Comedy Bang! Bang! on IFC–FriJun8 10/9c–Scott Aukerman, Reggie Watts & so many more #1

Comedy Bang! Bang! is a new comedy on IFC based on the long-running podcast of the same name. Host Scott Aukerman (creator of Between Two Ferns and writer on Mr. Show) and band leader Reggie Watts (famed improvisational musician/comedian) bring on well-known celebrities like Amy Poehler, Zach Galifianakis, Jon Hamm, and so many more along with less-well-known figures like Don DiMello and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Hot Saucerman and Reggie Watts do a real interview show while doing an interview show parody while breaking away completely for insane sketches. The podcast is seriously hilarious and everything I've seen of the show so far makes it look, at the absolute least, unique. Just as the audio version is for comedy nerds, the show seems to sporadically blend all kinds of comedy so you never really know what to expect from Reggie and Shop Talkerman.

The first season begins airing on Friday, June 8th at 10/9c. But right now you can watch the entire second episode on IFC's site. Do it now!

Other videos and stuff to check out beforehand:

Oh how I wish I had IFC (which I assume is an American cable channel?).

I really love the podcast. I've been listening since the Comedy Death Ray days.

I need more Scott Aukerman in my life.

EDIT: Oh no. First response in a thread is embarrassing.

The Amy Poeler episode is free on iTunes right now. I've been getting into the podcast a lot more as of late. Not really a big fan of Aukerman himself but the guests and what he gets them to do is always fantastic.

Yeah, US cable network. They are pretty good about putting their shows on Netflix, though I don't even know if it'll be on the possible version of netflix that you have. Anyway, maybe the show will get some international love, I'd probably just wait for word from Scott.

Yeah I posted the Amy Poehler ep in the OP.
And I think it takes a while for people to appreciate what Aukerman does. I didn't like him much at first, but the more episodes you listen to the more you realize how deftly he guides the improvisation and how well he sets others up for awesome jokes. I think the fact that he's so key to the structure of the show while being pretty funny on his own is cool.

I just started listening to this after someone in the Community thread linked to it and really liked it. Ill have to check out the show on IFC.

That game where they each yell out a word and then continue yelling out words until they yell out the same one is awesome.

Oh I love that game. I think I prefer "would you rather" though, as long as the guests know how to play/learn quickly. I especially enjoy it with Paul F Tompkins doing cake boss or something.

I didn't think much of Scott Aukerman at first either. I didn't dislike him, but thought he was just okay. But after a while I got to really enjoy what he does. The show would never work without him and CDR/CBB is one of my favourite things ever.

It really sucks I can't see this. I wish I was American sometimes.

I wonder how they're gonna have Paul F. Tompkins play all of his characters on camera.

Especially since my favorite character of his is Ice T. I can't wait to see how they make that happen without putting him in blackface.

Never listened to the podcast. Just watched Ep2. I actually enjoyed what I saw, and would tune in again.

Is the podcast a "you had to be there" sort of thing, or could I go back and start listening from the beginning and still enjoy it fully?

I wouldn't recommend starting from the beginning, but jump around the archives and listen to episodes with guests you want to hear. That's how I got into it.

Apart from seasonal events (xmas, oscars etc) the show doesn't have much to do with what's happening in the real world unless there was a big news story (Michael Jackson dun dead). Each show is independent but Characters grow when they return and there are plenty of callbacks.

Do as Banana Kid did and jump around randomly or just listen to episodes featuring specific people you enjoy until you get a good taste. If you enjoy them I'd recommend starting from the beginning so you could bathe in the Good One.

Just watched episode 2. Reggie's trailer. lols

Also The Choctaw was on the nerdist this week. Nice retrospective chat with him and Hardwick about CDR the stage show up to CBB on IFC - http://www.nerdist.com/2012/05/nerdi...cott-aukerman/

Like others have said, it's a good idea to just jump through the archive and listen to episodes from people you recognize. I only started listening to the show a little over a year ago when I saw some celebrity I loved on the show, but since then I've tried to listen to plenty of the past episodes.
I'd highly recommend listening to any episode with Harris Wittels, Paul F. Tompkins, and Andy Daly. There are plenty of wonderful ones without those three, but they're my consistent favorites. Oh, also, listen to the Halloween episodes. Those are great.

I still call the podcast Comedy Death Ray. Never got on board with Bang Bang.

I liked the Amy Poehler episode a lot. Reggie Watts being such a big part of the show had me a little worried (not a fan) but it turned out really good. Hopefully it's successful. It doesn't seem like it can last but IFC is usually pretty good at letting things find an audience.

I'd be worried if it were on any other network but IFC gave Todd Margaret 12 episodes and has Portlandia as one of its more successful shows. This is just as obtuse as those and has just as much of a cult following already, so I think it'll be a winner for the network.

It doesn't really capture what makes the podcast amazing (the longform character work and constant inprov required to keep a character going for an hour, as well as the structure, informality, and conversational tone that makes the non-character guests hilarious, etc), but at the end of the day that's a good thing.

It is so much better that it is a tight twenty minutes filled with sketches and visuals and all the stuff Scott can't do on the podcast. If it was just a pale imitation of the podcast, it would be funny, but not nearly as good.

And it's great that it's on IFC. I don't think it could have happened anywhere else on tv. Less pressure to perform ratingswise, and they definitely let Scott have free reign to make a thing that is both a pure distillation of his comic voice and a platform for him to showcase his hilarious friends, just as he's been doing for years with the podcast and live show.

Nice to see a thread. Every clip I've seen so far has been pretty hilarious, I'm surprised it transitioned so well to the screen.

I hope this show eventually has Brett Gelman on, he's one of my favorites and the "fued" between him and Scottabot is one of my favorite running gags.

In the clip where he plays Webber he looks nothing like Webber, which I think makes it funnier, because nobody acknowledges it.

I really hope so, too. And I think there's a pretty good chance.

We've gotten Don Dimelo, and Dame Sir ALW is confirmed by the ten minute preview. And Huell Howser is going to be on the premiere episode, if I am not mistaken. With Andy Daly, PFT, and James Adomian accounted for, I think we can expect a Seth Morris character and possibly a Nick Kroll if we're lucky.

What characters are you guys hoping for? My wish list is Bob Ducca, Chupacabra, Cake Boss, Jesse Ventura, Bobby Bottleservice, and Ice T (who unfortunately is extremely unlikely, as was pointed out a few posts up (it would be pretty funny to just have PFT do the voice with no skin alteration actually)).

He was just of You Made it Weird but he was pretty negative on the limited phone joke stand up he's been doing. Presume he's going to go back to Parks since Susan 313 doesn't appear to be going anywhere.

I really don't expect it to happen but a Cyber Thug takeover would be nice.

Interview with Saucerman.
Quote:
Which podcast guests are you sad didn’t get to be on the show?

Jesse the Mind Ventura or I guess his nickname is Jesse the heart Ventura now. I wish we could have had Jason Mantzoukas on, but he was filming “The Dictator” the entire time and we all know how that turned out. We know he regrets it too. It’s the biggest regret of his life. I would have liked to have Marissa Wompler on, but she was off appearing on BFF the entire time.

Who is your dream guest?

Any guest living or dead? I guess I would have Adolph Hitler, so I could assassinate him on air. After I got a couple of questions in. I actually have a gun underneath my seat cushion just in case any guest is going to be a dictator in the future. That way I can assassinate them immediately. That is the Comedy Bang! Bang! promise.

[...]

Will “Harris’ Foam Corner” make its way onto the show?

Harris fans –if there are any — will be very very happy for one episode for about ten seconds.

Well, Dish Network just dropped IFC. There's now a gap between AMC (channel 130) and Turner Classic Movies (channel 132) where my IFC used to be.

I just hope Scott gets a taste of the $20 I paid iTunes to do the work my dvr should be doing.

Hah, this interview of Scott-a-bot is so great (bonus Jason Mantzoukas).
http://www.kcet.org/socal/food/midnight-snack/midnight-snack-la-poubelle-with-scott-aukerman-jason-mantzoukas.html

Quote:
Scott Aukerman: It's a talk show, but the show is also like... if your grandpa was down in the basement and he wanted to murder you, and you were constantly trying to avoid him. That's sort of what the show is, I think.

Jason Mantzoukas: Wait. Are you the murderous grandpa?

Scott: I'm constantly trying to murder you, and you're trying to avoid me.

Jason: OK, that sounds good.

[...]

Farley: As far as the IFC show goes, do you feel like it's been a long time coming?

Scott: Too long! Like, what the fuck took it so long?!

Jason: Woah, woah, woah. Be humble, Scott.

Scott: Shut up Jason. Who are you to think that I shouldn't have a TV show?!

Jason: This interview is not going to turn out the way you want it to.

Scott: Honestly though, it's crazy to me that I have a TV show. It's weird. I don't deserve it.

Jason: I agree. Everybody agrees.

[...]

Farley: Do you feel like you're any sort of elder statesman now? I have to imagine a writer like Tim Kalpakis looks up to you as a successful comedy writer.

Scott: Listen, should Tim Kalpakis look up to me? Yes. Absolutely.

Jason: Oh, boy. Is that where we're at? Is that what's happening?

Scott: It's the circle of life. We all feed upon the young and their energy.

Jason: Jesus. There's a recorder going. I want to remind you, someone is recording this.

Farley: This is dangerously close to being entered as a court document.

[...]
Scott: Honestly, I'm more proud of this show than I am with "Mr. Show." I think they're maybe not as ambitious as "Mr. Show," and I'm not trying to draw that hard comparison, but I'm very proud of what we were able to achieve with the show. It's been a dream come true.

All I wanted to do was make a show that I loved. I'm so grateful that IFC loves it, and they would hopefully want to make more, and I'm incredibly bowled over that the audience seems to love it as well. Most great shows come out of just trying to make something you love, and that's all I wanted to do. That, and make a show where Jason wasn't always texting on his phone, and he actually pretended to be interested in what I'm saying.

Jason: Oh, come on. I've already heard all your press points.

Great premiere. There wasn't even a dud sketch; I thought "Tsk-Tsk Attaboy" was gonna suck but that twist ending was gold. And the character guests randomly talking about fountain Pepsi was awesome, the kind of stuff I love in the show and was worried wouldn't carry over enough.

Oh, and Gillian Jacobs as a freedom fighter for a minute was great.

The games work too. It's exactly like we were told, a full CBB game wouldn't work on a half-hour, but a joke game can be hilarious and short.

Now I'm kinda sad I watched the second ep already though, means I have to wait two weeks for more. Next week there is more Bunk though, I expected nothing from that show but it was pretty funny.
