As awesome as this cast is and as good as it looks, it's gonna have a hard time edging the one with Liam Neeson and Geoffrey Rush.

That movie was INCREDIBLE. Rush nailed his character.

It weird, doing movie musicals in recent years has been majorly hit and miss (chicago and nine with a few others). This has the look of one that could easily go and sweep every catagory when the Oscars come thought.

I can easily something going wrong with it. I don't want too, I like what I see and cant wait to see more

However major side note is that they showed Samantha barks, and she even looks good in the role.

I ashamed : I'm french and I never read that book. Hell, I don't even know the story.

By the looks of it, Crowe dies. He has the wrong costume at the wrong time period in french history :(

I'm wondering how spoilery to make this, given that it's a bit, well, old! Spoiler warning, but it's only an allusion to costuming and reasons:

I'm no expert on French military history, but I know the musical well; if the costume is wrong because it's *older* than the time period in question, there's a good reason for that. If it's too new, that's a problem, of course. Care to elaborate further on the issues?

Edit (less spoilery, but I'm correcting a mistake I made):
I was wrong about who was wearing what uniform at what point in the storyline; it'd be a police uniform you're alluding to, right?

They hadn't filmed any of the Thenardier scenes yet when this trailer was cut together, hence no shots of Baron Cohen or Bonham Carter in the trailer (and none of Aaron Tveit, who plays Enjolras, because no-one outside of the musical theatre world and people who saw Howl really have a clue who he is).

Amanda Seyfried is a name you can (to an extent) sell a film on. They don't need to sell this film to people who saw the O2 concert - they need to sell it to people who don't know who Sam Barks is, i.e. most of America.

Just rewatched the trailer.

So many feelings.

The subdued singing and more "sincerely" emotional take on it -- I can't.

Why is that? Aside from the fact that the Broadway play is well loved? Aside from that we've seen one trailer that shows no real acting. Lets wait to see how it all comes out before we start labeling it an oscar contender. There is a lot that could go horribly wrong.

Bleh. I never read the book or saw the musical. But I do hear about its praise all the time.

I just wish it was an adaptation of the book. I don't like musicals at all. Only one I ever enjoyed was Across the Universe, and it was all Beatles songs.

The musical is an adaptation of the book as well (and many people would argue the best adaptation).

Anne Hathaway is radical casting for Fantine. Would never have seen it coming, but color me impressed. I Dreamed a Dream is meant to be belted to the rafters in a theater on Broadway, where the swells and lingering notes wrap around the audience and bounce off the columns and spill out into the lobby. But the style she's singing in could be really perfect for a film.

Yeah, my thoughts were exactly this. I was really impressed by how she sounded, focusing more on presenting the song emotionally, rather than belting it out. Hype definitely increased, and glad to see Colm Wilkinson included as well. I'll be interested to see how well Baron-Cohen carries off Thenardier. Not enthused by Bonham Carter, but at least it's a small role.

I have no doubt that Anne Hathaway could belt this to the rafters (note we haven't heard large chunks of the song yet), but I really think this interpretation is perfect for a film. Fantine has no reason to absolutely blow the roof off when she sings I Dreamed A Dream - she's sold all her hair and become a prostitute, and so she's completely devastated and at her lowest ebb.

It'll be interesting to see the whole song in context - the cheesiest thing to do would be to show soft-focus flashbacks to Cosette's father, but I hope they'll avoid that.

I didn't expect this film adaption to be a musical. After seeing the Broadway show in February, discovering this will be a musical is a highlight of my day. I'll see this day one. Hype is through the roof now.

Haha, they'd probably kill the people in the first three rows otherwise.

As mentioned earlier, I'm also pretty sure Crowe can't sing. Javert isn't too demanding, especially compared to Valjean, but still. Maybe they cut "Stars"? :/

Also, holy shit I did not expect this to look this gorgeous. The King's Speech is as flat as a board, visually.

Well, if Gerard Butler can sing the Phantom, then Crowe can probably handle Javert. They'll no doubt smooth things over in the studio.

Oh no I agree on the Badass Gavroche moment, I also love his [gavroche] other bigger moment that happens in ACT 2.

However, lets be honest the Confrontation between Jackman and Crowe will be freaking incredible.

I think this trailer is better than the Great Gatsby by a long shot as well.

The movie was mediocre. The best parts were Neeson and Rush. They both killed it in their roles, especially Rush. But the rest of the movie was just mediocre at best. And judging by how few people saw it, I think it is already forgotten.

Besides, most people know the musical first, so I see the new film doing rather well. Unless it has some horrific reviews.
