My favorite game ever made is Ocarins of Time, but I would not say is the best game ever made (I wouldn't even say that it is better than either Wind Waker or Skyward Sword).
Plus I'm quite torn between PC games of great ambition like Fallout and Deux Ex or Nintendo games with masterful execution like Mario Galaxy. But I think I'll be happy with saying that Super Mario Galaxy 2 is so far the best game ever made, but purely because of mechanics. So tomorrow I might have a different opinion. |

This is gonna be a crazy thread, everyone has different favorite games of course.
Mine is Ys: The Oath in Felghana ![]() Falcom took the worst game in their famous Ys series, did a complete remake of it turning it from a 2D action-adventure platformer into a 3D action-adventure-platformer to more closely match the rest of the series, and it became perfect - there is literally no way I can think of to improve the game. It feels just fun to run around, jump and attack things, and the bosses can be brutal but are doable. And it's got some of the best game music, ever. |

It is a complete toss up between Half Life 2 (including all episodes) and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.
![]() Both are about as close to perfect as single player games get, both have near flawless pacing, both have great voice acting and character development, both are visually stunning and artistically brilliant, and both have incredibly smooth gameplay that is a blast to play. After my first playthrough in both games, the FIRST thing I did was restart a new campaign (which only a handful of games have compelled me to do). |

Final Fantasy IX
![]() What was once just my favorite JRPG has pretty much grown into my favorite game of all time. Just everything about it was magical to me the first time I played it over 10 years ago. When I replayed it a few years ago, it cemented itself as my favorite game. It's really the only game in the series where "Fantasy" is the first thing that comes to mind whenever I think about it. Just so much about it I loved. The charming character designs, the amazing art direction, the memorable soundtrack, the unique and varied world, the genuine romance, the likable cast of major and supporting characters (for the most part), the upbeat and likable protagonist, and the interesting storyline. There were some really moving and shocking moments in the game that I'll remember for a long long time. I don't think it's necessarily a perfect game and people will argue about the loading times or the asspull of the final boss, but to me it's a game that's extremely memorable for me and very few RPGs or games have come close to affecting me so much. |

Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines
As someone who places RPGs above all others can't really think of any game that has managed to top that game for me. The Witchers came close number two especially, but didn't quite make it. To be honest until recently I didn't think that any RPG ever will as they just don't make them like that anymore. With all these kickstaters of old school style rpgs now there is hope for new challengers in the future. |

Zelda: A Link to the Past is probably my first pick, the game was outstanding. I could listen to the soundtrack all day and it's complex design combined with simple mechanics is something that should be inspiring developers to this day. It's about as close to a 'perfect' game that I can imagine - timeless visuals, sounds, music - not too long, not too short, replayable with plenty of secrets.
If I were to choose another game it would likely be Halo: Combat Evolved. I've seen plenty of people (even on this forum) tear apart the game/series and imply that it is inferior to FPS entries on the PC. As someone who spent hundreds of hours on the Quakes, Unreals, Duke Nukem, Blood, Shadow Warrior, Half Life's etc. Nothing came close in either the Single Player or Multiplayer aspects - at least for me. Slayer and Local Co-op kept me hooked for literally years and I don't think I have replayed a game as much. On top of that, I don't recall anything making me laugh as hard with friends etc. Stupid amounts of fun even when just fucking around doing silly stuff. If I had to pick something that stood out as a 'greatest game of all time' that came out recently - I'd have a terribly difficult time choosing between Bayonetta, Witcher 2:EE or Dark Souls. Bayonetta is about as pure as it gets in terms of fun, but possibly suffers due to a couple of areas that simply aren't that fun to replay (motorbike level etc). Outside of that, just amazing all round. Dark Souls is mind-blowing from a design perspective, simply putting the responsibility of understanding the mechanics, stats, smithing etc. entirely on the player to study and leaving it at that. The fact that you can literally take a wrong turn and have your face smashed in is a total love/hate relationship that I have/had with the game. It makes the game incredibly atmospheric and tense, and in turn, undeniably rewarding. By the same token, it can be frustrating particularly when mechanics and the correct path become a little hazy. I am helping a friend through at the moment and I can certainly see his frustration hit boiling point as he takes the slowly and cautiously yet gets torn apart because he accidentally opened a door that contained a Knight he couldn't possibly hope to fight with his current gear/stats (Havel). Stupidly addictive and among the greatest games of all time despite its issues, simply because every other game insists on holding your hand or making the obvious path far too obvious. Witcher 2 is probably the choice I'd make overall. I played it on 360 and it is just genuinely amazing. Graphics, music, dialogue etc. are all top notch. Combat system is great, story and atmosphere are amazing. It just absorbed me start to finish. A good example of how good the story/characters were - a friend of mine completed the game on the Iorveth path and made a few notable decisions in the first Act that I was going to do the opposite with, simply to see the results. By the time I reached the end of the Act I had to go down the Iorveth path simply because it felt right and that's what I wanted to see play out. I am currently watching my wife play through it, and I suggested she play through the Roche path so she doesn't have to re-watch some of the cutscenes etc. she witnessed. And when it came time to choose, she wanted to go the Iorveth path again. There's very few issues with the game and it's only slightly less replayable than the previous two games I mentioned. |

RPG gems, both of them :) Another great choice. Torment is my favorite non-Fallout RPG. If only the combat were even slightly fun I'd probably rank it the same as the Fallout games. It's probably one of the most emotionally rewarding games of all times.

I really really need to get around to playing this game. It always pops up in threads like this as one of the best RPGs ever and for some reason I have yet to play it. A quick check tells me GoG has it I think I will have to pick it up after i am done playing the Quest for Glory series i just bought off of there.

I'm so conflicted on this. I'd probably say the greatest is Tetris Gameboy but Super Mario World comes so close. I can't really fault Tetris at all. It's a genius video game concept and Super Mario World is a masterclass in 2D platformers and video game design in general.
And then my favourite is Pokemon Red. This was all I ever played as a kid. I still play it annually and I feel like none of the sequels have *quite* lived up to the potential of this. Honorable Mentions: Galaxy games, Advance Wars (any), Portal, Minecraft (PC) and Animal Crossing (Gamecube). |

I'd say Jak 3. I love the variety in the gameplay. The platforming is excellent. As are all the various driving missions from the buggies to the hoverboard stuff. All the weapons and powers make combat fun and interesting. The graphics are amazing. The story has a great sense of humor and wraps up the trilogy rather nicely with some reveals they had been working to for years.

Man, I think I'm the only one on the planet who thought those sections were fun. I mean, definitely not as fun as the real combat - nowhere close - and I wouldn't disagree to trimming them down a bit, but yeah. I always had fun playing through them, and I've replayed the game about five times lol. |

I'm with you. Favourite RPG ever.
I can never choose just one, though. I know that's a copout, but it's too tough. Fallout is there, plus: GTA: Vice City Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines Metal Gear Solid Red Dead Redemption Max Payne

I have played and finished over 300 games, half of them RPGs (all systems, all eras from 8-bit to DX11 rigs).
For me the best overall game and best RPG EVER is Deus Ex: ![]() No game since DX gave me such freedom of choice. The only game that did before was Ultima 7: The Black Gate. Deus Ex is what I thought all games post DX-era would be like. To say I was cheated is... underselling it. Deus Ex has no cons. No negatives. No flaws. A game like Deus Ex happens once per lifetime of its creators. |

I am sure its a odd choice to a lot of people but of all the landmark titles I have played in my life few have stayed with me in such clarity as the KF series and specifically Kings Field 2. The foreboding atmosphere and desperation that the first game introduced continues in the sequel(Technically the 3rd game). The world is unforgiving and bleak. Every encounter you have whether a lowly plant to a towering boss can be the end of you. The NPCs have learned to accept this bleak reality expecting nothing better than for their children to outlive them. Every small quest you do changes everything for them. The game is a test in patience and skill. As powerful as you become death is always near. Kings Fields brilliance will always be in the details for me. I remember there is a small village where there are these Ice Golems always attacking. Upon clearing most from the immediate vicinity of the town you are rewarded with the few survivors selling you rare goods. There is one particular old man in the town that tells of the deep sadness in his heart of losing his wife to one of the Ice Golems. He tells you though that he is about to gain a son in law so at least some happiness is still possible in the world. On the day of the wedding neither the groom or bride are anywhere to be found. A quest starts with the old man imploring you to find his daughter who was missing. He tells me that she disappeared on the morning of her wedding to find her fiancee and never returned. You spend hours looking for her in this frost bitten land where she was last scene. You come to a cave and on descending find letters scratched into the walls by her beseeching her love to return. These pleas grow more and more desperate the farther into the cave you go until...you come upon a large open room with her laying on a table made of ice. As you approach the table a giant ice golem comes crashing down on you. Its one of the hardest fights in the game. Circling around him and darting away you finally deliver the finishing blow. As he falls he turns his body to the women on the table stretching his arms out to her. You find a note on her written from her fiancee explaining that he has been cursed for years and always thought they were only dreams until he woke and found the pendant of his wifes mother in his hand covered in blood. It was then that he knew he was a Ice Golem and could never atone for the pain he had caused her family. You then find one last scratched note in the wall from the bride saying that she has tracked him to her home. She knows she has found him and she will wait for her true love to return, that she knows he must be coming back...but its sooo cold. Realizing what had played out rocked my whole world and it was something most people probably missed. It wasn't a main quest or even one that resulted in any great treasure but it was there to be found. That more than anything is what makes me love Kings Field, the true thrill of discovering something. Of wondering what is just around the next corner. ![]() My close second. It felt wrong not putting it in a post in a thread with the title Greatest Game.... |

Sorry guys, can't borrow it down to just one, as others have said, it changed all the time, but it would be out of my top 5.
LoZ:OoT Final Fantasy 7 Oddworld: Strangers Wrath Super Mario 64 Uncharted 2 Bah! Forgot Metroid Prime, Resi 4 and Portal 2. This task is impossible. Top 10 is hard enough...

Phantasy Star 1 to me is still the best game I ever played and still is to this day. I remember doing a 24 hour 1st day on this game...the only game I have ever done this with. My only breaks was to eat, restroom and took 20min to run to a store to get graph paper to map out the dungeons.
I hopelessly pray for a remake that I know will never come, but still the best game to date for me! |

Too hard for me to say that there is ONE game to rule them all. Some worthy candidates:
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past This is basically the pinnacle of the series. The ones before it provided the framework that culminated here, the ones after it just aped this game / provided 3d versions of the same thing. Super Metroid Same thing as Link to the Past, this is the pinnacle of the series. Ninja Gaiden BLACK A masterpiece, most enjoyable combat system ever. Sometimes I wish I could "unplay" it so I would not feel disappointed with the current crop of games in the genre. @*&# Platinum and Bayonetta, I own a PS3, keep your trash! Demon's Souls Wow! My current game of the generation. Dat level design! Such an excellent title. I know if Dark Souls had been given the proper time, it would have been on par, but it was not to be. @*&# Namco! Cod 4 MW / MW2 I weep by the dismantling of Infinity Ward. I was very happy with my 2 year CoD MW cycle. I hope my boys (West and Zampella) are able to pwn Activision, and that their creative visions can be realized with their future Respawn game. Might they be able to "win" the rights to the "Modern Warfare" IP? |

I'm going to have to go revisit it, but I don't remember especially enjoying COD4. I'd say Ep 2, TF2, Bulletstorm were much more enjoyable for me. Saying best FPS this gen is pretty big.
