LTTP: Mario Kart Arcade GP #1

So here I am catching the ferry to Vancouver, when I walk past the little arcade room, and lo and behold, what do I see in the corner of my eye? Two Mario Kart GP machines. I had never seen one before, in fact I totally forgot it even existed. So of course I had to try it out and got my brother to hop on the second machine.

Let me just say this game was kind of underwhelming. Maybe it was my machine but the controls seemed a little...loose? The items we got were also pretty lame and we played one of the Rainbow Road tracks, and that was also pretty disappointing. Maybe there's better tracks or something.

Anyways, I'm glad I got a chance to try it out, regardless.

Played the sequel in Tokyo a few weeks ago and have to say that I like the arcade games more than the console versions (except for maybe the N64 version). Maybe its the overall package or that I can't stand playing a MK game more than a few minutes at a time, I don't know.

I'm with you OP. Thought it was extremely boring.

Yeah, completely agree. Way too simple courses and not much in the way of interesting items. Can really tell it wasn't made by Nintendo. If anyone has a Chuck-E-Cheese nearby (and doesn't have a problem going to a 'kids' place), some of them have the MKGP machines, too. For a token a play, you can get through all the courses for ~$10-$20, just to see what they're like. Taking your picture for the race is kind of neat, but can't see Nintendo allowing that in on-line play for Wii U. :P

Didn't Namco publish/develop this game?

It's exactly how you would expect a Namco developed Mario Kart to be. It's a boring game.

Never played it, but I've heard that it isn't very good.

I'd still love to give it a try one day.

I'm assuming you played at CHQ? I played it a while back with some friends and family. It was pretty solid but for a dollar to play only one track is pretty lame.

No I played it on the ferry between Victoria and Vancity. Maybe I'll give it another shot if I'm at Metrotown. CHQ is in Metrotown, right?

This is where Chuck-E-Cheese's "all games, one token each" comes in handy. :) (If you don't mind going to a 'kids' place.)

Derp I should really read the whole OP. Really though I can't really judge the game that harshly since I only played it once but it was fun while it lasted. I do agree the controls didn't really feel tight but it wasn't that slow from what I remember, Bowser handled alot better than his usual stiffness.

Yes it is.

If only! Most games cost two or three tokens nowadays. And those Purikuras are expensive too.

Thought it may be a local thing, but the website has "All Games One Token" right on the front page. Are you referring to a non-U.S. CEC, then?

Sorry I meant to say, if only other places adopted the same system rather than CECs in general.

Some people here have said the games look better than the ones on the system but they're shallow in design and don't even deserve the Mario Kart name.
