I decided to post my impressions after 2 hours playing.

First of all I believe this game can be good looking, but I have no idea, I have a Laptop with the following specs:

2.3 GHz i5
4GB DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 3000 (Yeah...)

Which means I have to run everything on LOW. Now, I don't know if it's lag or is it because the performance on my Laptop but I get some slowdowns very similar to Lag. I would love to know the real reason. I'm also very amateur when it comes to specs so if there's something I can do to improve the experience I would like to know.

I'm on Level 4. Did the Tutorial, which is a good introduction. The recoil on the weapons seems good, if you have a good team based players the experience is much better. I saw some "hate" on newcomers saying Steam sucks, etc. I'm okay with that.

Customization is huge but I've not spent much time around it. At the start is looks too much information.

Regarding achievements: I played some Domination games and got not even one but then I did a TDM and I got 3 in a row... Strange. Maybe there's some problem with them?

It seems there's a lot to learn in this game and I need more time to discover things (I was walking when a MECH appeared and I was like: WHAT IS THIS, OH I'm dead..). IF my Laptop don't overheat in the process...

I am loving this game. Got really hooked last night. My only complaint is that the menus are an absolute mess. Super confusing and the item descriptions aren't great either.

Is there a good guide on how to use your CP or whatever? I got the Starter pack, but I'm hesitant to spend my "money" because with Tribes: Ascend, I bought a bunch of stuff with real currency/"Gold", that I could have easily unlocked with XP, so I don't want to jump the gun.

Don't buy anything in the beginning. Burstfire the Aussault Rifle and you're good to go. Wait till at least level 8-10 and rent some stuff for a day to try it out. Then buy it if you're happy with what you saw.

Thanks. So GP is earned and Zen is bought, but neither influences how "permanent" a weapon is? Some weapons/items are permanent, others aren't?

Because it's a F2P game. You didn't pay anything to play this, giving you free stuff with every level up wouldn't make any sense. They already give you permanent weapon tags (which btw have stats, people seem to ignore that).

Just play it like any other FPS and you can unlock your first weapon reciever like an SMG within 5 hours of playtime.
It just seems very stingy when renting is advertised as the primary way to get access to gear (it's the first option you're shown when opening the buy dialog) and it's something that's not very useful to people who play only sporadically (since a 1 day rental that costs 2 matches to purchase may very well only get used for one match). Also I played the original Blacklight a lot and while I do appreciate the improvements (e.g. actually showing the stats you're tuning instead of leaving you in the dark about that) I'd rather have a similar lump-sum type of game where I don't have to worry about timing my actions to fit into the real time limits of the game. Perma unlocks seem extremely expensive (just for comparison, Call of Duty throws like 4 level ups at you in your first match) and overall it requires a massive time investment to really get a large toolbox for tuning guns.

I suppose the netcode is less of an issue this time due to dedicated servers? A popular tactic in the original Blacklight was to spec for speed and just race around, relying on the lack of lag compensation to make yourself hard to hit. The Unreal Engine 3 really ruins game balancing in multiplayer.

Though personally I still find the combat the primary deal breaker because I like FPSes more when combat is about actual fights and you have to take multiple actions instead of just firing a quick burst to get a kill.

When you decide to purchase a weapon, you are given the option to "rent it" for up to 7 days or make it "permanent" which, of course, lets you use it forever. Depending on what you go with, the price varies. I think the base for a one day rental is about 200GP which is about as much as you will get in one round of a game. If you want to make something permanent, it costs maybe around 5,000GP or so depending on what the item is.

It's nice to be able to check something out for a day to see if you like it and then go ahead and purchase it if you like it without making the big investment and finding out it wasn't worth it.

Ok, I can understand where you are coming from, I just want to adress the renting issue one more time. You can change the default option for purchases to "permanent" in the menu. That way you will always see the permanent price first. :)

In the menu for "renting" a weapon, you can switch from 1 day to 7 days or to permanent. There is a little drop down box. As I just said, you can switch the default option to permanent in the settings. So you will always see the perm price first. Some things can't be permed with GP though, like the Heavy Assault Rifle currently, though that will change with time. They just want to give paying customers something exclusive ;)

Map design sucks imo, it's too enclosed and convulated. I suppose that's to encourage use of HRV. It's a good thing the gunplay in this game is so good that it makes me overlook my issues with the maps(for now anyway).

Having a default global chat is a bad idea. Nothing but garbage there.

Why not just spend how much real monies you feel the game is worth to you?

If you think this is the greatest game ever, you can spend $1000.

If you feel it's good, spend $X?

I'm a fan of F2P but I'm not a fan of $10 loadout slots and the like. I feel the game is worth money but if I have to buy something as basic as a loadout I'm not really interested.

If I could unlock everything by playing and buy to unlock faster then I would be a fan, since I'm forced to spend money not so much.

The proper way to do F2P is convenience buys, in my opinion. Everyone says they don't want gamebreaking things, so your $10 loadout is exactly that.

I've not played the game yet, I'll concede, but this sounds like the smartest F2P proposal I've ever seen. Everything seems inoffensive. All of it.

Kinda surprised how popular this game is on Steam. It's in the top 10 most played and has more CCUs than Blops and MW2 (granted Blacklight is F2P, but still impressive imo).

You unlock another loadout at like lvl 4 and I would assume more later on. There are only a few cool attachments and some armors that are cash only and their stats can be gained through alternatives if you no want to pay the monies.

This has got to be the only shooter this gen that I've played where I don't feel like I died because the enemy was better equiped.

You will see dudes who have a shit ton of armor and they'll be slow. You'll see a guy who's very fast, but he has crap accuracy and damage with guns.

It all works out well.

I plan on decking myself out in the leather jacket and whatever else makes me fast. Knifing people in this game is my new favorite pastime.

Also, the pricing is great.
:::Say you want to try a new gun.
Well, you can pay around 125 GP(GP is in-game points earned through playing, you'll earn about 175-200 every match) or 15 ZEN (15 cents......REALLY) to rent it for a day. You can rent it for One or Seven days.
OR, you can pay around 7000-ish GP(around 35-45 games if you do average) or 450 Zen ($4.50) to get it PERMANENTLY.

THEN you get free 1-3 day rentals and also keychains for your guns whenever you level up. also you get a chance to unlock stuff for permanent sometimes.

This is F2P done right, IMO.

No, but I can take about 2 steps before it starts to stutter, HDD starts to grind like its loadging something, then it lets me play until it needs to load something in again. This only happens after I played a match.

I played closed beta and its been there from the beginning. Still the best f2p fps Ive played, next to Quake Live :p Back to BFBC2 I guess

I have tried running in borderless window as someone said that would work, and it helped a bit.

I might try this, as I have had textures on high with a 512MB card. But as I said, first match runs at 35-50 fps always...

So, maybe I'm new to F2P FPS, but the idea of renting unlocks seems very foreign to me. It feels like a waste of GP or whatever it's called, but then to actually permanently unlock stuff, it takes a huge amount of GP.

It's too bad the Starter Pack XP bonus isn't permanent like the Tribes pack, or I'd consider buying it and just write it off as a 10 dollar downloadable game. This time limited stuff just feels a bit off-putting to me.

I guess it makes sense to get people to constantly rent new weapons rather than settle on one weapon. And for players, it could work out insomuch as if they decide to nerf something, then if you're renting, it's not a big deal for you.
The devious part is, of course, renting a weapon incentivizes playing the game even more... because if you take a break, you're losing time on the weapon that you rented.

It's just this weird psychological barrier that I don't think I can overcome anytime soon unfortunately. I do find the game enjoyable in short bursts, but I'm not sure I'll be able to play enough to keep up with the Benjamins as it were.

Putting Textures to Medium might have fixed it. Game is at 900MB after 2 matches now. Seems like setting textures to High causes a leak in VRAM that then spills over to application RAM. Weird. But the game still looks great :D

Ill play a bit more with medium textures to see if its fixed.

Anyone with stuttering, try setting textures to medium

Did I get really luck with a drop from the start pack/tutorial completion pack or something, since I have a permanant MARS Robot Hero unlocked, and I haven't spent any money at all on the game yet.

Yup, that's probably my same experience. I feel like the game has you grind way too much for a single piece of armor, a scope, a muzzler, it's too fucking much, and I don't expect to play a FPS for 3 hours straight like I'd do a MMO.

i really don't mind the grind. 200 gp per match working towards a 5000+ gun, i am fine with that, people gotta put bread on the table i understand. but locking people out who don't spend real money on games is where i draw the line. i am not paying so i can revive other people neither am i gonna pay irl money for turrets. this is hardly FTP.

Tried this yesterday, it's a lot of fun. People seem to be focusing too much on the gear in this thread. I was doing fine with the default loadout, usually finishing 2nd or 3rd.

I do agree that the way it is setup now isn't great. Why can't every F2P game be like TF2? Instead of earning in game currency there should be random item drops/trading and have the option to use real money. Sure people might not get what they want but they'll feel like they're getting something tangible out of it instead of earning points and having no clue what to spend them on.

I haven't play it long enough to tell if the premium stuff is fair or not, but personally I don't enjoy grinding in FPSes unless the "satisfaction x effort" curve is really tight (like it was in CoD4, maybe), and in this case, it seems like it's a whole lot of effort for very little reward. I cant stand it in MMORPGs or even LoL, but here it seems like I just want another gun or piece of armor, it shouldn't be so difficult to get one.

Rent something you have your eye on for a day to try it out. But it with real money permanently if you feel like it's something you enjoy using. This way you're no longer feeling like you're working to enjoy the game.

Got DCed by the server with 1 minute left in the game after going 14-2 in TDM. How sad, haha.
