I have 100% faith in Rockstar that they can create a sick anime styled cyberpunk game. It seems like the devs at Rockstar have a love for anime based on ONI and those animes that you. An watch in Gay Tony. They would nail a Japanese setting probably better than most Japanese devs.

I don't think it would be a Star Trek kind of thing though. Probably closer to the environment of Star Wars' bounty hunters and smugglers, or Firefly (what I know of it). Basically crime drama, but in space. |

GTA: GTA I always thought they should do a theme like detroit and a city across the lakes with snow added to the random weather. |

Detroit is ripe for caricature considering the state of the auto industry, Michigan politics and the economy in that area. You'd have areas like Flint that are just, very run down midwestern areas, and then across the map you have places like Grosse Pointe where the executives live. Chicago is similar; a nice metropolitan downtown and then just lots and lots of space around it without feeling like a complete blight. Neighborhoods like Oak Park contrast with places like Gary and the infamous Chicago projects like Cabrini Green. Lots of rail transportation in the area and O'Hare. The Great Lakes setting also gives you an excuse to have lots of boats, bridges, etc. to divide the city up. I could see it as an amalgamation of Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland and Buffalo/Niagara. The whole region hasn't really been done and it's ripe for mockery; kind of the borderlands between the Rust and Bible Belts. Oh, and the climate is different, you could actually set it in winter. Midwest cities in the winter are all over the place between drab and depressing and gorgeous. New York obviously gets snow but somehow it doesn't feel like it has a chance to stay put and turns into a grey plowed mess. Kinda surprised they haven't done it already.

Something with lots of melee combat. Rockstar isn't super great at it in the way that Kamiya or Itagaki are, but Bully and Warriors both worked pretty well as old timey beat-em-ups, and I'm curious as to how such games would work with Euphoria animation.
Ideal options: Turn of the Century China (VS the Boxer Rebellion), Occupied China (VS Japanese military and the axe gang), really-old timey New York (Like the Warriors, except immigrants instead of colorful comic book characters) Maybe a game based on Lone Wolf and Cub that makes the ruling daimyo guys look like like the same kind of giant toolsheds that anyone with any iota of authority always is in a Rockstar game? Or maybe a game where you're a soldier in the the splintered factions vying for control of the crumbling Roman Empire... |

Exactly, that's why they would make an excellent fantasy or science fiction game. Other than Blade Runner, another franchise that would be a great fit would be Battlestar Galactica.

I'd like them to make a unique game in a previously unexplored genre, rather than a unique game in a genre that's been done to death. I'm not saying they wouldn't make a cool sci-fi game, they would, just that there are already plenty of other cool sci-fi games out there (Deus Ex etc), but there aren't all that many games in genres that the entire industry (aside from Rocktar) seems to have no interest in. Get me? edit: and I don't think you really understood what I was saying in the first place. Rockstar games are appealing because they are based in reality. There is no magical fairies, space ships, aliens, elves, trolls. There is nothing supernatural in their games. They may be satirical and over the top and based on film more than real life but there is nothing otherworldly. That's where their appeal comes from.

I definitely agree with that. Hell that was a failing in MP3 to an extent but they seem to really stick to it. That's why I would like to see them step out of their comfort zone and see how they would ground something that isn't traditionally grounded. |

I think they should just redo GTA: London
London 1969 is an awesome setting, and the soundtrack would be epic beyond belief. Failing that, the western setting worked really well, but maybe let them go back further, i.e California/Yukon goldrush or the civil war, the 1860s is a really interesting time period in American history.

That's exactly what I was thinking of. Yeah Psychonauts is probably the closest thing there is, completely suits the premise of the game too. I hope that new Pixar movie is a straight up clone.

Blade Runner is my #1 answer. Sci-fi but still really moody and atmospheric with a world that's perfect for what Rockstar does best: Action/crime. I really don't want Rockstar touching high fantasy settings as part of their appeal is the gritty, grounded crime stories they tell.

Blade Runner would indeed be interesting, but so would a pirate game.
I'm also probably one of the few who would love to see an open world action/rpg Monkey Island spin-off. A game that perhaps takes place between MI2 and 3, or even before LeChuck becomes undead or something like that. And no, I don't want to control Guybrush, since he is all about puzzle-solving and not so much about fighting. Some people would say that the world isn't really unique and is more about the three main characters, but I agree and disagree at the same time. A point'n'click Monkey Island wouldn't be the same without Guybrush, LeChuck and the voodoo lady. But an action/rpg would be different. However, I'm not sure I would like to see Rockstar making that game, since they're more about sarcasm and satire than traditional humour. So either Blade Runner, or an original Pirate game. |
