So what's worse: Mississippi or Alabama?
#1
I'm planing my roadtrip to the "north" when I'm in florida again in fall.
I want to visit the worst places in the deep south. I also want humidity+heat, swamp(s), cheap booze and maybe meet some down-to-earth folks |

Worst in what way? There are so many terrible places in both Alabama and Mississippi. Are you looking for the worst climate? Most economically depressed? Most racist? Highest rate of obesity? Lowest rate of literacy? If you're going north on I-65 I'd recommend Georgiana, Alabama as worst of the South.

You're a prick. I hope you won't be a condescending asshole when you're down there, and I hope you don't run into anyone in my family.
That being said, fuck Mississippi and fuck Alabama. Go to Southern Louisiana and eat great food in and around the swamps. Cities worth hitting up: Lafayette Lake Charles New Orleans Outside of Louisiana: Mobile's alright for a visit, as is Pensacola (in the Panhandle, close to mobile) if you're a big seafood/beach fan. The Naval Aviation Museum's there's great, too. Orange Beach (Alabama) is beautiful. Hit up Savannah if you make it to Georgia. |

I don't know, but my brother-in-law (black) went to school in Mississippi. Not sure which university, but while he was there a cop pulled him over a harassed him. He didn't give me the entire details, but apparently he filed a lawsuit and made more than enough to put himself through law school. He works for Merrill Lynch now, so I guess it was a good deal.

Alabama has its oases, but it was hilarious crossing over from Georgia and suddenly everything is falling apart.
Mississippi, on the other hand... I have heard horror stories from friends who have actually spent time. I have only passed through. |

You just missed the worst of Alabama's heat and humidity, for now at least, with heat indexes around 115. Swamps are all over. The worst thing you'll find, openly, in Alabama are Confederate flags. Outside of the big cities it'll mostly be the same rural stuff you'll find anywhere in many states. Long stretches of road with fields and old farm houses, town centers that are old and a bit run down. And plenty of little "towns" that are like my own, a couple caution lights with a local grocer and a couple gas stations. If you're looking for some lynching and KKK meetings you'll be disappointed. You're more likely to encounter trailer parks and trailer trash. I'm sure they could entertain you with some racist remarks, though, if that's what you're looking for. |

If you take I-85, all the way across the state (instead of ending in Montgomery), then everything south of that line is 100% shit (except for Mobile and the Ocean, because hey, Water). Above that highway, if you like driving in mountainy landscapes like the Smokey Mountains, there are areas like that. There are decent areas in Auburn, Tuscaloosa, and Birmingham. But Everything else, only a tad bit better than below the i-85 Line. I can't begin to think of a reason to enter Mississippi. I guess if you're on your way to NO or Memphis. |

Its the condescending attitude mainly although its fair to say that Alabama and Mississippi definitely have a high rate of 'moron' compared to a lot of other states. But there's shitty places everywhere. I dont know why somebody would go out of their way to experience them when you can likely find a trailer park in your hometown somewhere that'll give you the gist of the 'white trash' experience.

75? That's it? They can't even give us any diseases. I'd take the dogs anyday. Film it for all I care and put it online live stream. I'll be set for life with the revenue.

Mississippi.
The majority of it is a real shithole. However, Biloxi, MS is a neat place. ![]() ...and it has casinos! ![]() I'm also not fond of Arkansas. Most of the state, especially the eastern side by the Mississippi River, literally smells like shit. Texarkana (right at the border of Texas & Arkansas, if you couldn't figure that out by the clever name) is probably the worst US 'city' I've ever been to. Right up there with Paducha, KY. |
