There are bible verses on the wall of the exam room and the nurse just asked if I had a boyfriend or husband. Goddamn. Compulsory heterosexuality. Fucking bible belt.
So is the nurse supposed to ask if she's "dating/seeing someone" or just not at all? I mean, it makes since that we shouldn't assume someone's sexuality like that. I suppose it's something to think about for the future although that's something I would never ask some random stranger. Seems like a pretty small thing to whine/get preachy about though.

Chick's trying hard to be a feminist/atheist/alt person/whatever and I respect that but damn, slow your roll. Who's in the wrong? Is anyone in the wrong? Is this really a big deal? Is there a lesson to be learned here?

I can understand it. Questions like that make it sound like there's one right/normal way to be. It's not hard to just ask if the person is dating without adding gender to the question.

I also think many people never consider this at all, so it would be best to educate the person involved without being so mean and angry about it. Sometimes people are just ignorant to these things until someone makes them think about it.

There's a time and a place to choose your battles, and a care-industry worker just making small talk or being friendly isn't the place to stand your ground.

She's not wrong but, you know, time and place.

It's also a standard question to see if a person's sexually active. Of course, it could've been phrased differently, but I get always this question if I'm at a new doctor's office.

This attitude drives me up the wall. You're a 2% minority. Heterosexuality is assumed barring obvious behavioral tells.

My interpretation as well.

She sounds overly sensitive.

I'd save it for if you corrected them and they reprimanded you for it, because this seems more like an innocent assumption than anything else. Might not have even stuck out if it weren't for throwing bible verses on the walls.

Of course, Twitter and the like are where we can easily dump our minor pet peeves, so that should be kept in mind too.

Might also be a generational thing. When I visit my grandmother at her retirement home, I always get asked if a have a girlfriend or wife by everyone there. I just say "no" and leave it at that.

It's twitter or a status update or something. If the person in front of you takes longer to give their order than it takes you to type your complaint about them taking too long to give their order, it's a legitimate topic. This was annoying, girl tweeted. She didn't punch the nurse in the stomach.

easily the most offensive and upsetting thing i've ever heard. i hope the nurse was referred to six weeks of sensitivity training and possibly some white collar jail time. nothing serious, but maybe something in which she might be tempted to view the opposite sex as a possible partner. also there are no bibles there, only q'urans and the tao te ching.

Very well put. I agree. The person's intent wasn't to offend. On the other hand, it must be hard to have to deal with that if you are gay.

It was a stupid thing to post because it's only drawing attention for the sake of attention. The whole "Waah! Things are different from my comfort zone! I need someone to make me feel comfortable again!" She could have just texted a friend about the situation and they had a little talk, maybe a laugh of it. But instead she wanted everyone to know and now here we are.

It was also a stupid thing to make a thread about.

For a while I tried saying "your partner" or something more generic to other guys to try to be more "open", and I would always get the response "What? You think I'm gay? I'm not gay Wtf!." so I just say "girlfriend" now.

but this is an overreaction. the patient knew what the nurse was asking. "I have a girlfriend"

making a thread out of this is probably an overreaction too. you wouldnt believe some of the shit my fb 'friends' say
