Or did SO4 weld the seal on that coffin? I haven't even heard a whisper about that series in a long time.

I think that series joined Onimusha, Dino Crisis, Breath of Fire, and Power Stone. :(

I really don't have faith in them. I don't think they could ever make another good Star Ocean game, so I'd rather see a new RPG.

Tri-Ace is basically only doing contract work these days, and I don't think Square Enix is interested in more console games made entirely by them.

Star Ocean: The Second Story is still probably one of my favorite games.

Sad they couldn't match its quality so... I guess the series can be put to rest now. They've tried.

They only really make one Star Ocean per generation anyway. Assuming the series were still alive they probably wouldn't have much to say about it right now.

tri-Ace doesn't seem to have anyone willing to help them out with a big console game though, so I'm doubtful SOV (or VP3) are happening...

I played the remakes of the first two on PSP, and they were fantastic. Shame the series is probably over, but given how SO3 and 4 turned out, that might be for the best.

Huge SO fan. After seeing the reviews for the new one i didn't even bother. I played SO for the cheezy yet decent story. The characters just looked plain dumb for V.

Didn't Star Ocean IV still sell kinda good? especially if you add PS3 version sales? Not to mention that MS probably paid something for timed exclusivity. As much as I hated the art and characters I still loved the battle system and would like to see sequel.

The best question is does Tri Ace even the staff to make a game?

That tech demo they released looked really promising. Would be a great place to start a reboot from.

I really dont understand why Japanese developers arent taking advantage of the success of the PS3 in Japan, heck both the HD systems have done well overseas as well.

I actually really liked Star Ocean 3. Never played 4, but 2 and 1 were also pretty dece from what I've played of them.

They could use better writers though, that's for sure.

I wonder what will happen with the stuff from that tech demo they did? I guess a best case scenario is that they are pushing forward with their own games on their next-gen engine and the contract work is just biding their time and keeping the lights on.

Is it wrong I'd take a sequel of SO4 just to laugh at the ludicrous story & dialogue? The gameplay was great, and the characters had me rolling from the surreal absurdity of everything going on. Wouldn't pay more than $30 for it, but yeah, I'll take my nappy time 'kay?

Yeah, sorry, thats the one. It literally screams Star Ocean. It just feels like a teaser somehow... They wouldn't release it if they didnt intended to use it, or they are just going to use it on Square projects?

I seem to recall that SO4 was called "The Last Hope" because it literally was the last hope for the series... Square was planning to can it if it didn't do well.

It didn't do well.

My prediction at the time was that it was a last ditch effort to try and generate interest in signing them for a console game.

It failed and now they serve largely as an outsourcing house.

It didn't do well compared to what?

Anyhow. I still liked SO4. Characters and writing were kind of bad, but the general plot had a nice setup, graphics were nice and colorful, and the battle system was top notch. Thats the most important bits. It seems like SE is trying to get themselves straightened out presently, maybe after that happens we'll see talk of a new game.

I hold the same opinions as you do regarding 3, 2, and 1, and I thought 4 was terrible outside of the battle system. First time I found a cast of characters and writing so bad that I couldn't even force myself to finish a game.

I think that if Platinum can still do it, Triace probably can too. But that might be too hopeful.

Around the time of announcement, MS was still pushing pretty hard in Japan. The Great RPG Rush of 2008, I believe it's called where they had Tales of Vesperia, Last Remnant and SO4 all announced for the system.

You mean like Square-Enix did with the Agnis Philosophy thing?

But also, on a side note, why does tri-ace help SE? Do they signed a contract or something? Because they actually helped a lot on XIII-2 iirc. They cant release a game by themselves anymore?
