As a congressman, Ryan voted for the 2002 Iraq Resolution which authorized President George W. Bush to use military force in Iraq. He also voted in favor of the Iraq War troop “surge” in 2007.

Obama invoking healthcare? But I thought he couldn't run on his record!

The main reason Obama's going to win is because he can run for president on his own record, as his own candidate. Everything about Romney's campaign revolves around Obama being terrible - he's a ridiculous sideshow by comparison.

"Obama can't run on his record" always struck me as a flawed talking point seeing as Obama can bring a myriad of successes to the table, even in spite of not achieving all he set out to do. And as time has rolled on, Romney becomes increasingly unable to run on HIS (already limited) record.

Right up there with Romney's claims of "President Obama has no plan" while not presenting any clear plan with meaningful detail himself for anything. And "President Obama is resorting to dirty tactics and personal attacks" while running himself a campaign littered with misdirection and half truths through to outright lies that make Team Obama look like boy scouts by comparison.

The Obama camp has to go with quality over quantity due to SuperPACs. Every ad they release has to be designed to maximize its impact and influence on the electorate. They've been doing an excellent job so far on that front.

The health care law that doesn't do much for most people today, that most people still don't support? Yea ok

He can't run on his economic record, outside of a couple niche areas like the auto bailout. Basically his message used to be "things could have been a lot worse" and now it's "hey at least I won't shitcan Medicare"

I'm sure the President supports raising the minimum wage, as do most Democrats, which would help many people. Republicans want to get rid of it altogether.

The healthcare law has gained popularity since the Supreme Court ruling, the last Kaiser poll had 53% wanting Congress to keep or expand it and a majority of independents wanting Republicans to stop trying to repeal it and move onto other issues. It's true that it's not overwhelmingly popular but it's not the anchor it was for Democrats in 2010, and it's something Obama can point to as a genuine accomplishment.

As for his economic record, we are in a recovery whether you want to admit it or not, and Obama has been running on it. The only reason the message has shifted over to Medicare is because Mitt Romney is a fucking idiot and chose Paul Ryan as his VP. No shit he's going to attack him on Medicare, they may as well have nominated this guy:

I think you're just mad that your guy is running the "perfect campaign" and he's still behind in the polls.

I was actually driving through Virginia while Mitt was there, and passed his bus. Let's just say it wasn't a great way to start my vacation. :D

Paul Ryan was a safe pick in that it will fire up the GOP but do nothing for everyone else, although it's also going to scare seniors away. I already talked to several older folks in my family who were on the fence but now solidly Obama because Ryan scares the shit out of them.

Although, Ryan (and the media) have been hammering away at the talking point that Medicare will be propped up for the next couple generations (and the hell with everyone else after that, I guess!) If they can sell that right, it might be able to ease a lot of seniors' concerns if they know their coverage is going to secured. To what extent is not going to be as great as Ryan wants you to believe, but again, if he sells it right he might be able to stop the bleeding with his reputation among seniors.

I really thought it was dumb that Mittens didn't pick Portman or Rubio. Just goes to show you how purely ideological the GOP has become these days.

The whole Biden "chains" comment was really no big deal. Nobody will care about this by the end of next week. I loled at the media coverage.

It is interesting to see the race tightening up in OH, FL, WI, and CO, but it's to be expected.

What pissed me off more than anything else was PA's voter ID law being upheld. That's pretty significant. As a PA resident I'm outraged. Corbett has been nothing but an obstructive troll since he was sworn in as Gov; this is the icing on the rotten cake. There's enough states passing these kinds of laws that could potentially make a difference in a close election, and more than Paul Ryan or Biden saying something about Wall Street and chains, it's the one thing worth worrying about.

The EV's look good for Obama today but you never know what could happen in the next couple months. If things seem to start breaking for the GOP ever so slightly, and you have Democratic voters getting turned down or so confused/demoralized over these stupid laws that they don't turn out, it could allow the GOP to squeak in a victory in a state like PA. You have to remember that the turnout in Philly and surrounding areas really offsets the GOP vote elsewhere in the state; assuming things were to really tighten up before November, we could have a big problem if a lot of those voters are denied their right to vote. Now, if Obama can maintain at least a 5-7 point lead here in PA, it shouldn't matter. But if it tightens (and it could), then I'd really start worrying. If it's a 2 or 3 point race here, PA is probably up for grabs.

But this could also prove to be a problem in other states as well. Scott's antics in Florida aren't making me feel that great about Obama eeking out a win there, for example. Case in point: if Obama wins, GOP state legislatures are going to lose their shit. They'd probably try to find something in their newly passed voter ID laws to try and demand some kind of recount or figure out a way to invalidate votes or delay the outcome of the election for as long as possible. When you have such a highly corrupt and ideological GOP driving not only Congress but state legislatures across the nation, you have to be prepared for that.

In general, I think Voter ID is going to be a mess. It's nothing more but a coordinated effort to suppress votes for Obama, and anyone who thinks otherwise has been duped.

Pathetic, scary, and sad. But that's the GOP for you.

Yeah. It's been a source vexation throughout his term. Unprecedented minority intransigence by the GOP has doubtlessly hindered Obama. But as the article notes, the Administration's also culpable. I only fear that a divided Senate is going to completely neuter his power of appointment.

Perhaps. And I'd welcome their appointments if Republicans continue their devilry. But for him to cement his judicial legacy, Senatorial confirmation is necessary.

Right. The notion Obama's running from his economic record is erroneous. That he occasionally focuses on other issues that may benefit him electorally, i.e., immigration and Medicare, does not suggest he's demure about his record.

RAND held a congressional briefing last month on marijuana legalization because of the forthcoming state initiatives in November. What intrigues me is, presuming at least one initiative passes, how the federal government responds. Further, the implications for the other states are tectonic. For example, if the initiative in Colorado passes, the price of marijuana decreases nationally. And the effect is considerable in neighboring states. This could have monumental consequences for the entire nation's marijuana policy.

A link to the video; it's thirty minutes long.

Who would have thought that a few years later we would live in a world where there was an outside chance Joe the Plumber or Herman Cain could have that job. It is not politics as usual. It's a nadir and we need a correction course.
