Ever sit in awe at the amount of games made per year? #1

I'm not talking about just the games released for the major consoles. But every game made, period. All platforms and all avenues of distribution. I'm not even considering the ones made in the East that never reach the West.

Has anyone ever person ever sat down and tried to figure out how many games are released in a given year? I can't even put a guess on it. 3000? Which would mean about 9 games every day.

In 2009, there were 1099 games released on the DS/PS2/PSP/Wii/PS3/360.

I'm scared of what would happen if you added iOS to that list.

Not just iOS, but WiiWare, XBLA, PC Flash games, Indy games, browser games, etc.

Heck, a group like Big Fish, pumps out about a game every day.

It seems more to me like not enough games are made. I haven't played a game in almost a month, I've just been waiting... When I don't have to wait for games to come out anymore then I'll be in awe at the amount of games made per year

If you can't find anything to play you're not looking hard enough. We just had 2 huge releases, if you've already burned through both of those I pity you. Combined with XBLA/PSN releases and my backlog I never have nothing to play.

Quality over quantity, IMO

I think what's far more incredible is how bad most of them are. If your profession is making games, it's shocking to me that, statistically, you're bad at it. Especially when gamers like us have no problem picking apart quality from crap, how is it even possible to take a look at the product you're making and not realize it's a pile of garbage?

Most games that are released every year are statistically bad, and that's an insane thought to me. What other industry is like that? (I guess a lot, maybe. Probably not to this extent, though.) Can you imagine if 75% of restaurants in your city were awful?

And only about 5% of them matter.

Realistically, at least 75% of restaurants in a given city are going to be awful.

But yeah, most movies are bad, most books are bad, and most music is bad. That's just how things are. But even with all that crap, at least there are always those few who get it and make something great.

I can definitely imagine a 75% awful rate for books, films, and other forms of entertainment that are comparable to videogames.

I mostly play Nintendo games so I'm usually good at spotting the crap from afar. :)

I've been gaming since 1990. and I remember the time when there were 2-3 games worth playing in a year.

2011. (especially the Aug-Dec period) was PACKED with AMAZING games. And on that note I hate that holiday-lets-cram-all-games-a-week-or-two-apart mantra. But I think that's dying a bit (Bioshock Infinite pushed to Feb 2013, ...).

Now think about the amount of games bought at full price. Poor wallets.

If the internet has taught me anything it's that 100% of everything is awful and you're stupid for liking it.
