I'll probably buy it, but I really wish they'd push the franchise a bit. Barely any evolution from GoW1.
I'd be among the first to accuse the GOW series of being too conservative in its changes from iteration to iteration, but this seems downright crazy.

There are numerous subtle differences observable in the combat already, just compared to GOW3. Maybe the differences between iterations are really only noticeable if you are really familiar with the series. I can see how a more casual fan of the franchise would not perceive the changes as substantial or meaningful.

i'm just really excited i finally get to bash enemies with my bare hands like hercules, hadn't even thought of that possibility :D

also i'm really eager to see what the setting(s) are, since its a prequel and all the gods (and titans) are alive, it opens up more options for interaction with them and environments that represent them, like finally Atlantis maybe?

takes place soon after he kills his family i think. and of course its the same character design, its an iconic design why would they change it? if you're talking about new outfits well they already had that in GoW3 and there's word that there will be flashback segments in this game of his days leading the spartan army.

I suppose there are is only a finite number of creatures/gods in Greek mythology. It's either rehash or take inspirations from wider afield.

I think it goes like this:

Ascension
Chains of Olympus
God of War
Ghost of Sparta
God of War II
God of War III

If you're talking about these games in terms of their release dates, Ascension will be the third prequel released for this series.

His body shape is clearly different. If you're complaining about him still being white with red tattoos, well, why would they change that? Samus is orange (or blue), Master Chief is green, Mario is in red and blue. Who changes the fundamentals of their character?

That said, I hope they include some interesting outfits, and I hope they give the option to wear costumes without the changes to your stats.

I just finished Ghosts of Sparta myself a few days ago, I really liked it, I was playing the HD ver from the Origins collection, but I was really surprised at how large the game felt for being a PSP game. I liked the new fire mechanic they added to the weapons and found the alternate weapon they added to the game was really fun to use.

The new bare fist combo looks like it replaced Hyperion Fury where you just hold square in gow3, Also think the cracken thing is alot bigger then they are letting on "remember poseidon" and can't wait to see what changes it the final release.

Loving the new look of Kratos but please have a simple Spartan spear and shield that would be badass. And some of the new multiplayer outfits are looking great :D really wasn't feeling the poseidon themed ones at the reveal.

Edit: Ps blog update

Here's another Multiplayer video, just cam gameplay but you can get a sense of the flow, some of the different things you can do, etc.

There's also this one, where this guy kinda sorta tries to explain what's going on, you get the general idea.

Gotta say, I'm really warming up the MP. Visually, it looks incredible, but the biggest thing is I think they've done a very good job at transitioning the GoW formula into a competitive environment. It's got all your big set pieces, breaking chests, vicious-looking combat. They've also added plenty of depth, in the forms of new sub-weapons, magic, traps, objectives, etc. I'm not sure if I'm gonna wanna watch that big cutscene every single time I play that map, but besides that, it's lookin' good.

Edit: I also really like this World Weapon system they've added. Sub-Weapons have always been a tricky thing in the GoW series. They are either big heavy things you'd use 10% of the time when you don't wanna use the blades, or they're some kind of variant of the chains. Now, you can pick up weapons you find on the stage, like an ol' school beat 'em up, and combine it with your regular blade moves, for the O button. I imagine if you don't have a weapon, the O button is all that melee stuff Kratos was doing.

New details:

Quote:
-Sony wouldn’t give us many details about the game’s story, but we know that God of War: Ascension takes place before God of War 1. Kratos is still enslaved to Ares, but he is desperately seeking a way to break free from this bond.

-A group of Furies-female chthonic deities of vengeance will be the game’s main antagonists.

-A combat mechanic called tethering will allow players to grab enemies with Kratos’ blades of chaos. Kratos will be able to drag these enemies around the environment while fighting other foes or throw tethered enemies into environmental objects.

-Kratos will now be able to pick up weapons scattered around the environment or stuck into fallen foes and then use them in combat. So far Sony has shown off swords, javelins, and clubs, but there will likely be many more objects that will allow Kratos to dismember his enemies. Players will only be able to pick up one world weapon at a time, but they will be common enough that players can replace them readily if, for example, they lose a weapon by throwing at a foe.

-Kratos acquires a new power called the Life Cycle, which allows him to rewind objects within the environment. This is an isolated event, locked to specific areas in the environment, but Kratos will be able to use it to rewind or pause falling objects in order to clamber over them. Kratos will also be able to use this Life Cycle power during combat, knocking enemies into the air and causing them to fall slowly back to the ground.

-God of War: Ascension features a simplified UI. Many quick time events have been simplified so that players will be able to instinctively react to interactive mini-game like events. A giant circle button no longer spins over enemies heads. Instead, when enemies are weakened they will shimmer with a golden halo and Kratos will be able to take them out with a brutal takedown attack. Once a red halo appears over an enemy they are nearly dead.

Who thinks they'll pull a MGS2 and change Kratos' looks considerably after the first chapter? This is Kratos' story before he became a god, became grey and has superhuman powers. I think that part was the opening one then we'll see a younger Kratos. The first ever shots of the MP, I thought it was Kratos' new design but it wasn't.

In any case, I am very glad they didn't call this 4. IMO, all of the main GoW games were amazing. Me thinks GoW4 is brewing for face melting on PS4. I welcome the wait with this one. After all, this one will release next year and I don't think 4 will be ready the year after, so it is a nice filler till then.

I saw the demo player do the Square, Hold Square attack a bunch of times in the demo. That was enough to turn me off. I don't want to be doing the exact same combos again, seven years and five games later.

EDIT - After seeing that video I take it back, those are some cool additions. Still don't know if I'm interested, but it's really nice to see some innovation in the series.
