Getting FFIX on PSN...
#1
I've been hearing that it's the best of the PS1 era FFs and I finally have the money and time to play a length JRPG.
Are there any issues with the PSN version? What the best comprehensive guide out there? And what's this about an Excalibur II? I'm an RPG completionist and I hate not being able to get all of the best armor, weapons, and equipment the first time through. |

PSN version is fine. Original discs had no issues and it's just a ROM dump.
I've 100%'d it with no issue. There's an excellent perfect game/Excalibur II guide on gamefaqs if you're into that, but that'd be an awful way to play through the first time. You have to basically beat the game in less than 12 hours to get Exc2. |

I'm not sure about the best guide (I'd just use GameFAQS personally) but I got about half-way through the game and there's no issues at all with the PSN version that I noticed. I don't know what you'll be playing it on but it looked pretty great on a PSP. |

I've never gotten Excalibur II, even though I've beaten the game 8 or 9 times now. Never beaten Ozma either though.

The most exciting part for me was the return to 4 member parties. The future! |

Well you have to beat the game in like 12 hours to get that weapon, good luck on your first run. |

Its really the characters that sell it. Vivi and Steiner are just beyond charming.

I'd love to go back and grab it someday to actually finish it - I got up to the last battle but ran out of ethers consequently giving up forever. My only issue is having to deal with a PAL copy but I'm sure I'll jump through a few hoops to somehow get an NTSC digital copy.

I can't believe that this weapon was made to be gotten in the game. If people don't skip the FMV sequences it's not possible so how would the game makers intend you to do this legitly? It made me so mad I could never get it. Is there an interview with the game makers or something that explain why it's like this?

If someone never had played a JRPG before, would you suggest a PS1 FF game, or a PS1 JRPG at all, to see what all the hub-ub is about? (Would have to be something available on PSN.)
I was thinking about picking up FF VII, because that's usually what's lauded as the best. |

If you don't mind the dated graphics, then yeah it's a pretty good game. It was many people's first JRPG, so if you've never played a JRPG before, FFVII is probably as good a introduction as any. It's fun and a classic.

It's not my fave FF but FFVII had a really engaging story that kept me playing. It's worth playing through.

I'm willing to take suggestions as to what the best of the best is, at least in terms of it being on PS1, on PSN. Basically, if you were to try and show someone who never played a JRPG before, what would you hold up and say "play this," in hopes of showing the highs the genre can reach?

One of my favorite FFs. Finished it last summer w/ 98 hours of playtime recorded, all equipment, character abilities, cards, chocobo treasures (even beat Ozma), EVERYTHING, and then my PS3 and saves were lost to YLOD.
Very good game, but personally I always needed to grind before major events. I remember 4 circumstances in my last playthrough. The first one before the Lindblum festival when I had to level up Zidane to level 15 to have a good chance against the Zagnol, the second inside Burmecia before the battle with Beatrix (some would argue this preparation isn't needed as Beatrix doesn't kill you, but the Ironites outside give some good EXP and AP, reached level 18 I think), the third just after meeting Eiko where I trained outside of Madain Sari and the Iifa Tree in preparation for the battle against Soulcage (level 35), and the fourth in Disc 3 (I think) just before going to Kuja's desert palace, where with the equipment I had gathered I had pretty much 90% of all my abilities right in my inventory, so I went to the north-western snow continent around Esto Gaza and spent 3 or 4 days there leveling up and learning abilities for all my characters. I think I managed to take every character (even my unused ones, in the lower level tier) from level 18-40 to levels 45-55, which pretty much meant I didn't need to grind for the rest of the game, at all, just fighting the random battles. These could also be a fifth "training ground" in-between the first 4, but I can't remember it at the moment.

If you grew up with 4 and 6 on the SNES, 9 is an awesome throwback to that style of FF which I really appreciated. No matter what it's a good game, but that aspect of it gives it an edge for me, personally.

I just looked online, but yeah, apparently it did. It had a feature where the second player could play as the other characters, but they had no control over the world map, if that makes sense.
I've never played it, but just Googled it and it came up from a few sources. |

Really? *Starts hitting google* EDIT: yes, in battles you can play two player, with the second player using two of the party members. Only player one can move on the map though. I cannot believe I did not know this.

downside is after you're hooked with the series, Suikoden 2 is not on psn and that's the best one... |

If I remember correctly other FF games allow this too. PS1 versions of FF6 I think does.

Yup, played some of both VI and IX that way with a friend. It's not so much "multiplayer" as it is "user controller port 2 to input character 3 and 4s battle actions".

If I remember proper, I think it's impossible, or just much more difficult to obtain Excalibur II on the PSN version. In the original you could open the disc tray to skip the cinemas, but theres no such thing in the digital versions, so it adds about an hour extra time.
Either way, don't go for it, rushing through a game isn't fun, especially a JRPG like this. |

Yeah definitely no need for Excal 2.
By that point of the game everyone should have some ability that lets them do 9999 damage per round. |
