I never said there was? I was referring to his personal difficulties and his poor fortune at having a nation riot in his name. It was a statement of sympathy for the man.

If someone is a poor bastard, at least where I live, it is a statement they have had bad luck and carried an assumption of sympathy. A poor dumb bastard is one who was unable to do anything about it.

That's no excuse, man. We didn't talk about Rodney King and the LA Riots in school but everyone I know in my age group (early 20s) knows about it. It was a pivotal moment in US history. You were even alive when it happened, for Christ's sake.

Honestly, I think that's when our history stopped. Pretty sure we never learned shit about him in school either.

My niece who is in fifth grade has brought some of the same books home from school I did, even had one with my signature in the front. I'm 26.

He was a victim of police brutality. A bystander just happened to have a video camera and captured him getting beaten on tape.

Three of the four cops were acquitted and a verdict was never reached for the fourth.

The result? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gCHS7CsjsE
Mass violence and rioting in LA.

Later, two of the cops were sent to prison but the other two were acquitted in a federal trial.

Well I didn't say I was the standard of comparison for our age demographic or anything.

Sorry people, didn't want to derail a death thread. Maybe one day I'll make a great thread about my public education experience and you can all be mystified about how I learned more about dachshunds having bad backs than spelling in first grade or how my chemistry teacher told us more about the bible than atoms. Sorry

I don't recall ever talking about the incident in school, but I always knew what it was(aside from the fact that I was old enough to remember when it was actually happening) simply because of the mark it left on popular culture. There are many references to Rodney King and the LA Riots peppered in movies, music, and TV shows all throughout the 90s and even into the 2000s. It's a similar situation to the OJ case, or Michael Jackson's legal troubles in the early 90s, it's just that ubiquitous.
