New Madden 13 Vita article (with first ever screenshots) #1

I played the Vita game this week, and to be clear, it appears to be shaping up nicely. Most of the touch controls, such as the ability to tap on a receiver and draw hot routes with a finger, are smart and welcome additions. The game includes full Franchise and Superstar modes, and will receive weekly roster updates and Madden Moments Live content throughout the 2012-13 NFL season. Of course, the graphics aren't quite upto par with Madden 12 on PS3, but they're still impressive on the Vita's five-inch screen.

Player models remind me of the 2k series (thinner)...which could be fine for some....i think it looks good.

But like i found out with Fifa Vita, the most important part with the graphics to me was animation and framerate. Someone has recently been telling me Fifa Vita actually runs at 30fps, but this whole time i thought it was 60fps...and i'm usually good at judging framerate. So if Madden Vita has smooth animations, plays like Madden 12 (which i love), and has the same framerate as Fifa Vita....then i will behappy forthisyear. Next year I'm expecting a big jump however.

Edit- DAMN messed up the title...can a mod fix it please.

This is the new Madden game with totally high-tech computer physics right?

The game doesn't look any different to me in screens, but in motion it does look quite a bit better.

Do you think it's because everything was so small that it's hard to tell?

I'm really not sure if I'll get a Madden on the Vita, although I wouldn't mind a dabble on a handheld version. I picked up '10 a few years back (which was my first and only Madden since the EA/2K debacle) and I just couldn't get into it. My biggest problem with EA Sports games is they expect the player to know everything already. I don't find them very user friendly for n00bs.

Not to derail the thread so early but I really liked the NFL2K series, I don't watch sports but the 2k football games were so good. You could actually play defense, my games would end like 13-10, it definitely broke the "score a touchdown on every possession" mentality.

Oh, they weren't able to port their secret real-time physics engine to the Vita?

Screen looks really good, I thought it was the console version.

Well, BioWare is kind of busy lately, so it takes time to move over the Infinity Engine.

In the aritcle it says they decided late in the developement to add physics this for the console versions...they were planning to add it next year......but Vita is not a huge priority for the *new* EA Tiburon (they have another dev working on the port), Tiburon are too focused on trying to bringing back respectablity to the Madden console series. I expect next year it will be an easier port of the PS3 version, as they learn more about the Vita hardware and Sony updates software to hopefully make PS3 ports easier.

I was mostly just joking about how the inclusion of *physics* is being made into such a huge deal. If it wasn't for that license, Madden 2009 would have probably looked like Madden 13 does.

Better late than never I guess. The depth that they're showing with the online franchise stuff this year does look really intriguing though. This game isn't going to have that though? A bit confused about this- they're releasing Madden 12 for Vita and updating the rosters for it and not porting Madden 13 over?

Yep, looks like Madden alright. I just wonder why the 3DS version was so bare bones while this one seems to have a decent amount of content.

Either way, hope those who are looking forward to this will enjoy it.

Oddly, everyone I know who owns/owned a PSP used to love playing Madden on it. It seems like there's a big draw to that on a handheld, which I guess makes some sense. How well does the franchise typically sell on handhelds?

I don't buy Madden often and I think the Vita is a perfect platform for it. I may grab both Vita and 360 this year. Haven't bought Madden since like 2006.

3DS version may have been based on the mobile (iOS/Android) version whereas this looks like it's based on the console version of Madden 12. But I really don't get why they didn't just work on porting 13 while 13 was in development. Why would that take significantly more resources?

I'm honestly surprised there's no Madden for 3DS this year. You'd think that since now they have the engine running they'd just release roster updates if the sales weren't there to warrant any more.

I have no numbers for you, but I've been told that most of the EA Sports library generally earned their keep on PSP.

One year in the UK, FIFA PSP and the previous year's FIFA PSP were the top two selling PSP titles that year. :lol

That's probably not a large number of copies, but still.

As a NeoGAF poster, this surprises me and I find it to be weird. As a person who knows a handful of PSP owners, it doesn't surprise me at all. Sports titles, eh? I wonder why.

Then again, if you remove FPS games (for obvious reasons, before Vita at least) and big IP's (which are generally console focused), I guess sports games would be the next thing on the list.

So the person who wrote that article also posts on Operationsports.

here are some things he said..

Quote:
I didn't spend a whole lot of time with the Vita version of Madden 13, but what I can say for now is this: it looks almost as good as Madden 12 did on PS3/360. Obviously, HB Studios had to make some visual sacrifices to get the game running — notice, for example, that 3D leg pads are gone — but the player models and frame rate seemed fine. I think it's more impressive in motion than the screenshots convey, especially on a five-inch screen at 540p (and isn't that usually the case?)
don't really care about those leg pads..even though this year I think it is mandatory for players to wear them in the NFL. I just want a good running game that looked like its console counterpart....like Fifa Vita. I personally thought Madden 12 looked good, so I'm happy to know it looks close to it.

Quote:
The commentary is the only "major" Madden 13 improvement that the Vita version is getting. I'm not sure if it will have the "new" left-stick passing location stuff, but Baker told me that at least Madden 13's wide variety of passing trajectories will be there (so you won't throw a line drive or a lob every time).
This is VERY good to know...this means the Devs are not just making a direct port of Madden 12 and calling it a day..they are still tinkering with what they feel they realistically can get in that would help out gameplay.

i might buy this. it would be nice to have a near-console quality portable madden.

as for ncaa, for some reason EA hates it. most consoles don't get ncaa. not pc, wii, ds, 3ds, etc. it has usually been this way and i don't get why EA doesn't just release it for every system like they do madden. for gods sake they fucking released madden 12 on playstation 2 last year. i don't think madden 13 is getting a ps2 release but NCAA just doesn't get the support that madden and fifa get

What's up with the lack of players being shown in the photos? There's no more than two (well one does have an ankle and foot) players in everyone of them.

Obviously, missing details like pads, refs and even bare sidelines are easy to ignore given that this is their first game on the system. But its going to have to have one hell of a demo to sell me. The idea of a solid Madden on Vita is appealing though.

I've said this before...but when you quote an image on GAF...and you are viewing it on a laptop screen (17"here)....the quoted pic is almost exactly the same size as the Vita screen. Which in turn, gives a better idea of what it should look like...not counting the benefits of OLED, compared to LCD.

I think it more has to do with Madden 12's engine. It didn't have HDR and other effects.

you look at Fifa on Vita and its seems like it carried over the HDR from its Fifa 11's console engine. Same thing with MLB The Show, it seemed to have carried over HDR and other effects. (although other IQ took a hit)

If they had made NCAA Vita, I'm sure it would've looked better than these shots...because NCAA 2012's engine had HDR and other effects..where as Madden 12 didn't.

People should know by now that screenshot will never do justice for a Vita game. In motion with DAT SCREEN, a lot of them looks fabulous.

If anyone has played FIFA on Vita, you'll know that it'll always be based on last year's game.

Considering Madden seemingly goes backwards every year this gen I am really not that annoyed that its based on last years engine.

Game looks really good too. I am actually surprised to be honest given all the rumblings that it'd be iOS quality (not taking a shot at iOS games just was expecting a crappy iOS port honestly).
