Franchises that deserve another chance: Dark Void Edition
#1
![]() ![]() ![]() So i'm playing this again (it's $9.99 on Steam) and man, I really hope AirTight goes back to it in the future For all it's faults, it gave us one of THE greatest themes this gen courtesy of Bear M. of Battlestar Galactica, Walking Dead, and Socom4 ![]() ![]() ![]() It had a wonderful retro sci-fi aestitic mixed with Stargate and the Rocketeer. ...yeah, reread that last line, fucking boss isn't it? Oh and let's not forget the Xbox Crimson Skies team worked on this as well. Was it too short? Yes Was it rough around the edges? Yup Was it still fun as hell? When you were mixing up the combat? absolutely! I fucking loved being mixed in a ground battle and then abruptly blasting off into the air, just to flip around and then strafe run. Did I have to do this? No. I mean, combat in it was like alot of games in that, it was what you made of it. I know most people were down on the OTS shooter bits and thought it to be just workman's Gears knock-off. In the end though, it was certainly the sum of it's parts and i'm still quite sad that we probably won't get anything like it ever again Also, play Dark Void Zero, which is also on Steam If only so you can hear this SO.DAMN.GOOD |

I didn't really care about the story. I thought that one level on the barge was pretty boring. I thought the music was nice. I glitched through the stairs roundabout the base that gets attacked about 2/3rds of the way through the game. LOL Cliffhanger but it isn't going to get a sequel.
^ This is literally the sum total of what I thought about Dark Void when I gave it a full playthrough. |

I'm numb to the pain because I don't ever see it happening but I'd love NOLF to be brought back. Funny dialogue, giant talking heads, good level design and action. Also Cate Archer, the best female protagonist in all of gaming! Rumors of a spiritual successor in the works and we see Monolith is working on LOTR DOTA at E3. I still want to believe.

I think Legend of Dragoon and Advent Rising deserve a second chance.
The concept behind LoD's battle mechanics were cool and if it had a bit more polishing and refinement, I can see it being better received. I enjoyed the ideas in Advent Rising, and the story was one of the best sci-fi stories last gen IMO. Too bad it lacked polish in both the performance and gameplay department. |

Alpha Protocol.
I just need to know what is up with G22! What's the deal with Sis? I know the common fan theory that G22 is just a prior incarnation of Alpha Protocol that evaded liquidation and is now independent, but I still think that'd be an interesting story to tell. |

I liked Dark Void and fear the loss of B-tier games like this next gen. Hell I even liked Dark Sector.
But my stock answer for these threads is always and will always be Syphon Filter. 5 of the 6 games are among my all-time favorites and I want Bend to have another shot at the console big time. There's still room for another stealthy spy shooter. And also Maximo, but I know that's hopeless. The studio and people are long gone from Capcom and the IP is just about valueless. Goddammit.

Dark Void was a weird game. Every time they would show a new build it seemed to get uglier and uglier.
As for my choices: ![]() ![]() ![]()

Yeah, I got the same impressions for Brink. I remember being really really hyped for Brink and then near it's release I realized the game had problems. Apparently it did.

Dark Void's "Wii Counterpart": Spyborgs.
Come on, it was created by quite a few ex-Insomniac folks at Bionic Games which essentially merged with High Impact Games, the other ex-Insomniac exodus company. It definitely has the spirit of Ratchet & Clank I find. All I want for now is a polished-up Wii U port in 1080p and 60fps. And whatever else they feel like adding, I'd like an option to remove upgrades just for cosmetic purposes; armor upgrades are permanent, so the characters (Stinger for one) is completely covered from head to toe. :/ If a sequel ever happened, make it a brawler/platformer mash-up, spice it up with more variety and how about changeable weapons? That's my recent one. Another is one that SHOULD'VE happened by now; Billy Hatcher 2 on Wii, why Sega, WHY?! :( I even came up with a nice Wiimote-controlled set-up. :( |

Dark Void is easily my favorite guilty pleasure this generation. I loved fighting on the ground, then firing up the jet pack and to take out some ships and then come back to hovering to clean up the rest of the troops, it gave such a great gameplay sandbox to play in. Sure the shooting mechanics were dull but they absolutely nailed the feeling of flying as a man with a jet pack strapped on his back. Either give me a sequel or Crimson Skies 2 please.

As a big Rocketeer fan I like Dark Void but it could've been so much better. There was that one level in Dark Void where you had to fly into enemy bases, sabotage it, then fly out as the bases were exploding. It made good use of the fact that you were a human with a jetpack. Too bad the rest of the game wasn't like that. With the rest of the game you might as well be flying an airplane or MAV.

I bought Dark Void for a few euros because I remembered the Zero punctuation "review" saying that the game wasn't very good but the jetpack sessions were fun... well I didn't really get far into it, but got bored and stopped playing. There was this introduction scene with the jetpack that I found hard to enjoy, and then it became a TPS inspired by Gears of War I suppose.
Maybe I should give it another chance ? |

Disagree. The controls, screen tearing and frame rate (not to mention: Nolan North forced to do Drake voice for the millionth time) for Dark Void is so bad that I stopped playing after an hour or two of gameplay cause I got insane headache.
The opening tutorial was just fucking stupid. |

Well, Shadow Warrior is still owned by Action Entertainment/Apogee Software (3D Realms) and George and Scott don't seem to be hard at work. Well, Scott/Radar Group renewed the Incarnate trademark in September last year. Earth No More is no more though. In any case I don't think they would wanna sell Shadow Warrior, without that they have practically just got Rise of the Triad left, and that game could be difficult to market.
But yeah, a modern Shadow Warrior would be a blast. I can't really think of any game from this generation that is similar to it. Sure, there are plenty of games featuring ninjas but an FPS? And Blood, as mentioned, would be nice to play again. That was also originally a 3D Realms title.

Blood Shadow Warrior All amazing games. I still play Duke using EDuke and Shadow Warrior using some program to modernize it. I need to find something that works for Blood. I actually bought Rise of the Triad on GOG but haven't gotten around to playing it yet. |

I think you guys are missing the point of the thread.
Unless im mistaken this is about games that werent exactly perfect but if given a second go maybe with bigger budgets, time and/or better dev teams could be brilliant gems. Bayonetta and Mirrors Edge are both fucking brilliant. |
