Online electronics dealer taxes IE7 users. #1

http://www.theverge.com/2012/6/14/30...ctronics-store

Quote:
If you insist against upgrading from Internet Explorer 7, Aussie electronics dealer Kogan is going to "tax" you an extra 6.8 percent for using the "antique browser" — 0.1 percent for every month since its release. When shoppers go to Kogan's checkout on IE7 they are greeted by a popup imploring them to get a newer browser (pictured above), and if they refuse, the extra "tax" gets listed on their total (pictured below). In a blog post the company says:

"The way we’ve been able to keep our prices so low is by using technology to make our business efficient and streamlined. One of the things stopping that is our web team having to spend a lot of time making our new website look normal on IE7."

The "tax" is a smart idea to drive some extra traffic to Kogan’s website, but we wonder who would actually pay the extra cash rather than upgrade (or just shop somewhere else). Then again, people that are still running IE7 might not be the best decision makers
This is really awesome.

This is absolutely brilliant, but there's surprisingly quite a few people complaining about this on the site's blog in the comments: http://www.kogan.com/au/blog/new-int...#disqus_thread

Although honestly, if somebody doesn't know how to click a couple of links to download a new browser version then I don't think it's very safe for them to be shopping online at all. (I know in some workplaces the user might not have the option to upgrade, but that's not the place you should be shopping anyway)

I am all for promoting advancement to newer versions of IE but this just seems like it would hurt business. IE7 is still a very popular browser.

Most people in public browse on smartphones (Android/ios) So they don't even use IE so there's no need for me to look down at them.

Exactly. And as far as the argument goes that they should promote other versions of IE, no they shouldn't. When Windows 8 comes out and you can't get IE11 or 12 on Windows 7, this whole cycle of IE being an out of date browser will start all over again. You don't have these problems with Chrome or Firefox.

These threads can be pretty amusing. I love the "get out of the dark ages, you're an incompetent idiot" mentality when it comes to IE, as if IE9 and 10 don't exist.

Chrome is still my primary browser, because extensions are just too good to give up. But with extensions, it's slower than IE, so I use IE for a few specific pages I need quick access to from the task bar.

Its a cost benefit analysis. If they think that completely cutting out business from all IE7 users is a lesser cost then the development cost of supporting IE7 then it makes sense. Personally I don't think it would be worth it.

Bit stupid. Most of the people using older browsers like that don't have a choice. I don't think Microsoft even brought IE8 (or only 9?) to XP. And people using it are probably stuck with it at work or school.

Sure, IE6 and 7 are a pain for web developers, but the hate for IE is getting a bit old. Newer versions are fine.

Then pressure IT at the work/school to stop being so behind the times?

I know at my fathers old company they wasted hundreds of thousands of dollars on outside IT help because their IT department was run by people gaf would laugh at for being so out of touch with technology.

You know you're fucked when your IT guy has his mind blown when you tell him about simple keyboard short cuts like control c/control v or control shift t etc.

You can install IE8 on WinXP perfectly, so there's no excuse. And if you're at work or school chances are you shouldn't be doing your personal shopping anyway as already stated.

So what? It's their business.

Meanwhile they've got thousands of people clicking through to their site and laughing at the clever publicity stunt.

Reeks of PR stunt.

Don't get me wrong, if you can be running something other than IE 7 you should be. IE 9 for example, or IE 10. If you can't run IE 9 then go for Chrome...

But let's face it - their IE 7 business must be minuscule for this to make any sort of sense. Given their target market I'd imagine any IE 7 visitors they have are employees using corporate machines they have no control over in their lunch break.

If anyone throws a fit about it, he might be able to get away with it like gas stations do in the US. Many are charging about $.10 more per gallon if you pay with credit instead of cash/debit. This isn't legal, so what they do is raise all the prices by $.10, and just give discounts for cash/debit. Kind of a shitty loophole, but it works.

IE8 is getting really dated as well at this point. IE9 is mostly fine but lacking some nice features modern browsers have.

I remember the first time we were able to get IE6 dropped from our contracts. In 2010. We fought long and hard to convince them that IE6 was on it's way out, that we would have to charge more for IE6 compatibility.

Thankfully IE6 imploded soon afterwards. Fuck IE6. So. hard.

Gas stations did not do that because of the law, they did it because it was against their agreements with the CC processors to raise prices for CC transactions (along with min. charge amounts). However, the Dodd-Frank bill made it illegal for the CC processors to enforce that requirement in their agreements so now the gas stations do not have to use this loophole.

I was glad when my work finally upgraded our computers to Windows 7 last year. We had Vista with IE7 before that. Now we have IE8. If we're lucky, we'll get IE9 this year.

Well, those that use it out of their own free will, at least. Not everyone has a choice.

1.5% of our weekday users are on IE 6 and about 7% on IE 7.

IE 9 is our most used browser but have we all been upgraded to Windows 7 to be able to use/test against it?...
