I agree that it's fantastic, but Amadeus definitely is not a biopic.

Why? I would say it definitely is. One could argue that it's not a conventional one tho.

While not my favourite I do think American Splendor deserves a mention here (and The Straight Story if it qualifies).

Because it's pure fantasy. Biopics usually have at least some basis in reality. Amadeus is a phenomenal film, but it's almost entirely fiction.

Period drama? Yes. Biopic? No.

So you're saying Mozart didn't exist, he never lived around the time where the movie plays, all the music is made up, he wasn't a nutter etc? Of course the film is fictionalized and over the top but where do you draw the line? Some soviet era film about the life of Stalin is probably more fantasy then Amadeus.

That a biopic is fictionalized is part of it. They are not the same as docus or docu dramas.

Why? Just because it's not 100% accurate with history?

That a biopic is fictionalized is part of it. They are not the same as docus or docu dramas.
The crux of the entire film - that Salieri despised Mozart, renounced God, and led Mozart to an early grave - is a complete fabrication with little basis in reality.

If you were to ask Milos Forman or Peter Shaffer if the film were a biopic, they would almost certainly say no. Neither the film nor the play it was based on were designed as such.

It's a phenomenal film. But it's not a biopic. You might as well classify Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter as a biopic if you're going to count Amadeus as one.

I love Ed Wood! +1. Albeit there's probably also a lot of fiction involved.

That is ridiculously hyperbolic. A more apt comparison would have been Rudy.

Nice suggestions, thank you.

And as for 24hr Party People, one of my favorite movies. Funny how I forget it's a biopic. I love the jokes about Viny Reilly in too.
