Played a few more hours yesterday. Reached Odar (?) and I think I am close to picking up Dozeru, I'm in his dungeon, now. I finally ran into a tavern, I don't really think they are worth it. The biggest benefit is filling your food bar completely, but they only fill your hp's up partially. The problem is they are too expensive, they wanted like 14 RC. I guess it would be worthwhile if your food was dangerously low, but I have rarely gotten that low. And with the skill that makes food, I've never had any concerns on running out. Found the scroll dealer in Odar. They have a lot of nice scrolls that I want, including the Amulet License. I am thinking about grinding some more RCs before I move on. Even though I'm in the dungeon to attain Dozeru, I'm not really sure how much of it I have left. |

I just got my third party member as well. I wish I could level specific characters but I can't yet. I haven't checked what level he is but I'm sure he's a couple levels behind my other two. Oh well I guess I can fix that when I get a 4th party member and switch them in and out. This island is massive. I usually walk around everywhere I can before I complete quests but this place just keeps going and going.
Also, I'm starting to wish side quest NPC's were displayed on the minimap. I found two honeycombs but completely forgot who gave me that sidequest. I eventually found the person but it took talking to about a dozen people. |

Yes, it would be nice if we could choose a current quest and have a quest marker on the map. I know the game is old school in a lot of ways, but there just have been some changes that are for the good in regards to the genre, and having quest markers is one of them. |

You don’t really need to swap out characters to get Dozeru to the same level as everyone else. Just for the fact he needs less experience (due to being lower level) he will eventually catch up. That is what happened with Trisha when I picked her up. She was three levels behind my hero and she is now at the same level.

Put the few pearls you get for him into speed before EVERYTHING else. And give him some speed buffs on his weapons/armour too. It'll make levelling him much easier. |

Yeah I've noticed that the amount of XP per level goes up drastically so they sort of "catch up". Being 6 levels behind is say 4000xp right now but eventually it'll be 5000xp to level up soon enough and he'll only be one level behind at worst shortly. I still with I could catch him up exactly without having characters die in battle and waste the exp they would get(since the other characters don't get it instead).

I also have a bunch of permanent stat boosts (most of the types) saved for him. Probably in the area of 11-12 of them, so that should help. |

That's a great idea, I will go to the mines from now on.
I just picked up Dozeru so I think I'm going to grind over there a bit. In some serious need of coins, as I blew quite a bit buying small potions for the big boss fight. I blew through all but 2, but fortunately got 2 more back in the chest with the helmet. |

Alright, caved in and bought it after watching the Giant Bomb QL. It pretty much confirmed C-tier status, but there is definitely something addictive with the way the stat system is set up. I think at this point buying the DLC would kill the thing I'm enjoying the most, which is scrimping by with what feels like nothing.

Oh Shit:
![]() *Runs away* Just made it to dudes basement. I also just had to sell a crap ton of crafting parts. I almost maxed out those inventory slots. I hope there isn't a "Bring me 90 bleached bones" quest because I don't have that many anymore:lol. Gave me tons of money so I was able to buy some new spells and the second armlet license. |

Picked this up friday night, somehow sunk 24 hours into this, within about 48 hours.
I did buy the DLC that gives everyone 50k pearls + all the rings, but I figure $30 is not bad for a game like this. I'm really enjoying it. I do love grindan games (Disgaea and played the shit out of RO and L2 back in the day) but it seems like a lot of thought went into where healers and stuff are. It was my main annoyance to get to the dungeon, then fight for a bit, then have to trek all the way back to a town to heal. You dont have to do that in this. The combat is good(love my SRPG) and the graphics dont bug me at all (I still play SNES on my PSP). All in all I love it, want more! |

Its very clever. I just find it so easy to grind. Truth be told, I get in the mood for this kind of stuff, but dont like the fragmented mission structure of Disgaea.
I only stopped because I realised I'm starving, and that I've played a days worth in 48 hours. I could see myself getting sick of pearl grinding, I hope more drop soon. I'm at Endless Passage and I'm still only getting like 10-30 in a fight. |

I have a 4th party member now. Kind of funny how He was level 20 when I had to defeat him to get him to join my party. But he was only level 14 when he did join.
Now for some more pearl grinding. I also managed to complete the second part of the dungeon in the top right corner of the map. Third part starts with a level 41 character. |

I've put a lot of time in since posting last. My hero and Trisha are both 15, Dozeru is 14.
Went and explored Temwall Castle, got all the way to the end (at least what I can finish now), and ran into Red Death. I didn't even attempt him as he is level 22, and has 18 of his buddies. I'm thinking "Ok, I'll go explore the Ochre Swamp area, as I have the key." Did alright in there, although an Imp Leader obliterated Trisha with their ranged poison flask attack. But, picked up the quest from the farmer (can't remember his name) and made my way over to the Queen Bee. Um, yeah. Level 20 Not ready for that, either. So I think I'm just going to build up some more funds, pearls, and then levels, for now, maybe go explore Stormlord's Den some more.

I normally won't buy DLC that adds in game items unless it's story based DLC. I wanted to be able to play this without having to spend dozens of hours before I would have enough pearls to level everything up. I broke down last night and bought money and pearls for the game and I am greatly enjoying this game now.
My main character and Trisha are each around level 13 and I just got Dozeru who I have at level 9. |

Man it's going to be hard to use different party members later. I've got so much invested in the ones I've currently got. Especially considering spells go way up in price if someone already has them equipped. I'll probably add someone with magic to the mix but that's about it.
Question, does the game remove characters from your party or make you do battles with specific characters at any point? Or are you safe to stick with what you like and completely ignore the other members? Edit: I just found a hidden cave. There's one of those green fire squares blocking your way right at the beginning so I can't do anything. The enemies look badass so that's probably a good thing. Edit 2: Man this second island goes on forever. Right after I got the 4th party member, I decided to go as far as the game would let me before continuing on with the main quest. I found a massive cave with a side quest in it, I completed part of another side quest, and I snagged a few rainbow medals. Also got some better armor with 4 slots in them to boot! Oh and a ton of rainbow coins.

How many continents are in the game? I heard there are over 20 dungeons, but some of them can only be accessed post-game.

I am about to get my fourth party member but I need to go through his house to pick up his bag. Got to the very end and was getting demolished by the boss. I shut the game off halfway through the battle after my first party member died so I might have to grind a little before I try again.

One thing that is minorly annoying is I have gotten axes/picks to chop down trees or break away rocks, but they are one use only. So any additional tree you need to chop down, or additional rock you need to destroy, you need another axe/pick. I just wish you picked up the tool and kept it for good. |

Every time I read this thread, I think this game sounds really good. Then I watch videos of it on YouTube, and I think this game doesn't look that good. But then I read this thread again, and you guys make it sound like it's really good. But then I watch YouTube videos again, and.... Stop confusing me!

Will need to double-check when I play again.
May I ask what it is you don’t like in the videos?

The guy that gives you the Queen Bee quest gives you another one first. Whatever it was, I already had the necessary items when I initially found him. BTW the secret area I found in near there. Go have a look. I was just searching corners and dead ends for hidden coins and boom secret area.
The trophy says "Discover and enter the Ochre Swamp an optional area in Rainbow Moon". I didn't get it right away however so I'm not sure what triggers it. |

Ok, I remember completing that quest. So I must have gotten the trophy.
Did you end up finding a way to open the second door in Southport Mines?
The switch is actually *right* next (south) to the switch that opens the door by the entrance, the door directly above the Savant. I noticed I had not opened the door, either. And started searching around for the switch and had a "Duh!" moment when I found it right next to the other switch. I just completely missed it. I am guessing you did the same. If you haven't found it yet, I suggest you do so, there is quite a bit of treasure back there. May be kind of low for your level now, but coins are coins and there is also an Expander and a Magic Light spell.

Yeah, I had bought it already, as well. But it doesn't hurt to have two people have it, or, you can just sell it.

I generally don't like to critique games, especially in threads where people are expressing enthusiasm over the game. However, in answer to your question, I would say that the animations are a bit simple for a PS3 game (trite complaint for a SRPG, I know), and even though "slow-paced" is to be expected in an SRPG, the game strikes me as being just a bit too-slow-paced, especially with an overworld, exploratory setting. I can understand slow-paced battles in Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre, where you generally move from one battle to the next. But I imagine constantly, randomly encountering long battles while trying to explore the lay of the land must get frustrating after a while.
I'm glad people are enjoying it, however, and I can see its appeal. I'm just not sure if it is right for me. |
