Actually hotels in Sweden are terribly overpriced. I have been to hotels that charge 1000 sek per night and in 2007 or 8 was equipped with a 13 inch crt tv... The worst thing is that there are so few hotels in general and they are all semi expensive and overpriced.

And 1000x the recommendations to Palmyra kebab. Soo awesome. New recommendation: Svenska Sushiköket för the best sushi, out at Midsommarkransen T-bana.

Go there. The largest gathering of beautiful large-breasted blondes you're likely to run into. |

Since I posted a smörgåstårta in the SweGaf thread I should mention them here as well. EviLore really need to go to a café and order a piece. As close as a national dish there are.
It is one of those things we swedes make or buy for (really) special occasions and not really an everyday food. |

I always figured Sweden is for summer houses in the country. And those are as affordable as anywhere really. And, cant you put up a tent virtually everywhere? Isn't that some kind of ancient law? You still have to go Meadows, it's awesome!
I remember I was in Bastad during the Swedish Open once and it was...just beautiful. |

I'm having second thoughts too... I intended to tour northern Europe next month and expected to spend a lot of money in Norway already, but it looks like Sweden will dig another hole in my budget.

You need to know about Jantelagen though! The Law of John T. :P You shall not think you are anything. You shall not thing that you are as good as us. You shall not think you are smarter than us. You shall not insinuate that you are better than us. You shall not think that you know more than us. You shall not think that you are good for anything. You shall not laugh at us. You shall not think that anyone cares about you. You shall not think that you can teach us anything. Not making this up. This is KIND OF part of the culture in the Scandinavian countries. |

Tho no one I know has it for special occasions, although I did have it at a funeral, which seems fitting. I'd say it's more of a regional thing than a national thing, much like kroppkakor is for Öland. I'd rather have köttbullar with lingonsylt |

J/K, smaken är som baken, and you might be right for it being regional though I'm from Östergötland but living in Järfälla and knows lots of people that consider them for special occasions. Anyway, it's something very swedish and if you are visiting a country I think those things are what you should experience. Not going to the nearest McDonald's :) |

Just book in advance, you can find some decent deals them. Alcohol and food is a bit more expensive, but it's not that crazy and defenitly won't leave a hole in your wallet if you just go for a weekend or something.

I'd say the opposite :p Isn't it just white bread slathered in mayo with some salmon and tomatoes/cucumber? |

It's not just mayo; there are many layers with different fillings. There is also whipped cream mixed with the mayo and the garnish is more about personal taste than something set in stone. And it's about letting the cake soak for a day before adding the garnish to make it moist. While the ingredients themselves aren't typically swedish the cake itself is (was invented by someone in Örebro I think back in the 60's). Try finding one abroad. :) Same with smågodis. You find candy everywhere but selling it as we do smågodis is typically swedish even though it has spread around a bit nowadays. |

In Uppsala? Party with students, they make up like 10% of the population and have ~13-14 pubs only they can enter (if they serve non-students they lose their alcohol license). If you're not a student or don't know any? Well... nothing. Have you spent any time researching places to go if you decide to go north to hike in the mountains?

There's a ton of hiking to do in Sweden but you might have to cover long distances to get where you want, so don't hesitate to rent a car.
Now, if you want really nice hikes (sometimes extremely nice even) without having to cover too much ground, you can fly to Madeira after Sweden. You can make a day long hike and fall back to Funchal everyday while never doing the same track for at least a weak, going from mountain pikes to Lush valleys or a through a chaotic volcanic rock sea-side. Renting a car to move freely is recommended too, but is also only an option, as most area are covered by busses. |

You need to go above the Arctic circle at least or I am disappoint!
Visit the Abisko National Park, that is a goal of mine at least. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abisko_National_Park It should be stunning this time of year.
