Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time Preview #1

Quote:
Structurally, the game is made up of a series of 'hubs' and 'spokes'. The latter are strictly linear, action-heavy sections, the former, as you will guess, more open to exploration. Indeed, Sanzaru insists there's "gigantic replay value to the hubs", with lots of "aha" moments where a new ability suddenly opens up a previously inaccessible section. All levels are freely playable with any unlocked outfit once completed.

The team is only showing two new playable sections at this stage, one set in feudal Japan, the other in a circus, where The Amazing Cooperoni's Robin Hood garb comes with a bow and arrow, required to create tightropes to walk along.

For a game targeted at kids, Thieves In Time's gameplay requires a decent degree of dexterity and careful timing to weave carefully through stealth and action sections. It also looks absolutely gorgeous in motion, with fluid animations and a silky-smooth frame-rate that does the series proud on its new platform.
Quote:
Anyway, Sly's return may be a slight one in the excitement stakes, but it looks lovingly made on the evidence so far with bulging, soon-to-be-picked pockets of character and charm. This time, Sanzaru may at last be able to pin up fan mail truly of its own.

Do did I hear right that it's full cross compatible as in I can play on the PS3, pickup my Vita and continue where I left off and vice versa? If so AWESOME!

I hope they do some double pack deal.

You are correct.

Game sounds awesome so far. Animations look great too.

Unless you can end up with both in one purchase, this is going to start a trend where I have to decide between the console version or the handheld version of a PS3 game. Hmm.

Aside from the voices, that actually looks really interesting.

Other things Ive noticed: when the player jumps on those trumpets, is he controlling the camera or is it auto-controlled? Seems to be less than ideal in those couple of moments.

Visuals are nice, objectives too. Reminds me of simpler PS1 style platform games like Crash Bandicoot, Medievil, Pandemonium etc in a good way.

I imagine it'll be a similar fare to MLB 12 where if you got the two in the same transaction you saved $20.

In an ideal world you'd get both for the price of the PS3 version if you bought digitally since you then can't sell it on but that's not shown any signs of happening on larger titles yet.

I can't wait for titles like this on Vita. This and Ratchet and Clank Collection and Jak Trilogy on Vita would make my day.

This really does look great.
I dont have a PS3, I am really looking forward to picking this up for my Vita though.
Vita is turning out to be a great success to someone like me who hasnt been a Sony gamer before, lots of things I would never have gotten the chance to play, and now they are all coming to me in beautiful OLED portability!
I honestly cant gush enough about how much I love my Vita!
Bring on E3 and even more goodness!

Hi there,

Glad to hear you picked up the collection! Thieves in Time takes the best parts of all the previous games in the series and really builds on them for the new hardware. We take the hub and spoke structure of 2 and 3, but then we have greatly expanded the size and scope, with more collectibles, bigger hideouts with tons of new features. We then also brought the kind of layered boss battle gameplay you experienced in the first game and made them even more epic as Sly Cooper on the PlayStation 3 would deserve. From there we also bring in a whole host of new characters: Sly’s ancestors, each with their own abilities and quirky Cooper persona :D
So again there are cool things that you will recognize and love and lots and lots of new stuff to keep you on your toes.
Cheers,

Glen

Sounds like they are aiming to combine Sly 1 style levels that are linear and focus on stealth and platforming, in addition to Sly 2 style hub worlds and missions.

I love that Vita gameplay video. The Sanzaru guy sounds so excited by it all.

Anyway yeah, i was intending to buy it on PS3, but it's definitely one for Vita now.

For these PS3 / Vita games would be cool to follow the Motorstorm RC way : buy 1 version (retail or digital) and get a code to download the other one.

Looks great. Very excited. Though I hope the hubs aren't as big and draining as in Sly 2 and 3. I loved the linearity of the first game. Nothin' but platforming (And shitty minigames).

EDIT: The devs seem quite passionate about the game too.

EDIT 2: I don't like the VA. Sly comes across like an ass.

This is literally the only PS3 game I've had to look forward to in the past 2, maybe 3 years. Unless The Last Guardian stops being vaporware.

As someone who isnt following this game, I feel like it's been in some sort of development limbo forever. At least since the announcement.

At one point I thought it had already come out..

How did you manage to look forward to it 3 years ago when it was only announced a year ago?

I've been playing Sly 2 for the first time recently and honestly scouring the hubs for the hint bottles are the only enjoyment I'm having.
Its a bummer because I loved Sly 1. Thieves in Time looks up my alley though. Love the way the hub/spoke system sounds
