Apparently the jokes come from a joke book his dad bought him as a kid. The guy directing the roast told him to "be shocking" so he was like, "that's easy"

I made it all the way through because of how awesome it is to watch the audience turn on him. And he just keeps plowing ahead and trying, which is somewhat respectable, but ultimately just fun to laugh at.

It's funny to see Norm's style of comedy. Even when the audience doesn't get it, you can look to the faces of his colleagues and see them dying of laughter. Jon Lovitz looks like he's hanging on to his teeth, he's laughing so hard. That's all Norm has to do. Say something, anything, and the look on his face and his mannerisms do all the work.
