HeroClix |OT| Batman vs. Ironman vs. Gandalf? DOTA2 this summer! #1

You saw Avengers and wanted more. You already have your tickets for the opening showing of Dark Knight Rises in three different countries. You've read every issue of Nextwave and understood all the jokes. You engage in arguments on internet forums about the Hulk's cheapness. You dismiss the derisive jeers of the opposite sex and the cool kids.

Have I got a game for you!

What is it?

HeroClix is a strategic grid-based tabletop game by Wizkids which features pre-painted plastic miniatures of famous comic book (and videogame/fantasy) heroes and villains. Your goal is to score as many points as possible by KO-ing your opponents figures.

It's essentially chess with superpowers.

Rules
Core Rulebook 2011
Powers and Abilities Card

The Figures

Each figure (or click) is a representation of some character. They all have different combinations of standard super-powers (like Super Strength) and different number values to represent their proficiency at certain types of fighting. The numbers represent: movement, attack, defense, and damage (the lightning bolt gives range).

Every figure is attached to a dial which has a window which shows only one set of numbers at a time. When your figure takes damage from an enemy attack, you turn the click and your powers and combat values change.

Why Should I Play?

HeroClix is a great game for beginners and features a rewarding learning curve. There is also a large vibrant community of gamers, meaning that it is never too difficult to find an opponent.

HeroClix combines the best features of nerdy "who would win" battles by allowing you to find out first hand.

HeroClix allows you to mix and match universes for never-bever-seen "what-if" battle royales. Ever wanted to team-up Dr. Doom and Sauron (of the one ring fame) to see how they fare against Superman and Cosmic Spider-man?

Where can I buy these?

HeroClix is available at your local gaming hobby store or comic book store. They are also available online at major gaming websites (Amazon usually does not have the best deals).

HeroClix Online

Heroclix Online is a computer game which allows you to play games against people online and is a great way to learn the rules or practice. It uses a separate virtual figure collection which costs clixbux via microtransactions. The best way to get into the game is to spend the 4 bucks or so to get the game plus a starter, then buy a new physical Fast Forces Pack (6 pack) that comes with a redemption code for those figures.

Heroclix Online Usernames (will add more if people post them):

Physical Products that include Redemption Codes:

Incredible Hulk Fast Forces: Hulk, She-Hulk, Abomination, The Leader, General Thunderbolt Ross, Hulkbuster Wrangler

You can get a starter set with 6 figures, a map, and rules for pretty cheap online. That's what I did last summer and now I have over 300 figures.

Unless you live in the middle of nowhere there is probably a group already there. The game's never been more popular. I believe it's third behind mtg and Pokemon.

Not gonna waste more money on plastic trinkets though. 30 years and then some of nerdery has given me a life time supply of junk. haha

There are a lot of Batmen because he's so popular, but all the different figures represent different interpretations of his character from different arcs. There's even a Sinestro Corp Batman.

You'd be happy to know that there is a computer version called Heroclix Online. Lots of figure packs come with codes now for virtual figures.

might pick some up.

I use the supers clicks for my tabletop Mutants & Masterminds RPG. The player base for the full Heroclix game I found skewed too young near me. Game looked cool though.

Wizkids was originally owned by Topps and were bought out by NECA after a hiatus. Heroclix is celebrating it's 10th anniversary this year with two special sets as well as two OP events: one Marvel and one DC. The Marvel one was Infinity Gauntlet which for the first month gave you the gauntlet and then every month for participation prizes you received one of the gems. The main prizes for each monthly tournament were the Elders of the Universe from Thanos Quest with the main prize being a colossal sized Thanos at the end. DC's event for this year is No Man's Land which will feature Batman villains as the prizes and Batman's utility belt and upgrades as the participation prizes.

As for being able to use old figures, most places run what are called Silver Age events which allow you to use any figures but no cardboard elements (which aren't made anymore). There is yearly set retirement though which affects the Convention tournament scene.

A few years ago I bought two DC Booster packs that were on a discount expecting to learn to play the game with a few friends, but nothing aroused from it. So, my question is: should I get a starter pack and begin from there, or can I use the packs that I already bought and learn along a manual or some tutorials on the internet?

I love Heroclix! I have a great collection of the figures, including some of the larger pieces such as Phoenix and Sinestro in his fear construct. I really enjoyed the collecting part of Heroclix. I'd love to put them to some use though. Unfortunately I don't have anyone to play with. I did have a few games with my younger brothers over Christmas, but we didn't have a good understanding of the rules and it didn't work out.

Can the online games be played using the older Heroclix figures? I have a lot from as far back as the original series, both Marvel and DC.

To be honest, some stuff happened in-between (vacations, parties, work, etc) so I left the boosters stored in a drawer and forgot about them for a while.

By the way, this figure looks fucking great.

There are some older figures in Heroclix Online, but essentially the real game and virtual game are separate when it comes to collections. The exception is the new 6 packs and some single boosters that come with redemption codes. I've never bought a physical figure. Also if somebody joins HC Online, I've got some redemption codes from the latest Movie Avengers set that I'd be happy to share.

Also my HC Online name is: Affeinvasion if you want to add me.

I will add it to the OP.

This is the unfortunate truth about FLGSs, but if you can bring a friend or two, it automatically makes it better. Also you may find out that some of the people you thought were "untouchables" are actually pretty cool. Kids always suck though, unless they're the quiet Harry Potter types.

Oh I'm also going to add links to the rules in case people with older figs want to see how the game has changed since the hiatus.

They're very, very different but also based on the same basic game design. The major difference (I'm not really an expert on Mage Knight) is that Heroclix uses a grid based system for line of fire, adjacency, etc. whereas Mage Knight uses a Warhammer type free system which requires tape measures and stuff. There's obviously a lot of other differences as well, but I think the grid based system leads to tighter gameplay while obviously limiting some of the "freedom" that a gridless system provides.

It would but since Wizkids is owned by NECA they can only use the properties that NECA has the licenses for. I know there is also a Bioshock set coming out, but most importantly NECA owns the rights to Valve.

This seems... actually kind of cool. I never really knew what HeroClix were but didn't realize it was a deep chess-like strategy game. It sounds like Hero Academy with more unit variety and no fixed teams.

Too bad my wife would divorce me if I started bringing home these plastic characters and playing in the back room of the local comic store.

That's what I thought too, but it turns out my wife loves me. :P

You could try heroclix online...it's a little janky, but it's a good introduction into the game, and the virtual starter sets are pretty cheap.

I wouldn't call it deep. One of the simpler versions of clix games to come out in the past years, but it found a niche with the comic book fans that kept it going where the other complex and deep clix games couldn't keep up with.

There was a baseball one way back in the day. But I'm pretty sure the whole "clix" thing is a wizkids patent. Mage Knight used clix bases too, but was like a more traditional Warhammer experience.

I wouldn't discount the depth of heroclix as it currently is. With special (unique) powers added to the game, along with a huge variety of different figures and playstyles, the game is much, much different from when it first came out.

This game is incredibly deep. Team building is as difficult, if not more so, then building a MTG deck.

My 10th anniversary CTD won't be delivered till tomorrow. Grrrr. The set came out yesterday. Reading about it online and on Facebook is torture. It's like watching everybody else experience Christmas 2 days earlier than you. Your presents are under the tree, you just can't open them.

Also, I've been playing for 10 years. This game is super expensive. If you lack a disposable income don't even attempt it. This game just keeps getting more and more popular. Everytime I think it's peaked, more new players show up. It's like a deeper FF:Tactics with characters and properties you actually care about. Where else would you find what is essentially a mini statue of KGBeast or Space Phantom? Exactly.

Crazy bump...

I got my Marvel 10th Anniversary yesterday (not a DC fan). The sculpts look great, the paint jobs are not as great, but I pulled Magneto in an egg, Storm, Dark Phoenix, and Skrull Wolverine.

Playing for Thanos tomorrow. We were waiting for 10th anniversary to come out so we could do a sealed tournament.

Also the hobby is less expensive when you can go to GenCon and win Con Exclusives to sell.

Not sure how much I'll check back at this topic though, HCrealms is really the best place for clix discussion.

Haha yes, the perfect paragraph to describe the game. It is VERY expensive to keep relevant ($100+ every 4 months), and I would also use FFT to describe the gameplay.

Dark Phoenix is the best figure on the collection, congratulations on that. Othen than that, I'm only really after Emma Frost, Skrull Spiderman and maybe Worldbreaker.

Also the game can be pretty reasonably priced if you just play sealed and buy singles here and there.
