wouldn't sell 50,000. |
