I played this for the first few weeks of release but hackers absolutely ruined it for me. Which was disappointing because they touted steamworks as their safe guard and it either wasn't enabled or didn't do anything about aimbotters and wallhackers. Anyone have any recent experience with the game to report?

Yeah, but at the time it was the only one with any action and a <150 ping. I'm in NA.
=P I also love the bolt action rifles. They just felt good. Hoping the optimization is noticeable for me. It ran pretty poorly even with some tweaking. Meanwhile I can play SE:V2 maxed out and it's buttery smooth. I know the scope of the MP is drastically different but it ran like shit even when I dumbed it way the hell down. |

The tank AI is an aimbot though, quite literally, but that is being taken care of. |

Free weekend starts 10 AM PST on Thursday, May 24 so I guess that's the latest when the update will hit (probably earlier in order to enable updating of servers for the new players). |

Game is so much better now. Only played on a Classic mode server but here's the breakdown.
- FOV = 90 huzzah! - Graphics are tidied up, and it doesn't feel sluggish anymore when running around. - They somehow upped the gunplay to the point where rifle & manual bolting feels more sublime than possible. - VoIP is clear and no hassles. Last time I played it months ago, it was all over the joint. - Server browsers show you how many bots are on the server so you can avoid them like the plague. - Mamayev Kurgan feels like running a rat race at times in a good way. - No idea how good the machine guns were, but there was a guy we were playing against who was using one and was a damn ghost with the thing. The first 10mins or so was akin to being back in physics class but once you rediscovered what hotkeys do what and sinking back in to the tactical play, it slowly began to feel like proper Red Orchestra. Realistically the game should have come out at this stage but I guess the fear of BF3 was too much, despite there being an obvious lull in the FPS department. Interested to try out the Action mode but I'll probably only do that over the weekend. |

Weird. I was hoping this would be ready, as no update was queued, but when I launched the game it added "Update Required" to the name in my Steam list. I've never seen a game do that before, usually they just start updating on their own.
Well, that sucks! I actually got into the game, I just couldn't see any servers. I restarted Steam and now I have 5 gigs to catch up on. :( |

Is this for real?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiqNF...&feature=g-u-u RO2 isn't winning any GOTY awards, Tripwire. Stop deluding yourselves. |

As a newbie don't rush to the objective. Take the rifleman class which has the least responsibility and pay good attention to your surroundings to get a feel for the maps. Don't run around in the open, sprint from cover to cover and zig-zag when you are facing the enemy lines. Pay attention to muzzle flashes in windows to spot snipers. What you experience happens occasionally on some servers (server crash/restart?). Use the console and type "reconnect" and you will connect to the same server again.

I tested the patch for half an hour or so and my initial impression is that the game runs solid smooth now. Everything at high/ultra and I'm getting solid 60fps, no dips or anything. Even the mouse control feels great now. Last year the game was sluggish and I couldn't get it to run at solid frame rates at all. |

Yeah, you'll end up spending a lot of time crawling around prone, which feels quite unnatural at first. I've spent around 5 minutes crawling just to get to a good position. Also, the key to a good MG position is one that gives you a good field of fire with the fewest places an enemy can be concealed. For example, setting an MG up in plain sight of a building with many windows is a bad idea. |

the game feels like night and day comparing to pre-patch. Everything is more smooth, snappier, cover works much better, perfomance is top-notch. If it was released in this state it would be a hit. I'll recommend my friend to download this.

Seriously? This piece of shit was my worst purchase of last year, and I have a hard time believing that it won any awards. I probably won't even bother reinstalling it and playing with the 62 people or so that are still playing.
I'm still upset they borked this so bad after RO1. |

I played 1 realism match. Got 6 kills and an accidental teamkill with a grenade. It feels pretty good and my team was really awesome with like 6 people with mics talking about the points and giving strats and what not. I'll probably try a few more matches and maybe get it. Having to identify who is Russian and who is German is pretty crazy. Found myself too far up and actually got 2 kills on guys who were past me closer to my spawn.

Anyway the patch is a huge upgrade.
- Pay attention to the colour of the uniforms - Russians run around holding their rifles with two hands, Germans will only use one - The helmets of both fractions differ in shape, but the commander hats are pretty identical, so watch out - If someone is aiming at the enemy lines he is most likely not your enemy |

Client-side hit detection should help with accuracy in a big way, especially over longer distances. Some servers trialled it when it was a fan-made mutator, and it was a huge improvement for me personally.

A lot of people don't even realise how many games have client side hit detection nowdays, like BF3 (bunch of people I've talked with have been completely oblivious to this fact).
EDIT: Also, with the current sale it's almost criminal not to buy this :P
