Video Game Films - If YOU were in charge
#1
Let's say a film exec comes to you. He's got a good script for YOUR favourite video game series (one game in the series). It's solid. Now, he needs help selecting a director and the cast, and he wants your suggestions. What's the series, who should direct it, and who should star in it? You can't stop the coming creatively bankrupt adaptations, but with a solid script and crew/cast, you can make sure a good movie is produced out of it. It can be any game from the past twenty years. There are no financial restrictions, so hire who you want. Only caveat is that they must still be alive.
* Reboots are allowed, if for example you want to re-do Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Max Payne, Hitman, etc. If I could, I'd re-do Max Payne. Make sure the script is solid, and I'd hire Michael Mann or Shane Black to direct it. I'd hire Guy Pearce to star as Max. |

Max Payne directed by Michael Mann starring Guy Pearce would be amazing. Good call.
- Kane & Lynch directed by Quentin Taranatino with Bruce Willis as Kane, and Bryan Cranston as Lynch. - Red Dead Redemption directed by Andrew Dominik with Josh Brolin as John Marston + Nick Cave & Warren Ellis doing music (yes Jesse James part II, so what?) - Half Life directed by Neill Blomkamp (watch District 9 if you're confused) starring Ed Norton as Gordon Freeman - Gears of War or Halo directed by James Cameron - Uncharted directed by Joss Whedon starring (in shape) Nathan Fillion as Nathan Drake - Mass Effect and/or Metroid directed by Ridley Scott with Noomi Rapace as Shepard and/or Samus - Grand Theft Auto IV directed by Guy Ritchie . Ensemble movie about the diamond deal and all the characters from the game and expansions it involved.

Do I have to use the film exec's script, and can I choose myself to direct it? Because I'd hire an experienced writer to help me write a script, and then direct a kickass Metroid movie.
Wouldn't be a good fit at all. Joss Whedon's forte is in quirky dialogue amongst an ensemble cast of characters. That's pretty much the opposite of what a good Metroid movie would be. A Metroid movie should be about Samus, and the character she interacts with most should be a giant purple space dragon that doesn't talk. |

More?
- Infamous directed by Edgar Wright starring Simon Pegg as Cole, and Nick Frost as Zeke - Dead Space directed by Guillermo del Toro with his Hellboy/Pan's Labyrinth costume + makeup team - Mirror's Edge directed by The Wachowskis with Maggie Q as Faith - Heavy Rain directed by David Fincher. Never played the game but it seems like a good fit. - Zelda directed by Peter Jackson |

I can see this. Hmm... I'm on the fence between these two, but Dean is a slightly better pick, I'll admit. I assume we're talking Max Payne 1 era for this.

Zelda shouldn't be Lord of the Rings with Zelda characters. Metroid shouldn't be Alien with Metroid characters. Halo shouldn't be Avatar with Halo characters. Half-Life shouldn't be District 9 with Half-Life characters. You think these games and directors would be good fits because the directors have done movies similar to these games, but that's precisely why I think they wouldn't be good fits. The best adaptations come from the most unexpected sources. Who expected the guy behind Memento to do a great job with Batman, or the guy behind Elf to do a great job with Iron Man, or the guy behind some weird low budget B-grade horror movies to win freakin' Best Picture with his interpretation of Lord of the Rings? When we finally get a genuinely good video game movie, it won't be from an obvious fit like the ones you're mentioning. It'll probably be from someone who hasn't done a big budget blockbuster before, but has a respect for the source material and video games in general. |

For a thread like this, I'll pick Blomkamp for Half Life because District 9 made it look like he could make a badass Half Life movie. I'm not really going deeper than that. :P

I'd do Resident Evil properly with a revision of the George A Romero script based on the first game that was originally rejected.
Michelle Monaghan as Jill, Tom Hardy as Chris, Brendan Gleeson as Barry, Michael Fassbender as Wesker. Tempted to pick Guillermo Del Toro as director for this as well, otherwise David Fincher. |

Chrono Trigger, easily. That game is a 3-part film in the making. First film is everything until they first reach the End of Time- make it an Episode IV style romp until they learn about Lavos and things get more serious. Part 2 could be focused on the war against Magus and the reforging of the Masamune- more of an epic than the first. Part 3 can pick up after they first enter Antiquity and roll until the end.
Ideally, I'd have Edgar Wright direct, but basically I want someone who understands how to direct adventure films akin to the Original Trilogy, Indy, BttF etc. Someone who can juggle themes and tones is essential too (hence why I'd have Wright). Whedon might be good too, given how well he tackled Avengers. Dunno who I'd have as Crono, but as for the rest: Magus- Mark Strong Frog- voice of Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jamie from GoT) Lucca- Jenna Louise Coleman Ayla- I really want Gillian Jacobs here but she's not exactly built for it... anyone know any strong blond actresses? Get Gina Carano to die her hair for it? :lol Marle- If Hayden Panettiere didn't blow as an actress I'd say her... Anna Kendrick? Robo- fuck knows. Microsoft Sam. Queen Zeal- Judi Dench So yeah. Potential there. |
