I usually avoid these movies, but I'm starting to become curious. Is it Street Fighter?

Independence Day

The freakshow scene with all the typical characters seals the B-movie qualification. It was disguised with great actors and a top-notch production value.

Is Alien a B-movie?

If so I'd still say Verhoeven made the best of 'em all with Robocop. Also I'm really fond of old 50s sci-fi flicks.

I agree with and enjoy pretty much every movie posted. I just went with the last B movie I watched and enjoyed. Some of my all time most watched films are B movies.

This and Naked Weapon. One of my best friends and I watched that shit a couple of times a term whilst at uni and we'd discover a new plot hole or two each time.

A deliciously noir-y piece of film noir. Highly recommended. It's public domain, I believe, and can be legally downloaded for free.

How do you define the characteristics of what makes a B-Movie? Is it a stupid plot? Who-the-hell-is-that kind of actors? Low budget?

I didn't really think of Independence Day or Men in Black as B-Movies, since they have fairly strong, well-known casts and huge production budgets. But its not like these movies are fine cinema, so I guess I can understand

Alien's budget was 11 million dollars.

B-movie by definition means low budget. The term comes from the old bottom halves of double features.

Alien would have definetly been the main show.

B-movies are often known for the skimpy budgets against outrageous scenarios. B-level sci-fi movies have crazy monsters but delivered with cheap methods. Those are underlined with actors delivering dialogue as if the obviously-fake monsters were any threat at all.

Like I said, Independence Day is absolutely a B-movie with a superior budget. With the freakshow scene, there's the scientist, the general, the President, not-so-fake-looking-alien, and bunch of other archetypes in one room, and they're all serious.

but thinking more about this, I want to nominate another movie

GODZILLA / GOJIRA

Bolded: Self-awareness doesn't immediately disqualify as a B-movie, but I feel it goes against it.

I believe it was originally a term that denoted the first film that played in double features at theatres. The films served as opening acts, essentially. They were typically lower budget, sometimes campy, and generally just of lower quality. Some actors spent their whole careers relegated to B movies. As the idea of double features faded away, however, categorizing B movies became a little more nebulous. It's typically used now to describe any movie that is campy, either knowingly or unknowingly, or movies that have smaller cult followings.
