The Amazing Spider-Man |OT| #1

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker, an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben and Aunt May. Like
most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy, and together
they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance —
leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors, his father’s former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make
life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero. [Note: TASM is a reboot of the Spider-Man franchise, not to be confused with dir. Sam Raimi's SM trilogy.]

Gah, still haven't seen anything that looks promising from the footage to date. The soundtrack is incredibly disappointing as well. Still there day one though. I'm really hoping this is just one of those films where the adverts don't do the actual film justice.

Review snippets

Quote:
Webb & The Web-Spinner
"Webb successfully treads a fine line between keeping the hardcore superhero-movie fans happy and injecting a dose of meaningful affect. Parker is generally reckoned to be the most 'relatable' figure in the superhero canon, but the pastel-bright synthetics of the earlier movies did little to dispel the sense that the comic-book world could only construct its characters out of clunking great blocks of melodrama. In re-engineering Parker into the introspective, uncertain male more typical of his previous film, Webb is aided by a terrific performance from Andrew Garfield, who brings a genial unflappability that allows him to negotiate the often-ludicrous demands of the superhero plotline. At the same time, Webb also shows an unarguable facility for the more traditional action elements of the story, and the 3D certainly helps: he pulls off some properly nauseating shots as Parker dives off skyscrapers, rescues kids from falling, and the like." — Andrew Pulver, The Guardian
Quote:
Toning It Down
"The shadow of 'Batman Begins' looms as 'Amazing' opens, the gold standard of origin-skewed reboots riskily invoked. Parker as a child plays games at home, stumbles on some destiny-sealing revelations, loses his parents on a stormy night... A dark roots movie steeped in tragedy? Some 'untold story,' that. Webb finds much surer footing as Parker hits high school, helped by crack casting. More confident than the last, this Parker is slick on a skateboard and not shy about standing up to Flash Thompson. The geek just got chic: who better to play him than the guy with the algorithms and rhythm from 'The Social Network'? A young buck made testy by grief, a rebel without a comb, Garfield nails all bases here, star DNA aglow. Stare-y eyes melting, he's winningly earnest; lithe of physique, he delivers in the dust-ups; blithely gatecrashing Gwen Stacy's bedroom, he gives good dreamboat." — Total Film
Quote:
Love For The Ladies
"Then there's his needle-sharp young girlfriend, Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), who wants to get under his skin even more than that radioactive arachnid did; find out what it is that makes his Spidey-senses tingle. Amid all of the soul-searching and lip-biting, it suddenly struck me: Webb has created the first superhero movie aimed primarily at women. Ever since 'Twilight' tipped off Hollywood to the spending power of girls and their mothers, a range of increasingly expensive films aimed at that audience has materialised. Perhaps it was only a matter of time before a superhero suited up with them in mind, although it remains to be seen how die-hard Spider-fans will react to their hero courting a different — some would say rival — demographic." — Robbie Collin, The Telegraph
Quote:
The Negative Spin
"Director Marc Webb aims for a new realism, stripping away the brio of Sam Raimi's 2002 version with Tobey Maguire. He also dispenses with much of the character and sass that always made this character fun. It's not Garfield's fault: he is a convincingly troubled, inarticulate Peter Parker, a springily athletic Spider-Man, and has awesome hair. His greatest enemy is the script. That, and the rather wearisome 3D." — Nick Curtis, The London Evening Standard
Quote:
The Final Word
"Graced with great performances from Garfield and Stone, 'The Amazing Spider-Man' is a rare comic-book flick that is better at examining relationships than superheroism. If it doesn't approach the current benchmark of 'Avengers Assemble,' it still delivers a different enough, enjoyable origin story to live comfortably alongside the Raimi era." --Ian Freer, Empire

Reviews are surprising so far. I was an early defender of ASM, but that latest trailer and some of the negative buzz took their toll on me. Right now, the best case scenario is that I'll probably enjoy the casting and the universe more than Raimi's take. Maybe I'll like this one better than the original film. I don't see it touching Spider-Man 2, though.

But I think the best TV Spots so far are these (#7&8); http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8saW6bUQAok 30s each so it's not giving away too much.

Yup, they're already coming in but mostly from the UK, but the US reviews will probably be going up today/tomorrow.

Here's another (great) review I saw, RT is at 86% but only 7 reviews (but no top/real critics) so who knows where it'll actually end up landing with 20+. Seems positive so far though!

The opening paragraph for that review is great, though;

Quote:
The unexpected breakout star of The Amazing Spider-Man is a cellphone. No, really.

Peter Parker has it glued to his ear for much of the movie, even when he’s Spider-Man. Either that, or he’s playing games on it. It’s in those moments, when he’s lounging on a giant web passing time with a puzzle app, or crouched on a parapet thousands of feet above Manhattan, being told by Aunt May to remember to buy some eggs on the way home, that the 21st century big-screen Spidey resonates in harmony with the Spidey that Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created 50 years ago. Even when he’s hunting down villains, he’s still just a teenager, living in the real world, dealing with everyday problems, and the film captures that enduring Spidey spirit perfectly.
Gives me a very Ult. SM vibe where he talks on his phone. :lol

THR: TASM current tracking at $125+ million 6 day opening

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/new...opening-340274

Pre-release tracking is impressive for the superhero reboot, suggesting a six-day opening of $125 million or more, the best showing of any summer film outside of box office goliath The Avengers.

The 6 day tracking numbers are good but what is the general thinking on the three day/opening weekend number?

If the studio is (likely low ball) estimating $125m for the 6 days is a guess of $60-70m for the weekend a solid shout?

Gotta love the Sheffield crowd reactions
Quote:
John Moran, aged 41, Doncaster, said: “It’s amazing. Brilliant. Really good effects. One of the bet they’ve made - it beats the previous films in the series. It captures his agility to to swing through the air. His connection with the spiders. Fantastic. I really enjoyed it.”
Quote:
Arthur Blythe-Warren, 11, of Sheffield, said: “It was one of the bet Spider-man films ever made. I like when he fought the big lizard.
Quote:
Adam Kamran, seven, of Rotherham, said: “I thought it was awesome. I loved when he jumped into things. I knew he would beat the lizard.”
Quote:
Holly Eyre, 20, of Sheffield, said: “It was really amazing! It’s so much like the comic books. I’ve read lots of original Spider-Man comics and Andrew Garfield is amazing as Spider-Man. He’s so much better than Toby Maguire.

“I wouldn’t recommend watching this in anything but 3D.”
Quote:
Nigel Burgon, 46, of Sheffield, said: “It was fantastic, really well made. The 3D really works and the acting is good. It’s a must see film. I’ve seen it two weeks before all my friends.”
Quote:
Adam Dulley, 21, of Sheffield, said: “ Wow. It was good. I’ve been following the films. You can’t fault it. The 3D effects were great - it made me want to dodge out of the way.”
Quote:
Vance Warner, 37, and his wife, Melissa, 42, said it was a great night out. Vance said: “It was spectacular - the 3D element of it and the web slinging as he swung through the city.” Melissa added: “It was a good story line and the 3D and the effects were amazing. out of this world. Really enjoyed it. Very good film.”
Quote:
Lyndon Dodsworth, 26, of Bolsover, said: “I thought it was a half-way decent action film and a OK superhero film. I think I’ll go home and watch the original trilogy, to see how it draws up to those. It’s a bit weird when you watch a 3D film, for the first hour or so you think wow, this is amazing, then you stop noticing after that, so I don’t know if it’s going to be the next big thing or not. But yes, I enjoyed it. It’s not bad watch.”
That last one obviously being a gaffer.
