Kickstarter - What pushes you to back?
#1
hey all,
i've been thinking about this myself as I have backed a few projects recently. What is it that pushes you over the line and makes you back it? DFA was pretty obvious, we all want another Schafer adventure but all these other successful ones, well its different. Is it things like developers history, the game would never be made without kickstarter, an interesting idea or something else? Something which is drawing me to Kickstarters is BETA and Alpha access. Being able to look at and play the game as the thing is built really interests me, especially as i have along with a lot of people, and other investors, invested in the game. So, what makes you back? (those starting a KS might gain advice from this thread) |

Tim Schafer's incredible track record pushed me to back him.
Him owning a real company that is active and has released several titles pushed me to back him. Hiring 2PP to shoot a documentary on the production of the game pushed me to back him The frankly amazing Kickstarter campaign and videos they made pushed me to back him. I don't see myself backing anything else in the near future. I'm not going to give my money to any average joe that asks for it.

I have only backed local projects so far and will probably continue to only back them, i think it's great these games are getting made but they don't need my money to succeed, i would rather use that money to help local local art/music etc. projects get done.
I think sites like Kickstarter are great, i think it's great to help fund local things or things that interest you that might of never been made otherwise and with that being said some shady fucking shit has come out of these sites since the success of double fine and i pray bigger companies don't start to use and abuse the kickstarter type site.

I've pretty much only backed projects I have confidence will actually show up if they get funded. Things like Double Fine Adventure, Wasteland 2, those I funded no problem.
I'm more hesitant on games that say "hey, we're 90% done with our game we just need another $100k to polish it up!" or things like that. |

For game-related Kickstarters, it simply has to be something I really, really enjoy, with enticing rewards, and I have to, um, have money. I've missed out on three Kickstarter projects simply because I didn't have the money to offer up: Indie Game: The Movie, Venus Patrol and the recent Tammany Hall reprint (I know it's still live; I have no monies). Heartbreaking in each case. : (
