Time to get a 3DS? #1

I knew I would eventually want a 3DS, but I'm not sure if I should wait or not. I purposely avoided getting a launch 3DS due to launch issues that often plague new systems - one of which I heard about the 3DS was the scratching issues it had. Does the 3DS still have those issues? With E3 around the corner, should I wait for any new announcements regarding new iterations or potential price cuts?

Anyway, I believe the scratching issue has been fixed for later models.

It's getting a great library, already has some awesome games. However, E3 is so close, I would at least wait for that. If it doesn't have a revision, then just get it, but I'm not a big fan of the hardware, so I revision would be welcome.

Yes? Why is this even a question?

A friend bought an XBOX 360 2 weeks before last year's E3 and we know what happened there.

That's good to hear. I just want to make sure I avoid getting the later model in any store I happen to purchase it from.

To the op, wait until E3, and if Nintendo doesn't announce a revision, get a 3DS. Great system.

The correct answer is:

Is there a Castlevania game released for it?

If yes: Buy it. If not: wait until Castlevania.

I bought mine last November and I have not had any of this screen scratching stuff, perhaps it hasn't been fixed but I've not ran into this problem myself.

Nope. I have a red 3DS and I still get those awful lines on the top screen. Good thing I have a screen protector.

Yeah, I'll just wait until E3. I suppose I was going to anyway, but if the scratch issue had been fixed then I didn't care too much about a redesign but E3 is a little too close for me to just get one now, I suppose.

It's about time I get a new handheld system and officially replace my DS. I think I'll even get some more DS games with the system as well (along with 3DS games).

Only if you send it in for repair they "check" everything on the system. It has alot of flaws tho but the system is good.

I've only heard one person say that about the Midnight Purple 3DS, but has anyone actually made measurements?

I received a Mario 3D Land bundle for Christmas and it's absolutely making those marks on the side. I'm afraid it's going to scratch the system without a screen protector. >.<;

But yeah, with E3 so close, just wait. You never know what Nintendo will announce.

What's the scratch issue I keep hearing about?

I was planning on getting my 3DS whenever FE: Awakening is released here in the US. I'm hoping there's a revision announced by then.

The frame around the bottom screen protrudes up, which can touch the top screen. It creates smudges and for some people, this can lead to permanent scratching as well.

No it hasn't. I even read a report here somewhere of some guy's Club Nintendo Limited Edition 3DS leaving marks. Unsure about purple though.

I don't see a revision this year (loss making current version, and needing to really focus on other products and the 3DS itself). But wait for E3 I think.

They are still losing money on each 3DS sold, so there will most definitely not be a price drop anytime soon. If I remember correctly, Iwata said that they would start making money around September.

I can't really see them making a revision soon either. They can't make a smaller one, because the current model is about as small as it can get; so, they would have to make a bigger one.

A potential 3DS XL would most likely cost even more than the current model to make, which means it would probably have to cost $199 at least, and we already know how well the 3DS sold at a higher price.

I don't think that a 3DS XL will be released before Q3 2013.

Most likely it'll get slightly bigger yeah. I expect it'll all be about the battery, 3DS+.
Certainly if Nintendo go on a big marketing push for portable gaming that will last more than 5 minutes, they'll be able to make a bigger grab at some of the market currently happy with their phones.

Also, if they are adding a second slide pad, then they have to make it bigger. No one wants less battery time after all.

There's probably not going to be a revision. Nintendo needs the spot light to be completely on the wiiu this year. They're not going to crowd their market with two new systems at the same time.

Next 3ds will probably be announced a year or so from now

But e3 is in a week so just wait. I don't see why you even had to make a topic.

1 year 3 months + that people have been expecting a revision...

I'd hold on until E3 has passed and let that help you make a decision. Its a great system with some really good games. I pity people who haven't played 3D Land to completion or beaten RE: Revelations this year.

Yeah, forget about a revision until at least next year's E3.

It's a GREAT time to get a 3DS right now. There's plenty of awesome games to buy right now, and a lot of them are dirt cheap (buy pilotwings. I saw it for £9.99 the other day pre-owned, and it's still one of my favourite 3DS titles).

And if the rumours are true, you'll have a new Zelda game announced for it next week too.

Edit: Oh, and I don't know if you do live in the UK or not, but last week my girlfriend brought a 3DS for £80. No excuse at that price, even if it was some person on gumtree who probably didn't understand how cheaply they were selling it.
