This thread got me thinking..... would it ever be possible to release an agent of some form into the ocean that devours or converts the salt in salt water? I.e. worldwide desalinization? Bit random but just a thought..

Wow, that would fuck up the eco-system quite nicely. Would probably take quite some time until the freshwater fish would populate the ocean.

Didn't marine life evolve to adapt to salt water? I don't know, I always thought most marine life could live in fresh water for some reason, that's not accurate?

no, salt water is heavier and full of more stuff.

they would suffocate in fresh water.

only some species of fish that live in salt water could survive in fresh. very seldom, iirc, are fresh water fish able to live in salt water, too.

Because you'd have to walk a 1/2 mile around the pool just to get to the ocean?

Try putting a salt water fish in fresh water and see how long they last. Some marine life can live in fresh water but its not very many. Bull sharks have been known to find their way into river systems.
Quote:
Bull sharks can also be found in fresh water that connects with salt water and have been caught in the Mississippi River as far upstream as Illinois.

Species of fish that can adapt to a range of salinities are known as euryhalinic and a wikipedia listing can be found here.

Of course, nothing can really beat the Victoria Falls or Mosi Oa-Tunya (The Smoke That Thunders) at Southern Zambia. Also known as the Devil's Pool. Oh yeah, it is twice as tall as Niagara Waterfalls.

It's actually prohibited to go into it. Powerful waves and currents and often very cold.

The pool in the OP looks incredibly wasteful. The ocean is steps away.

As a pool owner myself I know how much it has to be filtered and treated.

It was originally meant to be symmetrical, with a "nose" on the left as well.

I see that some on GAF seem to totally neglect the fact that a lot of people are terrified of swimming in the ocean. They do not like the unknown. Not knowing what is swimming beneath them, and then there are these things called movies where people die in the most horrible way when swimming in it (Jaws and what not) which does not make the situation any better.

I'm a strong swimmer, love marine life, and yet I vastly prefer actually swimming in a pool than in the ocean. Salt water is irritating.

As for Chile's oceans? Go be like every other clueless tourist I see when I go visit family: jump in, and I'll laugh like I always do when I hear the high-pitched wail that always follows the shock of how cold that water is.

Even if the ocean was perfectly fine, rinsing off and relaxing in a pool is actually great after being in the ocean. There's no reason you have to do only one. We have a ton of pools here in hotels right next to the ocean.
