This.

The parent obviously already doesn't give a shit ordering them liquid diabetes as a drink might as well booze it up.

You should always test the drink first... I thought this was like an unspoken rule when it comes to kids.

This could make good material for Louie

I had them all the time as a kid. Was never an issue. They're freakin delicious.

Ha, when I worked at a restaurant, I did something way stupider once.

There were about six people at the table. Among the other drinks, the parent ordered a small Coke for their kid, and the dad ordered a single rye and Coke.

These two drinks come in identical glasses.

I'm not sure who is to blame - the bartender, for not using the usual one-straw, two-straw method, and for not putting the drinks in the order they were rung in - or me, for not making ABSOLUTELY SURE I knew before I took them to the table.

Anyway, I never got in trouble even though the woman called the restaurant the next day. Once we knew the girl was fine we all had a laugh. I'll tell you, it certainly didn't make any kind of national news.

Yep. My parents never tested my drinks when I other one. That's just weirdly overprotective.

Would a few sips of an alcoholic beverage really made a small kid that ill?

What does it tell us about gender stereotypes and peer pressure that a "girl drink" is something that actually tastes good but is considered weak, while a "guy drunk" tastes like shit but is considered masculine

No, bringing the kid to the hospital was someone (probably the mother) overreacting. All it would take is one sip on the kid's drink or one stiff of his breath to find out alcohol is the culprit to his weird behavior.

Glad I've never worried about it. My guy friends have given me some shit over the years, but I order what I want. My main drink is bourbon+coke, which is generally considered a man's drink, but I'm not afraid to order a martini or long island if I'm in the mood...and very rarely I'll order a pina colada because they're fucking good :p

I used to have virgin Pina Coladas all the time when I was younger. It's basically just a slushie at that point. The bigger questions is, why did the kids kept drinking it? Unless they were weak ass daiquiris you should be able to taste the rum and that should have turned the kids off on the first sip.

No. It's most likely everyone involved wisely playing it safe. Yeah, it's unlikely, but what if the drink was particularly strong, and what if by "consumed more of it" we actually mean he drank most of it. When you've got a 4-year-old kid that shows signs of intoxication, it's certainly not preposterous to assume that there's a chance of alcohol poisoning.

And, again, since we're talking about a 4-year-old, they're not just going to give him a cup of black coffee to drink and let him ride it out.

Fair enough. I don't have kids so I can't relate to this situation but you make a good point.

what's the point of ordering a 4yr old virgin daiquiri's? a 4yr old should be drinking only milk and water.

Yes, exactly this. Kids should never drink apple/grape/orange/etc juice. Only milk and water everyday. They also never deserve a treat while out. Ever.

I wonder if people would still be saying "4 year old's should be drinking milk etc. instead of a virgin daiquiri" if it said strawberry slurpee. They're pretty much the same thing, especially if it's a virgin.

I don't understand why 4 year old's should only be drinking milk, juice, water etc.

Probably because -- and pardon me for being presumptuous -- the people making the suggestion don't have kids.

I always wanted Blue Hawaiians when I was a kid. Now that I can drink them, I don't want them because they are overpriced and blue curacao stains teeth and clothes.

I have kids thanks and was a bartender for many years.

My point was more geared at having your kid emulate mommy or daddy who is drinking the real deal.

There is nothing wrong with ordering one but as someone else mentioned you might want to to check it first.

There's no such thing as bad press, right? I'd go check that restaurant out if I lived close, to be honest.

I'd order a drink too.

Funny semi-related story: A table brought their kids with them and had a bit too much wine. The table wanted some Shirley Temples for the kids after a while. My co-worker, a bartender, loathed this table, so he put redbull into their kids' drinks. The kids were standing on the table singing after a while and then the entire table was asked to leave.

That's what it is now. A martini is still a martini too, but that doesn't mean there aren't stupid different kinds.
