White High Schooler Returns Scholarship Intended for Black Students #1

Quote:
When a student who won a scholarship for African-American students walked to the stage at a Riverside, Calif., high school to pick up his award, the audience laughed nervously. The student, Jeffrey Warren, was white.

Warren, 17, a recent graduate of Riverside's King High School, won a $1,000 scholarship sponsored by Riverside's Martin Luther King Senior Citizens Club. While a cover letter to guidance counselors indicated that the award was intended only for black students, the application merely "encourage[d] African-American students to apply," according to King High School Principal Darel Hansen.

The morning after the ceremony, Warren returned the money. Since then, his story has made national headlines.

Warren's father Rod, a language arts teacher at King High School, said he told his son to apply for every scholarship for which he might be eligible. Since the application did not explicitly rule out non-black applicants, the soon-to-be San Diego State freshman gave it a shot. Out of the 27 scholarships for which he applied, he won four, including the one he later gave up.

"The laughter was slight at the beginning, then it got louder," Rod Warren said. "You could tell the [award presenters] were surprised, but they shook his hand and gave it to him."

When the Warrens returned home from the ceremony, they concluded that returning the money was the right thing to do.

Give it to a less deserving candidate!

Quote:
Etta Brown, the chairwoman of the MLK Senior Citizens Club's scholarships committee, said she was shocked when she realized the winner of her group's scholarship was a white student. Since the scholarship was created in 2005, it had never been awarded to a non-black student.

Warren's decision to return the award was "generous," she said. Since the application did not explicitly disqualify non-black students, she said the group would not have asked Warren to give it back, despite some internal debate.
In the future, the application will be worded more clearly, she said.

Rod Warren said his son reasoned that if he were ineligible for the scholarship, the issue would be resolved at the interview stage of the application process. The interview, however, was over the phone, and Brown said it never occurred to the reader who interviewed Warren that the interviewee might be white.

It's not only for black students, as anyone can apply. The underlying tone is that it's there to encourage more black students to apply for scholarships.

Nope. The scholarship could help encourage Black students to go to college who otherwise might think college is too expensive to attend.

Not so sure about that but if the parents could afford to do without it then kudos.

They should just rename it the "Holy Shit College Can Be Expensive So Here's Some Free Money To Make It More Affordable For You So You Can Get A Good Education" scholarship.

I don't know how scholarships work. Would he have to choose one of the four, or are they cumulative?

Cumulative. And college in the states is fucking expensive. Unless you are a top 10% then you will have to take out loans to send your kid to college. Any assistance they can get helps.

They're usually cumulative. Unless they're linked or exceed the tuition, the scholarships are distinct from each other.

There are tons of scholarships and grants like that but not with that name. A name like that would be cool to see on a scholarship.

I give money to a scholarship to fund first time college attendees or people from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to go to school.

Basically the burden of proof is you show that no one else in your family has gone to school, or income verification.

One year, they accidentally gave the scholarship to someone who was the child of engineers. The group I give to administers other scholarships as well, so mistakes happen.

But unlike this situation, they were total dicks about giving the money back.

They're cumulative. Keep in mind that scholarships can be very small. In this case it was only $1000. I've seen scholarships that are only in the hundreds. You could barely cover one year of textbooks with that.

Really? Interesting. Well over here we don't have the same scholarship system, and almost no black population so it's hard for me to compare. It just sounds really weird to me to offer things to people based on their skin color.
I guess no-one got excluded from applying though, so it's not really too strange, it just gave me a real weird segregation vibe at first glance.

It was intended to be, but everyone was eligible. In the future it will be only for black kids.

Out of interest, for these racially based scholarships, what is the normal ruling on mixed race kids and what sort of percentages do they accept?

I think it's natural to want to give back to and nurture your own community. For many people, race constitutes community.

I don't really like the idea of giving out scholarships only depending on the color of your skin. He should have kept the money - he was eglible and won end of discussion. Changing the rules for the next contest is something different even though I think it is racist aswell.

I don't know why people are trying to spin this into a sour story. He applied for a minority scholarship, won it because the awardees didn't discriminate, and then returned it because he didn't need it. No muss, no fuss.

If you completely ignore the historical context and factual reality of current black academic admission that caused these scholarships to be created in the first place, sure.
