Wow, that would fuck up the eco-system quite nicely. Would probably take quite some time until the freshwater fish would populate the ocean.

they would suffocate in fresh water. only some species of fish that live in salt water could survive in fresh. very seldom, iirc, are fresh water fish able to live in salt water, too. |

Species of fish that can adapt to a range of salinities are known as euryhalinic and a wikipedia listing can be found here.

This place sure spends a lot of money on creating these viral photo specials every year.
It's actually prohibited to go into it. Powerful waves and currents and often very cold.

I see that some on GAF seem to totally neglect the fact that a lot of people are terrified of swimming in the ocean. They do not like the unknown. Not knowing what is swimming beneath them, and then there are these things called movies where people die in the most horrible way when swimming in it (Jaws and what not) which does not make the situation any better.

I'm a strong swimmer, love marine life, and yet I vastly prefer actually swimming in a pool than in the ocean. Salt water is irritating.
As for Chile's oceans? Go be like every other clueless tourist I see when I go visit family: jump in, and I'll laugh like I always do when I hear the high-pitched wail that always follows the shock of how cold that water is. |

Even if the ocean was perfectly fine, rinsing off and relaxing in a pool is actually great after being in the ocean. There's no reason you have to do only one. We have a ton of pools here in hotels right next to the ocean.
