When a student who won a scholarship for African-American students walked to the stage at a Riverside, Calif., high school to pick up his award, the audience laughed nervously. Cumulative. And college in the states is fucking expensive. Unless you are a top 10% then you will have to take out loans to send your kid to college. Any assistance they can get helps.

They're usually cumulative. Unless they're linked or exceed the tuition, the scholarships are distinct from each other.

I give money to a scholarship to fund first time college attendees or people from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to go to school.

Basically the burden of proof is you show that no one else in your family has gone to school, or income verification.

One year, they accidentally gave the scholarship to someone who was the child of engineers. The group I give to administers other scholarships as well, so mistakes happen.

But unlike this situation, they were total dicks about giving the money back.

They're cumulative. Keep in mind that scholarships can be very small. In this case it was only $1000. I've seen scholarships that are only in the hundreds. You could barely cover one year of textbooks with that.

I don't know why people are trying to spin this into a sour story. He applied for a minority scholarship, won it because the awardees didn't discriminate, and then returned it because he didn't need it. No muss, no fuss.
