Batman: Arkham Asylum. Yes, this is a licensed property, with all the obligations that follow, but it is also clearly made by people who genuinely love the property and love playing videogames. Nearly everything they throw at you is made to make you smile, or feel a hearty, "Fuck Yeah, I'm The Goddamn Batman!"
Yeah I agree with that, and I would throw Arkham City in as well. Both games were very clearly developed by people who love the characters, because they got pretty much all of them perfect.

KOF XIII: One of few games this gen to really make me feel the devs gave their all + more. Even believe it with the DLC. They took what they had available to them, and stretched it so far. Really feels like the stages, single player content (story mode, arcade mode dialog), and detail scope (background characters, references, homages, etc) are really the work of a team that truly has love for what came before them in the series, and want to do their best to honor what came before them.

Dragon's Dogma: I can't say this personally yet, as I haven't played it due to my 360 being busted, but the previews and details to gameplay... it shows that kind of love that I just don't get from Elder Scrolls series. I love it when games show an understanding of what *I* want to do in a game, and go beyond what previous iterations and systems have done. It really makes a game feel like it's not just a product, but a game BY gamers, FOR gamers.

Same for Bayonetta. Made me feel as I did when I played Gunstar Super Heroes. This is a game with people who just LOVE old school, classic games, and while making something new and modern, they're going to shell out as much love for everything they enjoy, as they can.

Warriors Orochi 3! As often as Koei gives us sequels, they always seem to try very hard to make the games grow, regardless of if every reviewer out there can see this or not. They innovate and create rather well, within their structure, and I'm glad they've come far since the possibly necessairy mis-steps of DW6.

Guardian Heroes HD, as well. I love the fact that game was basically 2 releases in one, and I think they did a fantastic job updating an old classic, in a way that felt like a logical growth, rather than a forced "MODERN! MODERN! MAKE IT MODERN!" spoonfeeding.

Honorable mention to Borderlands, too. Mostly from the DLC, even moreso than the main game. The game itself was great, but the DLC seemed like it was made with a care that showed they learned what worked, and what didn't, over the time of dev'n the game.

Indeed. You can just look at the battle system alone and see so much details in the animation.

Watching Batman disassemble a rifle in a middle of a combo in AC is fucking awesome.

Witcher 2
Fallout 3/NV: GOTY

Both of those are byfar worth their retail.

The games that have really made me feel the time and effort invested by the team this generation... Well, I'll list my favorite experiences for this gen I guess:

Uncharted 1-3 - What can't be said about how fun and amazing these game experiences are? People love to hate on them for the focus on the "cinematic experience" but I love how well done the entire package is. It's like playing an Indiana Jones game ... anyone who grew up with those movies would love playing these games.

Fallout 3 - I have sunk over 200 hours into this game, with zero mods, on my PS3. Yeah, I dealt with the infrequent freezing and stuff. Some of the DLC was unplayable with my main saves but man, I LOVE that game, the experience it gave me.

Nier - So different and unique of a game, combining so many gameplay elements and such a unique story. The ending had me yelling at my TV.

inFAMOUS 1-2 - Absolutely loved the combat, platforming/exploring, characters and the story. Hoping for a third one. Seriously.

God of War III - Everyone loves to hate on Kratos/the game's story, but it's quite an amazing experience.

Bayonetta - Lots of my friends hated on her design, I loved everything about that game.

and the biggie:

Burnout Paradise - I freaking love that game, just love it. I go back to play it consistently even after getting the platinum and getting the records on practically every road via motorcycle. I love racing games, but I adore arcade-y, easy to get into but incredibly deep experiences and Burnout Paradise definitely gave that with it's open world and it's overall feel, plus the amount of extras, collectibles and so on was insane.

Can't really think of anything else, but those games had me coming back for more, if not play them nonstop until I beat them. They were just that damn good.

It's still very fresh in my mind, so I'll toss my hat in too for Kid Icarus: Uprising. From the characters to the ridiculous battle scenarios to the just as ridiculous weaponry and amount of content, you can feel like the developers just spent all day bouncing ideas off each other, and whatever made other staff members laugh or go "that's cool!" was thrown into the game.

I'm going to throw an honorable mention in to Tatsunoko vs. Capcom as well. Not the greatest game out there content-wise, but I love the style of the whole thing and I can't help but imagine that the development team got a real kick out of inventing fighting game movesets for one of Japan's most classic animation studios.

Heavenly Sword

Some really nice environments, some of the moves look good, the music is great, the mo cap and voice acting is stellar (Including Andy Serkis as the dramatic director), and some nice graphical work from WETA. The developers said they had to wait until the PS3 hardware came out so their vision could be finished.

A shame the fights are often unresponsive and not very good. Style over substance.

Some of my favorites from this gen. No doubt I am probably forgetting a few, but these sit at the top:

Demon's Souls and Dark Souls- Nothing else like them this gen in terms of both combat, level design and atmosphere.

Dragon's Dogma- The pacing, hugely varied and well executed gameplay, the sense of adventure and growth, epic encounters and attention to so many small details and nuances make it an instant classic for me.

Oblivion and Skyrim- Despite the bugs, scaling and awful combat, the world in the Elder Scrolls is always wonderful and is special to me for that reason alone. It just feels good being there and losing yourself for hours in.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow- The modernized, top-shelf 3D Castlevania I have wanted for years. It also has one of the best endings I can recall. Can't wait for the sequel.

Alice: Madness Returns- Some amazing levels that were no doubt made with love and are like nothing else. Just a beautiful and wild experience to play through.

GTA IV- Obviously crafted with a ton of attention and care. Despite being more focused on realism a bit, it's still an amazing game that had a ton put into it. As is always the case with GTA.

Mass Effect- First in the series, best in the series. ME2 was fun, but the way the series ended left a terrible taste in my mouth with ME3. It still felt like a BioWare game that was created with care back in '07 and will rank as one of my favorites this gen for that.

Portal 1 & 2- Just brilliantly crafted games that are funny and thought provoking at the same time.

HeartGold and SoulSilver were definitely packed with love and caring. They captured all the beauty in G&S and recreated it flawlessly, and then packed in all the extra stuff they came up with in Platinum.

Also, Advance Wars Dual Strike. The team was clearly attached to all the characters of the franchise, and the redrawn sprites, alternate costumes, and inter-CO interaction really adds a special level of detail.

I felt that way playing Rayman Origins, Borderlands, Portal 2, Machinarium, Sword & Sworcery and Botanicula. The attention to detail and quality these games show, in particular Rayman, can only be a product of a team that really dedicated themselves to making the game as good possible.

Another vote for Alpha Protocol. The amazing attention to detail makes up for its many downsides. I'm replaying it right now, and I just discovered an optional mission hidden in a dialogue tree. If a current-gen game matches this level of replayability, I would be glad to know its name.

What I would give for a sequel. Now I know how Shenmue fans feel!

I'm surprised by the lack of LittleBIGPlanet in this thread. That's what immediately popped into my mind.

The character and flare of that game constantly evinced the passion and care the Media Molecule team put into LBP, and a large number of user created levels show the love others have put into it since.

No particular order here at all. #94

Demon's Souls- There was something very special about this one. I could see the developers smiling every time I lost my souls. I've always felt some intangible difference between the Souls games, and I think this is it.

Skyrim- I know it was buggy, but it's a big game and it's incredibly detailed.

GTAIV- Yeah, I'll agree with GTAIV. I didn't like the game...like, at all. It still felt like they spent a lot of time on it though.

Read Dead Redemption- Maybe Rockstar just got tired of GTA, because I felt like you could feel some freshness / excitement coming off of RDR.

Mass Effect- I didn't get to play much of this game, but anyone who builds such a deep, rich setting belongs on the list IMO. The other two apparently weren't as bright eyed as this first, though.

MGS4- They put a ton of effort into making this as flawless as they could. I really enjoyed the ride.

Resistance: Fall of Man- It felt like Insomniac was extremely excited to do something new, and this was definitely a game that was crafted. Resistance 2 felt soulless, though.

LittleBigPlanet is cool and they do some really impressive things when you understand the context (they're using assets that they give everyone, and do some very ingenious things with them). On this level, I can see your argument. If you played the game online and made your own levels before going into SP, you'd almost certainly feel this way. However...I don't know. I just can't get the feeling that they spent as much time laboring over those levels as Bethesda did on Skyrim or something like that. On an artistic/love level, they definitely belong.

Burnout Paradise- Everything about this game feels like it was made with a lot of love for the game itself and the community.
Though the most impressive aspect has to be it's online component(the single player experience is great too and everything transfers over to online), I mean it probably has the best online integration ever.
First of all, the online transition is completely seamless, no bg menus or loading screens just a few presses of the D-pad and you're roaming through paradise City with your friends, from there you can just pal around or you can help each other locate billboards or stunt jumps. That sort of seamlessness is something GTA's free roam mode should strive to achieve.

Next, are the HUNDREDS of events and challenges you can bring up online and just like the online transition these are also completely seamless, the host can start races and other events or challenges for the whole party to work together to achieve like the entire jumping a ramp all at the same time and crashing into each other and it all flows beautifully.

Criterion(great developer, currently working on the NFS Hot Pursuit series) has also been pretty ace towards their community, tons of free DLC including adding motorcycles for free as well as other cars and even a fucking weather system and the only paid dlc are new modes and a cheaply priced whole new fucking island to explore.
Suffice to say I can't wait for a sequel.

I think the OP said $60 games. The idea, I believe, is basically to acknowledge games that were the absolute most game that they could be because the developers poured their heart into it. Instead of something that was ready to go on the shelf and make money / passable.

edit;

Some good picks in this thread. Burnout Paradise is definitely a superb example of what I just mentioned above. I wish I would have mentioned it in my post. I've just never been big on racing games though.

Dragon's Dogma looks like a good mention too, just judging by what I've seen/heard/touched of the game. I haven't been able to play the full game yet though, so I can't say first hand.

Came to post this.
Regardless of whether you liked the game or not (i did) or whether you think it felt like a proper 3d Castlevania or not (not sure about that) that's one of the few games you can tell devs cared about and enjoyed working on, often going that extra mile.

One of the few cases where you can tell the game was not just a contract with a publisher and devs actually had fun putting a lot of (mostly) good ideas on screen.
