Holy fuck, this is like a completely new game.
Pre-patch, I had two major issues: the ridiculously janky character animations (going into prone, climbing over shit, crouching, running, etc.) and poor performance. Both have been completely remedied. Character animations seem so smooth and seamless now, which is partly attributable to the INSANE PERFORMANCE BOOST. I'm serious. Pre-patch on High I was getting about 20fps less than I am now on Ultra. It's mind-boggling. Suffice to say, this is how the game should have released. Better late than never I suppose. |

God, the controls and general gameplay in this game are so refined and intuitive. Sprinting from crouch into standing and then diving into prone is buttery smooth. And killing shit in this game is more satisfying than it is in nearly any other shooter. Love the kill feedback with the cloud of blood spraying from the enemy's chest as his lifeless body slumps to the ground.

Though I've only played this with the Action gametype, I'm really enjoying RO2. And thanks to an awesome friend, I now have a Deluxe Edition sitting in my Steam inventory. :D
Also, during a match, one of the Russian soldiers decided to go nuts with a mounted MG.

I suggest disabling all the effects such as bloom, light shafts etc., should run very good on mid to high even on low and middling PCs then. |

I know this numbers boost is largely temporary, as RO2 certainly isn't the game for everyone, and it isn't trying to be. But this free weekend, post-update, is exactly what it needs.
Games in general need to do this more often, perhaps even once every couple of months, as it boosts sales and player numbers far more than a sale on it's own would do. I'd imagine Steam has some sort of limit on how often you could do this, though. |

High five. My phone line did the same thing this week taking me out for 4 days. Just finally got it back. Now I'm trying to download the patch. :/

I already enjoyed my time with RO2 a few months ago, so I'll happily jump back in. Can't say I'm a big fan of action mode though. It's a great idea for newcomers, but it kind of nullifies the intense satisfaction that comes from frantically shooting fools in a building with the mp40 without crosshair.

Nothing finer than a 64p server with everyone chatting through the mic and playing the classes how they are. So good.
I still love that apprehension of hitting a guy in the body with a bullet and not knowing whether he is dying or can recover. |

That was fun. 3 Times I had to do my settings, because the 'Game needs to restart for settings to change effects' just closed the game, when I opened it my settings were reset. First server I join, 1 minute later everyone's hanging and 'connection to the server lost'.

Edit: I know it's a pain but couldn't you edit the .ini files manually then set them to read-only? That way the game should be unable to overwrite your settings and only load what you specified.

That is true. I would try verifying the game cache, it usually works (although it did not work in NiN's case). There is a config tool floating somewhere in the Steam forums, don't know if it still works but if it does it's good for people that don't want to work with .inis. I was brought up with (Quake) this so part of the fun for me is always adjusting the game to my liking.

So I should expect it to run nicely on my C2D E8500, 5870 4gB rig then. Sweet. And if not, I'm upgrading my CPU in autumn anyway :D
Edit:
Also, checked your usual suspects when it comes to connectivity issues? Firewall, router port settings etc? A patch shouldn't change things but hey, stranger things do happen.

The game has been unplayable for me. Open server browser, select one, enter, choose a side, a role, then see it's completely empty (yes, I read that it's a 40/64 player server before entering) and when it's not empty I can see the ghost camera for a bit before the game completely lags out since I see someone for example running and hitting the wall without changing direction.
I really wanted to try this game out, but it happens on every single server I'm joining. Bah, all that download for nothing. |

Wow, taht was a great game. People working together, squad leaders marking artillery and communicating with the commander. We ran out reinforcements so everyone pulled back into the trenches and let them come to us. So tense being one of the few left in the game, hiding in a trench as german soldier ran past, then one runs into my room. I go to fire "click" shit I forgot to reload! Charge him and bayonette the guy, reload and shoot the next guy that came in. Then it was back to hiding :D

The main difficult thing to learn is how to use the SL and Commander classes effectively (especially the latter). But it's easier to get a feel for the game than some people think. And it's certainly easier than in some "hardcore" tactical games I've played.

I'll never forget around launch, playing with a guy who sounded at least fifty, as he was totally role playing and barking orders at us in character. It was like stumbling into the gaming room of a comic book shop. So awesome. I'm getting a similar thing in DayZ. For all the brutal PKing that's possible, people are really helpful and friendly, and you end up teaming up more often than getting murdered. So I guess it's not hardcore gamers that are alienating. Seems like its the big games where the shit floats to the top.

I did, I had the Unreal Tournament 2004 Editor's Choice Edition(I miss playing that, so fun) with the Red Orchestra mods and others. I liked it alot and RO:Ostfront was cool. Still getting familiar with this game but....
(Reposted from what I said in the Steam Thread) I think the mods will be better games. Rising Storm looks nice Rising Storm website and I think In Country a Vietnam Mod In Country website looks great just from early footage & a Helicopter!!. I enjoyed playing Vietcong 2 multiplayer. So even if I don't play RO2 that much it's still a good investment. I liked the more varied maps of that the mod and first retail game has RO_Berlin was fun. Just focusing on Stalingrad wasn't a great idea.

Oh maaaan. Classic mode. Limited special classes (bulk of the game is rifles, YEAH!), no class upgrades to give players with more time invested in the game any advantage. RO1 vibes indeed. This mode should have been included at launch. Seems like zoom is out, too. Oh well, no more rifleman-sniping!
The new map is awesome. Trench warfare ^_^ Ran deep inside one of the bunker complexes. Spotted two Germans passing through a tunnel up ahead, but they just ran pass without seeing me. Knowing where they were headed, I went through another entrance, lobbed a grenade. Peeked, they were disoriented and looking in the other direction. Pick one off, then run off through the other entrance towards the tunnel they used to get there. Meanwhile, the other German is looking for ghosts, not knowing where I am. Finally, I jump at him. I think it was a deer-in-headlights moment, because he had a good 1/2-1 sec to try to shot me. But I gutted him with good old bayonet instead. Being on the German side of the trench/bunker complex, they didn't expect me to be there. I sneak, hid behind some sandbags, and saw another German jumping into the trenches. Because of my position, his back was facing me. Bolt-actioned him, then scouted ahead to see what other havoc I could wreck, but then got teamkilled by a well-meaning player :( This game is amazing. The attention to detail is staggering. For example, if you reload your Mosin-Nagant rifle (a clip holds 5 bullets) = if your rifle is empty, you put in a new clip of 5 bullets. If you have at least 1 bullet left. You manually insert extra bullets in your gun (if you have 2 bullets; you insert 3 bullets in - but you have to go through the motion of putting 3 separate bullets in, so OCD-reloading after every few shots is not necessarily a good idea!). If you HOLD the reload button, you check your gun to see about how many bullets you have left (which is a boon for weapons with larger clips such as SMG's or MG's). In the semi-auto rifles (SVT-40), your gun can hold 10 bullets, but they come in clips of 5. So if you have more than 5 bullets left, you will insert individual bullets (eg. 8 = insert 2). If you have 5 or less (eg. you expended a full clip), you will insert a brand new 5-bullet clip. This attention to detail blows my mind.
